The Tendency System in Demon's Souls is annoying, putting it lightly, and insufferable, being sincere. It is overly complex and so rooted in the game, that almost everything you do is linked to it in some form or other. Nevertheless, we have to play by these rules so it is a good idea to know. This is a full guide on every single aspect of the Tendency System. World Tendency, Character Tendency, the theory, the practice, the manipulation... Holy crap, this has got to be the best guide to world tendency out there. Thank you so much! I think the biggest thing that would fix the world tendency to make it much better AND easier would be if you could raise world tendency by helping others in boss fights. It would dramatically fix issues of being locked off of content and it doesn't make sense why it isn't this way already tbh

Made me feel so much better when he said that The Valley of Defilement sucked. Just finished that world and I hated it. That poison water was beyond annoying.
World 5 is ruthless. The area itself is harder than its bosses. And it hides some awesome items and weapons, so learning it is still a good idea. I am happy you got through it! Thank you for your comment!
Good video, very informative. However, in the interest of clarity and to avoid confusion I will add some corrections/points.
1. In the section about Colorless Demon Souls you say that they can be used to upgrade boss weapons. This is incorrect, boss weapons are not upgradeable.
2. How you kill things matters for character tendency, but doesn’t matter for world tendency. Killing players/npcs with Soulsucker, damage over time from bleed/poison/plague, gravity/environmental damage, or in-game enemies will not affect your character tendency. For world tendency it doesn’t matter how they die.
3. For all of the world tendency effects, it is the host’s world tendency that matters. Your world tendency in your own world will not affect anything while you are invading/helping as a black/blue phantom.
4. You explain how to take your world tendency from pure black to pure white which includes killing both the black phantom npc and primeval demon for that archstone. This is correct but it should be made clear that you have to kill them both in one go, meaning without fast traveling or saving and quitting at any point before killing them both. If you kill one or the other, then reload the area by saving and quitting or fast traveling, the other will not be there when you come back because you raised your world tendency too high for them to spawn by killing the first one. The reason for this is that any actions you take to change your world tendency won’t show any effect until you reload the area. The good thing about this is that dying doesn’t count as reloading the area. So if you die after killing one of them, the other will still be there as long as you don’t reload the area.
I agree that the tendency systems are horribly convoluted and inadequately explained in game.
I really like this comment. You are correct in all four points. This is information that I know, but either made a mistake in saying something erroneous or in omitting a detail.
Point Four struck me particularly hard. I learnt about it the hard way and it cost me more than one game cycle. I definitively should have made a note about it in the video.

Your video is the most in-depth one I’ve seen on this for sure too, and the stuff I added is all from save scumming and testing things myself. The wikis don’t even have all the information, and between the two of us there might still be some things not covered.
Even just calling it something like “Karma” instead of “Tendency” would have helped players guess as to what would affect it. You ought to pin my comment or add it to the description, eventually this video will blow up when more PS5s become available.

There is a really good physical fan-made guide of Demon's Souls on PS3 that comes with the Black Phantom Edition and it was a highly detailed explanation of every mechanic in the game including this. I regret selling my PS3 copy because I had never seen so much fan dedication to a game before. This game was truly a cult classic but sadly it was too niche and eventually forgotten.

It's a best guide. Subbed. It maybe not be very complicated, but the problem is that game is not giving enough information to the player what does what and with what intensity exactly.
Lets give that comparision:
When I'm upgrading the weapon with degree and type of upgrade, I'm able to test it directly in game, if it is a good upgrade for this type of weapon and my stats or not,
but if I will die in body or defeat a boss, the eye will look the same for a new player, almost always. Game will not tell you this, must look for a yt guide (it should be written on a floor in the nexus)

Very informative video, thank you! It seems like someone at Fromsoftware had all these great and unique ideas for this game, wrote them all on a napkin, and never knew how to properly execute them. I'm watching this video half thinking how cool this stuff is, yet how horrible it must be to try and see it all!
You are not wrong. Demon's Souls is the first game and you can see the philosophy that FromSoft wanted to implement. They made some obvious mistakes but we see them fixed in later Souls games. It is the first step of an incredible series. I don't like the Tendency System, but I accept it as a necessary evil for evolution to take place. We got Elden Ring because of these mistakes. I discovered the effect of tendency just now that i’ve cleared some areas…
If i’ve killed the penetrative there is now way I am going to change my tendency for the first world, is that correct?
You can still change the Tendency of World 1 by killing the blue and red dragons. There is also PvP. Thank you for your comment.
I'll 100% agree with you on the tendency system it was executed extremely badly and although this is an amazing game a lot of players just can't get thier head around how all of it works including me so i hate the system with a passion ! iv watched loads of videos and yours is the best by far so well done i really appreciate the upload 👏 my world tendency is definitely all at moment 100% pure white ( all the worlds ) yet my character tendency has a whiteness to it with black and purple colour in it, sorry its hard for me to explain 🙈 i want my character tendency to get it to pure white like all my worlds are but don't know where iv gone wrong as every time iv killed a boss iv return to the nexus and jump to my death to keep it white 🤷♀️ dunno where I'm going wrong as the tendency system is very confusing 🤔 I'm on ng + 6 now 😂 yeah adore this game that much, I can't play on line either as iv no internet 😔
The Tendency System is one of the best signs that tell you that Demon's Souls is the first game of the series. It is a good idea that was executed very poorly. I have reached PWWT, collected all Ceramic Coins, and done all White Tendency events. I am 2-2 now and received the Pure Greystone from Scirvir. I think it would be ok to kill Scirvir to reduce my World Tendency towards Black, but it is unclear how this impacts my Character Tendency so I can get the Ally Ring. Is it best to not kill Scirvir and suicide to get Stonefang Tunnel to PBWT? Thanks, nice job on these videos.
Good question. If you are looking to get the Ally's Ring by reaching Pure White Character Tendency then you should definitely NOT kill Scivir.
Killing the Human NPC's is a great way of getting a good push towards Black Tendency and it would be recommended if you did not care about Character Tendency. That said, you are looking to keep up your Character Tendency, so it is not the best strategy.

@@FrownyGaming Thanks I saved and tried not killing and killing Sciver, and I didn't see a change in my Character Tendency! I think it is okay to kill him, but I messed up and forgot to get the Ceramic Coins in PBWT and will have to go back later for that one coin there.
So if I understand correctly If I get pure black character tendency I can get red phantom pve’s to spawn...meaning I get to keep my pure white worlds?
I need a black phantom to spawn to raise my world tendency in shrine of storms but im offline and I killed all the bosses :/ and its just stuck at white and I dont want to go to ng+ just yet.
No. Black Phantom NPC's are tied to WORLD Tendency, not CHARACTER Tendency. This means that, in order to have a Black Phantom NPC spawn, the corresponding Archstone needs to be in Pure Black World Tendency.
Judging by your situation, without access to online, you will need to go to NG+ to get Shrine of Storms to Pure White. Hope this cleared it up for you. Thank you for your comment.

What if I kill him with gas instead (since they don’t count apparently)? Edit: Nevermind, I got him and it didn’t affect my character tendency at all, I checked with my regalia and it’s still the same.
If the npc black phantoms die from fall damage, will this also not change your character tendancy or is that only for invading players?
If NPC Black Phantoms fall to their death, it will not affect Character Tendency. You need to deal the finishing blow. Thank you for your comment.
I kind of want to do a challenge run at some point where I shift all worlds to Pure Black ASAP and maintain Pure Black the whole game.

I like world tendency it allows the player to choose between easy mode(pure white) and hard mode (pure black). Playing in pure black is very rewarding, more souls are obtained and the drop rates for rare items are higher, and the fact that the player can be killed in 1 or 2 hits makes this feel like a survival horror game,, its awesome. However it should be easier for the player to shift from black to white tendency if they wanted to
That's basically like having a difficulty slider in the game, but with additional rewards. Honestly, I believe that this does not fit the general feeling of the Souls. White Tendency or Black Tendency is not a choice. It is a consequence of your actions. We have tools to manipulate it, but we cannot truly control it. Thank you for your comment.
20:24 I might be wrong, but once I wanted to kill both the black phantom and the primeval demon in one run, so I dont have to bring down the tendency again. I killed the primeval demond and without reseting or teleporting I ran to the black phantom and It wasnt there, then I realised that It was only black tendency, not pure black, my point is that I think primeval demons are spawning at black tendency already: 6:12 Or at least, this is the only explenation I can think of why this happened

Correct. Character Tendency is separate from World Tendency. It is easier to change Character Tendency online, but it can still be done offline. For example, if you kill innocent NPC’s (merchants), it will shift to Black Character Tendency. Hope this helps. Thank you for your comment.

This sounds like a tough situation. If you do not want to hit NG+ yet, then the best way to get the final bump into Pure White is to defeat an invading phantom. Thank you for your comment.

Alright, in order to help you, I will need a bit more information. What do you mean that "you can't move". Are you really physical unable to move?
In order to avoid a World getting to Pure Black, the best way is to play in Soul form. That way you can die as many times as you need without affecting World Tendency. Thank you for your comment.

I was trying to read a message that was near the archstone that sends you to the end of the game and I didn't have anything to get back to the Nexus.

Hahaha, I agree. This system isn't very good. I tried my best to enjoy this game with fresh eyes being a long time FromSoft fan and a first time Demon's Souls player (and without using any sort of guide on my first playthrough), and I was a little disappointed. It's still a fantastic game, but wow, I wish I knew how bad I was screwing up. This game doesn't really allow too much for experimentation, which is very unfortunate, given the sandbox-ish nature of the typical "Soulsborne" experience. Anyways, thanks for an excellent video. I'll be sure to dive back into this game with a fresh character after I forget about all the frustration.
Demon’s Souls, being the very first game, definitely had some mechanics that were not very friendly. There were very serious consequences for making mistakes. You can tell how much FromSoft has learned throughout the years when you play Demon’s Souls.

Did you know the ps3 version has a dupe glitch not patched on ps5. This glitch allowed me to dupe and use boss souls of every stage lots of times. By SL 180 i had turned pure white everywhere by just doing this. I feel theres a hidden mechanic based on how many times you kill and use boss souls too.
The Remake was an almost complete replica of the original code. Very few things were changed/added. It does not surprise me that the glitch made it. Personally, I do not use any of these exploits when I play but it certainly seems very effective as amassing materials. Thank you for your comment.
@@FrownyGaming i only do it on ps3 because its the quickest way to get a platinum and save time farming. Loading screens are slow and the digital game version is an awful port.
It was also used only for pvp builds. It allows you to dupe souls, stones, and anything consumable.
But i played this game a lot back in the day. The game is really easy in ps3. All you need is firestorm and all bosses are dead. Poison cloud for dragon and doran
But what if you already killed all the bosses and ur in black and u wanna go back to pure white how are u supposed to do that if u can only fight the bosses the 1 time?????

How to change world tendency to pure White without killing bosses?
You need to defeat Black Phantom players that invade your world. Each Black Phantom that you defeat will get you +30% Tendency. Thank you for your comment.

I didn't realize how shit Demon's Souls world tendency system was until I played many Souls games after playing the original Demon's Souls on PS3 which didn't include this system. This faulty mechanic has the ability to competely ruin a playthrough, thereby forcing players to handicap themselves as a means of sidestepping this terrible mechanic.
This forces players to pretty much play through the entire game in soul form which means you can't utilize your full heath bar for majority of the game. It also forces players to tie up one of two ring slots with the Cling ring, so they'll be limited to two 3rds of their full health bar instead of 1 half. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️

I'd agree, by and large, but 'forcing us to use the cling ring' is a silly assertion. I seldom use it past the earliest game (at least for general play, i do tend to pop it back on at Boss time)
Edit: It *is* a shit system. I loathe it. I loathe that i have to basically watch a video essay to finally get a handle on it for trophies. Once you have some hit points you can switch from cling to other stuff though~ (eg regen for most level clears)
Yeah, it was a bit of an exaggeration to say we are forced to use it. There are some good options after you level up Vitality, but Cling is just too useful.
@@Eunostos I obviously wasn't referring to you specifically, or even every single gamer who has ever played the game, but the bulk gamers who have run across this game in general (the original PS3 version and the remake). Because of this system it has become a common ritual to kill yourself in the Nexus to sidestep the ill effects of the dreaded world tendency system, then to equip the Cling Ring to mitigate the toll to your health bar that comes along with playing in soul form.
You can decided to ditch the Cling ring later on if you'd like, but it doesn't change the fact that you have an even lower heath bar than you would with it, or many deaths that did occur wouldn't have occurred if world tendency didn't exist in the game and you had access to your full heath bar. I still enjoy the game as many others do. Hell, I finished around 10 playthroughs on PS3 back in the day and around 4 thus far on PS5. But that doesn't change fact that players shouldn't have to handicap themselves at any point in a game to avoid a potentially game breaking mechanic, or the fact that the world tendency system doesn't mesh with the game as the devs intended, which is likely why it has never appeared in another Souls game since.

When I played this on PS3, I could not get a handle of what was going on with World Tendency. That is why I set out to make this guide for the Remake. I hate the mechanic and I am glad that it is gone. Thank you for your comment.

The world tendency is fantastic. I love it. I wish it was carried over to another game.
I think you might the only viewer who has commented that they enjoy the system. It normally gets a lot of hate. I won't lie. I am happy that it is gone. It is over complicated and it doesn't really provide a lot of values to the game. Still, if they were to improve upon it and make it less tedious, I would give it another chance. Demon’s Souls is the first game in the series. It made some really good decisions that made it very popular. The Tendency System was NOT one of them. It is overly complicated and not fun to use. That’s why it has not returned in any other game.
This guide can give you the information you need in about 20 minutes, and then the other half of the video is every Tendency event. You can just consult those as you need them.

This is a stupid mechanic. Punish the player by making the game harder (black tendency). And forcing the player to be near perfect in order to make the game easier? (White tendency)
This is the worst part of the game. What garbage game design. Especially when the whole meaning of souls games is dying and learning enemy patterns and getting better. U cant focus on that when the game is punishing you even more each time u die. 🙄😒
Adaptive difficulty should have been the best choice here. If the player is struggling then make things abit easier. But if the player overcomes challenges, then make it harder!
Plus the fact that certain tendencies are required to trigger in game events like having a door open or something else, is so f*cking stupid. Which means if you really suck at the game, then enjoy being punished with harder enemies and challenges etc and never really getting anywhere. What bullsh*t.😡😒
So dumb question: if you complete the quest of an NPC from pure white tendency, will you be able to encounter their black phantom version when you shift to pure black?
