Harpers ferry is actually a very important town in American history. Northerner John Brown led a revolt there in 1859 against slavery, hoping the slaves would join him, although this didn't happen and he was sentenced to death. This left a bad impression of Northerners on Southerners and was actually a big cause of the civil war.

Rainbolt, do you remember what haunted hotel you went to?
I had friends who were married at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs on New Year's Eve as a destination wedding. The day before, we went on the haunted tour where people tried "ghost detectors" that were good at detecting where wires for electricity were. Its basement used to be a morgue, which aligns with your story.
The Crescent Hotel did have a creepy history...much of it involving it being a nationally known quack medicine facility. Many died. There were multiple other stories outside of that era of its history.
