Khanyisa's morning with the Jabulani HERD

  • Khanyisa is getting so much attention from the Jabulani herd, especially the females!
She enjoyed a morning in the land surrounding the stables with the whole herd once again, and some of the younger elephants were a bit more settled. Still, there is a massive curiosity between them about this new and exciting addition to the herd.
The males (including Mambo, Lundi's son) tend to keep to themselves and are not showing much interest, except for Jabulani, Sebakwe and Fishan (the older males).
Tokwe (the Matriarch) and Limpopo spent a lot more time with Khanyisa. Limpopo, in particular, has become extremely taken with Khanyisa, wanting to be by her side at every possible minute, it is adorable, but sometimes a bit overwhelming for little Khanyisa, who often tends to try move away, searching for Lundi.
Limpopo tried to get Khanyisa to latch on to her teat but is not experienced with doing it, as she has not had her own (much like Klaserie), and she gets frustrated when it does not happen. At one stage she unintentionally squeezed Khanyisa's trunk just a little too hard, and Khanyisa went first to the carers and then to Lundi for reassurance.
Sadly, it seems that Bubi takes a step back when Tokwe and Limpopo are with Khanyisa but always keeps a very close eye on Khanyisa. However, both her and Klaserie assume their allomother responsibilities when alone with her again.
This was evident when we went for a walk. We did not take the entire herd, just the original eight elephants that Khanyisa first met, namely, Jabulani, Lundi, Bubi, Klaserie, Setombe, Somopane, Zindoga and Sebakwe. Bubi and Klaserie were back in action, alongside Lundi, providing love and care for Khanyisa.
We hope that Limpopo and Tokwe will settle a bit in time, and allow Bubi and Klaserie to help with Khanyisa too.
It is interesting to see the dynamics of the herd unfold from day-to-day.
The younger elephants are a little rougher in their touch and show signs of jealousy on occasion, which is to be expected, just like children when there is a new addition to the family. It takes time to settle.
    Little Khanyisa felt very loved.www.herd.org.za

Isn't it magical the way they all stop and surround her when she's nursing to give her time and keep her safe. So much of their gentle behaviour reminds me of the Orca I've spent time around. They all adore the babies, live within a strong matriarchal society, will Aunt and foster the babies as required, and look at you with such wisdom. This is beautiful♥️💜

Gentle giants loving the baby. I love how they sometimes stop while walking as if they felt something in the ground and wanted to protect her. Khanyisa is exactly where she needs to be.

I noticed Limpopo squeeze her trunk but did not understand what it was for. I held my breath for a moment seeing that. Limpopo made me a little nervous in this video but, I would probably respond the same way around the cutest baby Ellie in the world 💕 Thank you for explaining the individual reactions to Khanyisa.

What an hilarious beginning! The first 8 minutes tiny Khanyisa leading them around in circles...even little Timisa butting up to the little one , like the giant grownups! Oh this made me laugh. They’re all completely besotted by this little pink baby. As are we all. What a great very early morning chuckle, watching these enormous characters swirl around, protecting the baby but never arguing with each other.....so light on their feet! Im still laughing, watching everybody try to get organized & on their way. 🤣😂💗💕👏🏼

These are beautiful interactions with the herd. I don’t understand why you are always calling to them like they are dogs though. It would be more beautiful and amazing to watch them interact without them always being directed around. Just a thought. I just turn the audio off when I’m watching, but doing that makes you miss all their little language noises they make. They really are exceptional creatures.

The herd only there bcuz it orovides safety and a lot is provided by the humans, life is easier for them at rhe moment...if they wajted to they couled take over, get mean and run everyone iutta there, smart how they "pretend" to listen, and give the humans what they wanna see and hear..they do their own thing thing tho. Besides the food and medical assistance they would be better off without the humans and trainers and orphanage too,it traumatized then more than they showed up😅

They have a lot of elephant time :-) They settle down in certain areas for the day and the elephants do their thing. At night in their land and around the stables they are on their own too. We show some of the highlights when Adine is present with her phone to capture some key moments :-)

So much loving affection. Khanyisa is the Little Pink Princess of her HERD. Nice juicy grapefruit as appreciation for Lundi mothering Khanyisa home to her nursery.
