***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

My raspberry make new plants every year and they renew plants from the roots. And after 2 years the old one dies off. I’m not sure if that how yours are. Not sure the weed fabric will allow new sprouts?
I agree. I made my berry patch 4 feet wide, and after a few years it's filled in and going beyond into the grass,
@catherineciviello2520 my double gold raspberries plant bought 3 from Starkbros back in 22, the 3 gal pot made 30 plants each in 2023, separated them out in fall of 23 had 90 plants now. Currently in ground on a 30' row I have to dig up the ones that go out of the 4' wide bed they multiply like crazy worse than wild blackberry. I just give them away to family.
I also agree.
I was just about to mention this...well done guys
I love you guys ,that said this is the only video in all you' ve done I personally find flawed. Berries are not grapes. You will be killing emerging shoots if you plant them as you did the grapes. Also $ 10.00 plant should always go in a $ 30.00 hole. In other words a hole at least half as bigger and deeper that the pot or root ball. I Know you know this so I'm not understanding your process here.
Well it's an opinion and observation , Good luck and I hope I'm wrong.
Lots of hard work...BUT DEFINITELY worth it...! Sweet beagle dogs too...! Praying Kevin's Dad is doing well...! God Bless...! 👍❤🦮✝👍
The problem with planting berry plants with a ground cover/weed fabric is the plants send new shoots up from their spreading roots. The fabric will prevent your plants from naturally reproducing. I use several layers of compost, mulch, and manure as my berry bed. Weeds pull up easily and regrowth is prolific. The new plants can thicken your berry patch or be transplanted to expand it elsewhere. I've even sold many of these new plants as starters.
Also, when planting your berry plants, the roots should be stretched in a direction that keeps the new shoots coming up where you want them. Bunching up these elongated roots when planting will inevitably kill your plants. This means that your initial planting holes will be oval in shape rather than round.
I put raspberries in last fall, and have already transplanted 4 runners, and there are still a couple that I'm just leaving near the mother plant. I love free plants!
And the original raspberry plants die after bearing fruit so without the new plants sprouting up, you will not have any berries the second year. They should be grown between two wires on each side. They don’t need to be trellised or tied up, just something to lean on.
Where is your drill auger?
@@pamelaallen7296 that was my thought also
@@pamelaallen7296. There ground is very rocky so the auger blades might chip and break
Good morning thank you for the lovely video, Kevin I'm sending healing prayers 🙏 for your dad take care and God bless
Love the cows out there watching what you’re doing.
Nothing like putting down ground cover in the wind! 🤣We're planting strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, and just put in 14 fruit trees. I order from Schlabach's Nursery, an Amish nursery that has been in business for generations and just happens to be about 20 miles from me. I use a drill and auger for my planting holes. Great idea putting down extra fabric around the plants for weed control, Thatks!, going to do that here. Looks like a good day for planting, wishing you a bountiful harvest.
Watching your videos Saturday morning gives me inspiration to get off my lazy butt and get out in my garden. Thanks!
Look at that smile! Hard work for sure, but we'll worth seeing her big smile!
Yeah the weed fabric will prevent new canes from coming up. They send out runners. We started our patch many years ago and have a large prolific patch. No trellis needed . The canes support each other.
At 24:51 Sarah explains exactly how they are dealing with this.
That looks amazing! I'm glad you got your raspberries and blackberries in.
It's nice to see your dogs running around. My old boy is spending more and more time snoozing in the house. He's 14 and that's about 87 in dog years!
Continued prayers for Tom. 🙏 Did he get to go home yet?
Sarah, you and Kevin are an excellent example of what marriage and teamwork, making any project, large or small work wonderfully!
Awesome you two definitely work hard and I sure hope you are blessed for all your hard work keep up the great Content ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow that looks amazing and love seeing your pups. They are enjoying themselves 😊❤.
Instead of burning a hole, I would burn an X. This way the fabric could lay down to block weeds, but still be flexible for new berry stems to rise. Great video.👍
Must have been pre-recorded, I notice the trees are still bare and no noisy cicadas. In hindsight sight, I think on last weeks show they said that they had a lot of family stuff on this week.
OOOHHHHhh... I LOVE that extra piece of fabric around the stem tucked under the hole! That is SO CLEVER!! I always learn so much from y'all for years now! Thank you for sharing!!
Congratulations on planting more berries!!
I often find myself praying for Tom and all of you 🙏🙏🙏 Plz keep us updated if possible
Love you!!
Have a blessed day
The cane plants replace the cane after 2 years, and they spread through their roots, if you have the weed fabric they will not be able to replace the canes or expand. a better option would have been either a thick layer of mulch or to cut through in strips instead of holes i would think, like burn a 1 foot long hole spaced a foot or so apart. also the canes do not get bushy.
Agree with this. The other thing I would add is that raspberries are super evasive. I planted 3 canes last year (also got them from Stark Brothers) and this year I have what seems like a bizzilion of them. My plan is to transplant them in the fall to a place on the farm that can handle the over growth of them.
Yes this is what I’m thinking too. Also different varieties may require different pruning. Some of these are everbearing so you might just mow it down each year.
do you have a picture to explain. I'm new to planting an orchard & not sure what your saying here. So, you shouldn't put weed fabric down, when you plant berries?
The 2 of you work so well together. Your orchard is going to be amazing.
I started trellising my blackberries 20 years ago, makes picking so much easier.
Hello, hope everyone is doing well. This is going to be a fantastic berry patch! Wow! Have a wonderful day!
My raspberries and blackberries send sooo many new shoots each year and the 2 years old die. I do not understand how it will happen under the fabric?
Maybe only narrow fabric? Or planting in between to strips of fabric with possibility to open them for a new growth?
Want to add to my comment below: berries prefer acidic soil. If you have not done a soil test, rather than add manure-based compost which might be more alkaline, I would water once a week with a diluted fish fertilizer, and maybe sprinkle a tiny bit of powdered sulfur around plants about 1 foot out. For your viewers, I recommend doing a soil test prior to planting berries, and if your soil is alkaline, dig in some sulfur (no more than 1/4 cup) out about a foot from the plant. I realize you are using weed fabric to lessen your labor, but for your viewers, it would be worthwhile to kill the grass in the area you wish to plant in over the previous winter by laying down cardboard and dumping some free wood chips from your local arborist on top. Not only will that kill the grass over the winter, but it will help create the acidic soil condition berries love. I use free cardboard and free woodchips around all my berry plants to keep weeds down rather than spending big bucks on weed fabric, which eventually will deteriorate into plastic shreds and prevents you from fertilizing properly. Also, berry plants need a gallon of water a day in hot weather, so you may want to run a soaker hose on a timer.
Yep, this year you should prep your beds for blueberry planting next year. Elemental Sulfer and peat moss mixed in. Unless of course you have an acid soil.
Thanks for all this info I just planted 2 yesterday and I was not aware that they need a special soil. I think I will add a little sulfur
Smart. Beautiful. Handsome couple
Seeing the herd of cattle in the background, I'm surprised they weren't at the fence watching you plant the plants. Didn't you at one time have two big
dogs and a puppy for one of your girls?
There are drill bit augers that you attach to your cordless drill. Good for doing holes like you did today without the need for a hand shovel. Aimed at those watching as you Kevin and Sarah have already made their holes. Eager to see how your raspberries grow. So sweet to see the dogs enjoying the outdoors. 🌸🐨🌸
They do have the angers that they have used before
Yes, the augers are amazing. The Laura edition is on sale this week. See Garden Answer...Laura and Aaron.
He has one
The can't use the auger as there are too many rocks in the area they are planting
@@glassiegirl That's exactly what they are made for, better than a shovel.
¡Good morning! Thanks for inviting us into your homestead every Saturday.
I'm getting ready to attend a baptism of a lovely lady who today welcomes the love of God into her life.
That is wonderful!!!
U
I was annoyed by my neighbor who planted ONE raspberry in the corner of her yard where the raspberry ignored her crappy soil & sent its runners over the property line into my garden where I'd built up the soil for 10 years. >:( I pulled them out every year until the other neighbor's dumb tree shaded that corner! >:( I gave up & moved my garden to the middle of the yard. Meanwhile, a lush raspberry patch grew in the shady corner, they are FANTASTIC!! HA!!
Our red raspberries fruit on new canes every year. Not sure how that will work with the weed barrier.
I think Sarah explains at 25 minutes. Cuts slit in fabric at plant base, will open & widen later to allow shoots.
also, depends on the type of raspberry. I have black raspberries that fruit on "last year's" wood and then dies. Every spring, I prune out dead canes (down to the ground) and new ones have grown the previous summer that will fruit again.
That's exactly what we did...get the garden and orchard in before we finished unpacking. This spring (our third spring here) is "berry bushes" and we now have blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries planted.
A update on the orchid please? You getting fruit yet?
Loved seeing your dogs. I'm sure they're a lot happier & will be healthier, too with the exercise they'll get. I noticed one of your cows watching the goings on. 😊
🙏 Kevin's dad is still recovering well.
It’s always mind blowing seeing people plant black berries. Here in Oregon there so invasive and there a major pain dealing with them every year on the property.
I will love seeing your Beagles! Weve had 3 Beagle Boys ourselves & we have a Grandbeagle Boy. He is 17 ! We only have one of our Beagle Boys left here & he is 8. We adopt adult homeless Beagles. We also have a fenced-in yard. You have to with Beagles - they WILL run off!
This video brought to you by Start Brothers... Thx!
I love ❤that cow in your thumbnail overseeing your project like a little manager! He’s truly “out-standing in his field “!!
When I'm doing something like that I don't use a measuring tape. Just a piece of scrap wood the length of the required spacing with a handle attached.
You did an amazing job. It's great to see your homestead grow.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ prayers continue for your dad 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏♥️
It's always fun to play in dirt. Having fun
Love seeing the dogs in the video.
❤That was a BERRY GOOD DAY, Kevin & Sarah!! 😊 God Bless ALL Your Hard Work!! Have a Wonderful weekend!!
I planted 2 thornless blackberries bushes today. They were called Apache blackberries. I hope they do well. We noticed most of the thornless blackberries are named after Native American tribes. Wishing y’all the best with yours too. I also planted 10 blueberry bushes last year and they are all doing great. All of them have blueberries on them. I can barely wait to taste them.
Good Morning
How lovely for me to have a cup of tea , whilst watching you both plant berries.
Fantastic job. Everything is so neat, tidy, and straight. Good job. Dogs are so cute
Awesome berry good day !!! Great job setting up your berry row. That will be a big help to a lot of people all over trying to grow berries that will be easy to pick. Thanks so much for taking the time to share with everyone. Fred.
Nice work. You'll be making some nice raspberry goodies in the not too distant future. My neighbor put in blackberries but not nearly as carefully as the way you did it. They can take over if not carefully maintained as you pointed out.
Congratulations on all those beautiful berries I'm sure you're anxious to have a productive crop. Thank you for sharing. God's blessings to you
Your hat reminded me of the flying Nun (Sally Field). I sure love watching your videos. You are like family to me. Thank you for all you do!
I think you are going to regret landscape fabric with your berries. Raspberry roots spread out and the new canes could come up any where in the area you put down the landscape fabric. My neighbor learned this lesson the hard way
Thanks for introducing Starks Bros. I ordered 6 fruit trees and some bare root strawberries from them and all are doing fantastic here in north GA! You all have inspired me to start a "mini-orchard"! Bless my husband, he's been working hard to get the fencing up so the deer and ground hogs can't get to the trees.
Great accomplishments you two, I know you’ll keep us informed on how things are growing ❤. Praying for your loved ones as the days go by 🥰❤️🙏
Cant wait to see this area filled out. Im sure it will be beautiful 😍!
This is going to be awesome , can’t wait to check on you to see what is happening. How could you be more perfect with putting this all together, God bless
All of your videos are so helpful. I'm glad that you showed up first on my search for meat rabbits years ago.
Peace and blessings.
I was thinking of doing the weed fabric for my raspberries also. My concern was that if I made the hole to big yes weeds and grass would grow. But, if I made the hole to small the off shoots wouldn't grow. I can't wait to see how this works for you
I wouldn’t, they spread through roots, not just the crown.
Im glad you came up with a system to stop weeds from coming up (or at least curtail them).
Berry Good Day!
Good morning from Missouri! You guys are truly an inspiration.
Hope you're on vacation. Have missed you both this past week. Hope no tornados. And hope family is alright.
My raspberries send up new canes further out than those holes would accommodate. You'll have them pushing up under the weed fabric. I'm interested in seeing how this works out, though, because if the fabric suppresses the suckers I might try it myself.
Sarah, can we get a few wedding pictures of you guys? Missing you in AZ! God bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister ☦️ 🙏🏻
I certainly hope you two are safe and well as the severe storms ravaged your state.
That was a long day, but well worth it. Looks great!!!!
💕 I'm so happy you got your berries in👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Good morning everyone! It’s been awhile since I have watched you guys the homestead looks beautiful! God Bless
Kevin, hope your Dad is feeling better. Prayers!
Pretty sure that ground cover is going to inhibit your berry plants from reproducing. They spread themselves. My family planted ours when I was 4. Im 55, and have never had to plant them again, since. Oh, and I live in the far north.
Just a suggestion, after the grass dies underneath the cloth, cut out the row about 6 inches on both sides of raspberries to allow the next years shoots to come up. Hope that made sense.
Stay safe and God bless you my friends. 🌱🐄🐖🐐🐓🌱 Lisa
At 24:51 Sarah explains exactly how they are dealing with this.
The only reason I can think of for the weed block is that the grass was not previously killed. I killed my grass by laying black plastic down the fall before the spring. Makes the planting much easier. Then I mulched whatever I had, cut grass, pine needles, and shredded branches.
Great video! It looks like this year is your best year ever! Can't wait to see it all 3 years from now! Your orchard is going to be amazing! Happy Gardening! Take care!😀
Loved seeing the little doggie. We miss seeing the animals
How exciting! Your fruit area is growing nicely. Can't wait to see you plamt your blueberries next year.
Yay! So happy to see your Beagles! We also have 2 Beagles on our 80 acre property. We use the Halo collars and can program their parameters right from our phones and you can change their parameters whenever you need to. Works great for us! Great job today!
Thank you! I want to do the same thing..we sold everything moved to bigger acreage and debt free.. Planning on doing the same thing as you..highland cows..we have chickens..etc..
Your berries are lined up east to west, which means the leaves on the north are always somewhat shaded. Why not line up the berries north to south so all the leaves have a chance to get some direct sun some of the time?
So much work! The results will be delicious!
We use a long handled bulb planter for making holes for planting our raspberries. Our is from Kent&Stowe, but there are several other producers. It was so efficient, both to make the holes, and to plop the plants into the hole. Our plants came in smaller pots, though.
Good ☕️☕️ Morning Kevin & Sarah, that will be an awesome berry patch.I love raspberries.Your hard work really shows on your homestead.❤
Can you guys please give us a orchard update vid? Even frost or bugs or anything else is still good information.
Good evening! My blackberries have berries on them ❤️❤️ first year for berries. God bless yall!
I’m waiting for my new 3 raspberry plants now.
Supposed to be here on Monday!
I’m excited for you guys, as much I am for myself.
Congratulations on your wonderful new berry Patch!!
Amazing amount of work. Can’t wait till I see you picking and cooking with all the berries. 😊
Just wanted to pop in and say we are all praying for your family.❤️
I have 3 yo Ouachita blackberries in Florida. They are very sweet too. You will love them.
I had a patch of raspberries and a patch of blackberries the next year berries came on and now I had crossed berries
I live in SC. I bought all of my orchard plants from Starke Brothers & they are doing very well.
10 hours ! The price we pay to have fun and make precious memories.
Love y'alls videos and what your doing there.
God bless y'all and stay safe out there on the homestead.
I feel your joy! I've lived on my property for 23 years and always had plans for orchard, and several berry patches. Finally, this year it happened. I was able to get 18 trees to finish off my 23 tree orchard, 16 elderberry, 15 raspberry, 5 prime ark freedom blackberries, and we have been blessed with loaded Muscadine vines and 12 mulberry trees discovered this year. I planted the last 5 blackberries last night. I'm actually finished. Everything else will be propagated from existing plants. It's been a huge goal for decades and .... I am done. 🎉❤
Congratulations! 🥳 What an accomplishment!
I am planting grapes this year, we have raspberry’s and blackberries so grapes will be wonderful
Good vid¡ Im sure yall have done WAY TOO MUCH PLANNING! Im sure you guys will figure out the rest. Thanks for bringing us along
Wow! One step at a time! Blessings on your growing season Kiddos! 🌻🐛🌿💚
I love it, can't wait to get my new property and do exactly the same thing. And yes Kevin, there will be many more times blueberries on my farm than any other. YUMMO!
You’d be better off planting your raspberries in raised beds without weed fabric. Use four t-posts, one in each corner. Run wires the lengthwise from the posts one about three feet above ground and second one about five or six feet. This will provide all the support they need. They do not need a trellis that would require you to constantly be tying them up. Then you’ll have to untie everything to remove the canes when they die. The canes die after fruiting. New canes come up every year to replace them. I’ve been growing raspberries in the same raised bed for many, many years. Weeds are not a problem because nothing can compete with raspberries.
Love your suggestion!
We used free wood chips around ours for 2 years to help ours grow without weeds. It breaks down over time and helps new shoots come through. We just weed eat occasionally between plants to get rid of anything we don’t want growing where we mow. I like your idea of using the weed fabric as well. You could just enlarge the holes by burning a larger hole for the shoots as the plant grows.
Jason, from Cog Hill Farm has a Great video of tresseiling his berries. He copied Peatals from the past. 2 or 3 years old now and beautifully under control.
Have you seen how Jason from Cog Hill Farm trains his berries and fruit trees? It looks like an amazing system he uses. I wish you great success with your beautiful orchard!
You should try the Prime Ark Freedom and Ouachita thornless blackberries. The prime ark plants bear the first year and they are a variety that double crops. They are a little different than the regular thornless berries because the canes will bear for two seasons instead of bearing and then dying off. The berries are huge and much sweeter than some that are more acidic.
I grow them in Kentucky and they have thrived even in this clay soil. Prime Ark berries bear fruit at the tips of the canes so never prune them until both seasons are over.
Thank you for the info👌
Our blackberries are in a wild patch and it's magical. (Thornless) I know our Amish friends do it more like you're doing and they have lots of berries too. More than one way and that's great!
Picking time here's a trick we have found helpful.
Get a gallon bucket (I had kept old cream tubs) with a handle, either use a belt or tie rope around ur waist. Now u have both hands free to pick. U can have another container to dump into. We would pick with friends & family every year, then go to pump & rinse berries & divide into how many women were there (families).
Other fruits I usually took the kids & divided with ppl who help put things up
Corn, an older church couple would plant 5 acres. Then whoever came to pick, wash, blanch & bag would split corn up with the older couple getting a full share
Lol. I wondered if u still had Rosie & the other guy. Beagles r hounds & o my do they love to hunt... I had Bloodhound in the house for same reason with my little Fru-Fru dogs.
