I am using Steve’s system for few years now, and love it. You have to be sure that when you apply the coating, you take the excess off. You said the top of the brush should not be touching the piece, but what is more important is that the bottom is not touching the piece, so the extra varnish can drip off. That is why you need to put cardboard on the rails to protect your lathe.
Hi Sam , I flew into Billings to visit my daughter, and Was thinking of stopping by to say HI and look at your shop for a few minutes. I will be flying out Wednesday afternoon. But will be back this fall for a couple days too, let’s visit sometime. THANKS Ed
I am just seeing this post. We have been in California for four or five days and won’t return until this weekend. So I think I will miss you completely would have enjoyed having you visit the shop. Contact me in the fall if you come back and you might think about coming to our Symposium here in Billings, which is The first week in October. Thanks, Sam.
I apply this finish on a shop-built "slow turner" that runs at 15rpm. I let it turn for 2 to 4 hours to prevent pooling, runs, etc. As an experiment, the last piece I did using urethane finish, I applied a coat of sanding sealer, and gave it a light sanding before applying the first coat of finish ... I am really happy with the results. I believe Steve no longer decants the finish into glass jars. Instead, I believe he said he was storing it in Stop-Loss bags.
Sam... Nice pieces. I'm wondering if waving a low setting heat gun over it would it caise the finish to smooth out and rease any bubbles and any other imperfections?
Sam, I turn bird houses on my lathe. I use the urethane gloss on them. I use a natural bristle artist fan style brush to apply my finish. I also thin mine a little, seems to apply better for me. I discovered the Minwax Helmsman spar urethane looking for a finish I could use that was probably going outside. It works great. I love the square plate.
I have a can of Spar Urethane that I use on exterior pieces (signs) and I was very pleased with the results. I will try this on a turned piece. This stuff dries quickly.
Sam, I have used it for flat work mainly for being water resistant. Don’t have the luxury of a paint room so drying time is an issue for me. About to try solvent free 2 minute curing uv activated coating. Any experience using them? Stay safe.
Nice piece. Although these pieces will probably never see any outside weather the following may be moot. Minwax spar is not a very good product as far as durability goes. Far better are the the Total Boat marine products. Extremely durable and also produce a superior finish...Just saying
I am just experimenting with this product. Steve Sinner has used it for many years and I would rely on his experience. I usually spray lacquer which I will continue to do but this is a very nice option and if you love shiny, this is a way to go. I did try to buff out That low plate and it worked pretty well so more experimenting as I go forward thanks for the comment Sam
Looks like a very nice high gloss finish. Thank you for that thorough tutorial.
Very nice Sam. That finish looks really great. Thank you for sharing. See you on the next one
Very well done Sam. The results are excellent. Thank you for sharing.🙂🙂
Looks good. I have done the same thing with rub on ploy. Thanks Tim

That's a really shiny finish. ✨️ It takes a long time.

Yes, I need to try thinning mine and see how that works
Thank you for the very informative video Sam. Blessings and hope for amazing and peaceful new year to all. PS "The last cost"?

Try Waterlox gloss sometime. I use it on mills exclusively now as lacquer does not stand up with handling and "stuff" on your hands.
