People in the West are sick and tired of these pricks messages. The West ended slavery - including that in African countries and African empires, such as in Benin or the Zulu empires. The same goes for the Trans-saharan slave trade routes by lovely Muslims.

Not only in the West, but all around the world. I would argue our ethics are grounded in our "religion". If you truly believe in the "survival of the strongest", your ethics will guide you to always fight . Meanwhile, if you truly believe life is holy, you will be guided to protect all kind of life. We dont know the purpose of human life or how life came about, but we know what story to tell in order to make life better for everybody: The story of holyness, cooperation, respect and care. Today we are told the story of greed (being rich and famous is the purpose), arrogance (some humans are the superior (not God), and rights (I have the right to kill you).

This is such a brilliant discussion by this brilliant son of Africa. As a white South African grown up in apartheid South Africa, I can understand these arguments completely. The colonial subversion of the mind by narrative smear is so prevalent here in Europe today, in the UK, in Germany , France the EU. I learned to recognise the false narrative only properly after having left South Africa. I see it now everywhere for what it is.

I am so happy to see this discussion brought into the mainstream and into the international sphere for global peace, neutrality and justice. The trope of Africa is poor and riven by violence because of corruption is the flipside to the story that was told about the people resisting colonial settlers and Imperial domination in West Asia what the west calls the Middle East - that they are terrorists.
The big difference is that in Asia they have never accepted those terms - that they are terrorists for resisting imperial violence, but in Africa even Africans have been so heavily propagandised from school textbooks to literature, media and mainstream corporate news that they DO believe in the trope of corruption as the cause of all of Africa’s problems.

The same goes for half of the African countries, where their leaders take the wealth of their nations leaving Africans in abject poverty.
Sadly, professor Hater forgets to mention this oppression. You see, African people know much better what's oppressing them - and it's not the long-gone wester empires. It's their new emperors... of their same collor.

Speaking as a Slovenian, from a country which was a part of former Yugoslavia, we have historically had excellent relations with African countries, not least as founding members of the Non Aligned Movement, our (cooperative worker self-managed) companies built factories there, helped them in their efforts for national liberation, many African students came to study over here. This is why the trope of "white man" commiting atrocities against the black peoples offends me. This righteous anger and resentment must be directed at western nations that are to blame, and not all white peoples, especially Slavs, who were throughout history oppressed and genocided by mostly the same western nations. So much so that in the USA, Slavs are, according to the "Communities of Color" website, classified as persons of color!

Brilliant talk, thank both of you! I have a remark about comfort and convenience in Europeans’ lives, though. My mother was 15 years old at the end of WWII in Berlin. She crawled out from the basement she had spent most of her adolescent life in, to be confronted by a world in rubble, ashes and rotting body parts. She and other women cleared the rubble and reconstructed a semblance of Berlin on as little as 870 calories per day. A world that looked like ground zero, where men were basically absent. This instilled her the ineffable will to be on the winning side, no matter what, and made her a desperate follower of everything USA. I think fascist narrative is stronger and more pervasive than we would like to believe.

Please have him back because I really need to educate myself more about Africa.

People like Badenoch are not ignorant of past and current atrocities of colonialism and imperialism, they just don't care enough about their own people's suffering. They are too enamoured of their own personal aggrandisement and comprador class benefits that they don't think twice about selling their extended family to the slavers for a taste of the colonial loot.

Again, a wonderful guest and topic, Pascal. What people call "colonialism" and "imperialism" are the most powerful planetary forces in modern history. Yet, we discuss them using the narratives, terms and conditions of colonisers. At least, the Palestinians called it "Al-Nakba". My point is that we, in Africa are just beginning to get to the point of actually wrapping our heads around this sustained intergenerational brutality that is still going on now. Susan Williams' book "White Malice" is just one small part of a constellation. The African Berlin Conference state, for example, was and still is, a Western intelligence operation. From political "parties" to trade unions and the "Congress of Cultural Freedom", intellectuals, elites, musicians, even Marxists, African is a colonial jamboree. But, we still use a misdirecting colonial term of engagement to understand this experience, the Latin root word, colonus and imperium. It reminds me of those Japanese intellectuals that met in a conference in Kyoto in July 1942, to "overcome the modern thing". Modernity itself is colonial so, it is not just Africans or indigenous peoples, it is everyone on the planet, including Europeans like the Sámi people.

Thank you both for a great discussion. I hope you can do more, and explore more of African history, ongoing colonialism, and other current issues, as well as continue the discussion of countering entrenched colonial narratives.
The problem of "dumb" biased narratives is overwhelming. Any effort against it is like a pebble thrown at the ocean to hold back the tide. I'm reminded of Vonnegut's pessimistic view that all his stories only had an effect like dropping a cream pie on a sidewalk from above, making some people pause briefly before walking round the mess. I think, as Prof. Aghogho said near the end, people's reasoning is greatly influenced by lifestyles that incline them to choose convenience and comfortable, profitable conformity.
Western popular culture in many ways teaches us bad moral reasoning and prejudiced stereotypes, which political authorities then apply regularly to wars and other issues (e.g., climate change) to serve capitalist interests. But the entire system of capitalist "democracy" is also a lie disguising plutocratic oligarchies.
Though I think good stories are vital to counter biased narratives, I've seen in teaching literature how hard it can be for people to read critically and to overcome their cultural prejudices--even when seeing different perspectives and evidence in stories. People often interpret stories through the lens of their prejudices. Also, even when stories have good meanings and become popular, they are then regularly simplified and distorted when adapted into films.
It gives hope that increasing numbers of people distrust legacy media, and that enough were disgusted with Democrats to ensure their election defeat--despite having huge media and pop culture support, and the most funding from the rich. But it's still horrifying that the election was close at all: that people could possibly support a party funding an imperialist proxy war in Ukraine and, worst of all, a blatant genocide in Gaza, in both cases demonizing others in typical language of colonial propaganda.
I think western culture and politics won't be able to change enough until they've experienced more widespread disasters (economic, environmental, &/or military), driving people to force changes on their government systems and rethink their relations with other nations--hopefully, to be more cooperative rather than competitive.

Yes Dr Akpome, great take on democracy. That is the reason why democracy is sold to us in Africa as an instrument of imperialism in a pseudo-independence paradigm, because it is the easiest means of state capture by which the most depraved amongst us always manage to get to be at the helm of affairs, anyhow.
The solution in Africa must pass not by expecting the next elected president to be somehow a leopard able to change their spots because that isn't going to happen, but to fundamentally restructure our governance structures, to the hue of what worked so well in our past.

It’s a total misleading that European so-claimed themselves are more civilized than the non-west because European first invented steam power and electricity which represents a step of industrialization ahead of non-west. Hello, Pascal from Neutrality Studies! Firstly, thank you for your diligent work - listening to your videos has become a somewhat theraputic practice for me in recent times, and you've introduced me to more names I'm glad to see in my siggestions feed. Rationality is a breath of fresh air in the rather stuffy media space of our days.
Secondly, I usually refrain from commenting on matters well beyond my qualification, but, since, this time, you and your guest have specifically touched on the kind of personalities that come to power, I can't help but suggest something for your consideration. Would you entertain the idea of inviting a psychotherapist for an interview, to discuss the troubling particulars of modern day elites' psyche? No name-calling or finger-pointing required, of course - just the discussion of those self-propagating tendencies and their basis.
Personally, I could propose Dr. Ramani Durvasula - a well-known name with wealth of experience. She specializes in pathological narcissism (which has garnered a buzzword status over the years, sadly), but would have plenty to say about sociopathy and psychopathy as well, and is not shy about bringing her expertise into the political frame. Also, I would say, she shines best during interviews, when people have prepared complex and varied questions for her.
I often hear you asking bewildered rhethorical questions along the lines of "What were they thinking?" or "How can't they see it's completely irrational?", and I'm fairly certain that, while learning how a narcissistic mind works, you'll feel like a corkboard conspiracy theorist stereotype, snapping your fingers and whispering "It all makes sense now!" under your breath every so often. Just to touch the surface, narcissistic people are prone to manipulation, lying (self-interested or compulsive), entitlement, sense of own superiority, smear-campaigning, distrustfulness bordering on paranoia, envy, dehumanization of others, which enables them to climb high and fast, but, at the same time, they can be gullible, impulsive, short-sighted - possessing all the qualities of a good puppet. I'm sure, even after this superficial description, you already have bells ringing in your head.
This doesn't sound like something in your usual ballpark, but it could be an interesting discussion nonetheless. Thank you again, and all the best with your endeavors!

      @ralphbernhard1757 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Excellent comment.
Most human beings living in symbiosis of systems either don't have the skill to recognize bad actors, nor the inclination to remove them since it is tangentially beneficial to own favored systems, or have become directly entrapped by the "gain models" (pyramids) lead by such bad actors. An example of this would be the case of Oliver North, whose psychopathic dealings were rewarded by "the system" with a highly paid management position (NRA). It doesn't seem to bother sufficient decent people enough to make such "management styles" impossible (effect a "stopper" against such models de jure or de facto). Indeed, based on observation, and looking back in history it can therefore be concluded that such behaviour is only given a "slap on the wrist", and therefore continues in "good empires". Studies have shown that models based on "intent of gain", like capitalism, have rates of people with psychopathic tendencies as high as 20%. Compare that reality to the average for a normal society, or usual non-gain models of cooperation, which is around a "1% psycho saturation rate". There is no reason to believe other models of "intent of gain" (like politics) do not have similar high rates of psychos.
All empires as collectives of individuals have by nature, psychopathic and bullying tendencies. Note that the "Hollywood image" of the "psycho" and "the bully" is far removed from reality. The unfortunate reality is that most psychopaths/bullies remain undetected, and undetectable, because they manipulate entire groups of "non-psychos/non-bullies" into following them as beneficiaries, who then start entire campaigns of coverups and deception themselves.
These psychopathic traits are generally considered to be common traits, and are defined: stated where these individual traits overlap with governments:
      - have split personalities (the political reality of "doves" and "hawks" coexisting in one "brain")
      - they are narcissistic (constantly pointing the finger "outwards" in attempts at deflecting from own actions and goals)
      - they have "brains" (governments) which control, or misconstruct data
      - scheme for own gain (policies, doctrines, and the likes of that)
      - use manipulative strategies as tools in order to mislead billions of people
These bad actors and deceivers are allowed "to play", to lie and deceive, telling their inhabitants things like "all we want is peace", whereas in reality there are elements pushing for eternal war which benefits the systems they represent.
      Footnotes/key words for further research:
*** 21 percent of CEOs are psychopaths
      *** Lobaczewski's definition of pathocracy
*** The dark triad of malevolent personality traits: psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism

A great interview. Great questions and answers. At the end it got philosophical, which I find wonderful. I tend to side with Pascal in terms of his view on human nature, but I agree with Aghogho that its manifestation necessarily depends on the institutional context. I'm ready for more of this.
