RARE 'Manual' Jaguar F Type Review - Should you buy a convertible in winter ?

  • The arrival of winter is often when convertible owners think of moving their car on and replacing it with a tin top. However, I think that winter is actually the best time to buy a convertible and in this video I explain why.
I pay a visit to Anthony James Cars to look at a range of convertibles at different price points before going for a drive in a very rare car. A Jaguar F Type V6 Convertible with a manual gearbox.
Check out the latest stock at Anthony James Cars on their website...

You can’t beat a F Type, the soundtrack is incredible and being a manual just tops it off. Some stunning cars in that garage. The red Porsche Cayman is something else 👍👍

Hi a have a V6S manual convertible and had it nearly 3yrs and love it to bits ,I use it a couple of times a week ,it's had a stage 1 to 402bhp. I'm 6'1 and never had a issue with comfort .put it into dynamic mode and it's loud as hell ,makes up for the silent Tessa's.

Great car, I was fortunate enough to have a track day gift for my birthday, I drove an F Type R 4x4 575 BHP, I was truly astonished how that car drove, bye far the most powerful car I had ever driven, I would love to have one, maybe in a few years fingers crossed. Thanks for this! Its F type all the way for me.

Love the F Type. For work I have the Mitsubishi hybrid, so totally auto.
For fun, I run a Z4 3 litre manual, loads more fun changing down , blipping the engine round descending corners. The new Z4 is auto, so I won’t be changing this bus, it’s now 10 years old and I’ve owned it for 9 years.
Tin roof up for winter, but come the warmer weather ……….
    Great video.

V6 F Type has always been the sweet spot. great balance, amazing soundtrack and just great fun. Just need to pack light. on a run it will easily do 33 to 34 MPG. But it never does, because it's such fun to give it a blast! Great to find a manual Pete. Happy New year to you. Great start. I bet if you had got in the 718 S you would have reminded yourself it has a "naf" sounding 4 cylinder engine. Still a great car, but never as exciting or as viseral as the F type.

@@PetrolPed The GTS 4.0 and the GT4 are spot on. The 2.5l 4 cylinder less so in my humble opinion. But then, I drive a Taycan 4S without the electronic sports sound - loving the silent drive. Rather have no sound than something made up - it is the most effortless car in the world with the best ride ever - that car levitates across the road. 911GT3 at 9000 rpm, well that is emotional? I guess you might agree :-)

We love our Abarth 124 and it's a perfect all rounder all year round. Mrs McVitie would love an F Type, but we can't fit it in our garage!! That F Type looked like it need new wiper blades or a deep clean of the glass perhaps...?? It certainly sounded awesome!!

Very nice manual shifting indeed! I've recently been driving f-pace with 3.0 V6 w/ charger, for a week. It was a lot better than I expected. Loved it. I can imagine f-type would be awesome as it's lighter and w/ manual, so less losses in the tranny.

Great video Pete as usual. This idiot bought a convertable F Type V8R last year just after the first lockdown. I bought it from somewhere in Norfolk. Now, its the driest part of the country, at the warmest time of year. On the day it was freezing and raining as hard as in your video. I fell in love with the car and bought it anyway. God I love it. I rarely have the roof up because I have a garage and I will go out on any sunny day with my boy just for fish and chips or to a coffee shop somewhere, as long as it is a ling drive away. Ive had the roof down yo as cold as -1 and as long as the heated seats snd blowers are working ( and a hat on my baldy head ), its an absolute joy to hear that engine grumbling away. ( Im sorry, the V6 may be good, but Im all about the noise, and yhe V8 is always better!!). Keep up the great vids Pete. 😁👍

I advised my son to buy a convertible in the dead of winter and he got a great car, no leaks sound was minimal in the car he really enjoyed it in the summer. He only got rid of it as someone drove into it while it was parked and drove off. Judging from your drive and it is raining there were no leaks and performance was good. winter is the best time to buy a convertible. Trust me i have allays done this for may a year if i wanted a convertible

Hi Ped, used to have a V6 Merc CLK cab & it was a daily for over 4 years.
Great car & so well insulated that after being covered in snow, the roof stayed covered after driving it when all the tin tops had melted theirs (the insulation in the roof wadding was that good at keeping heat in the car)!
Added to that, as soon as the sun came out & the rain stopped, it was always heater, heated seats & shades on.... roof down 😎
As for a 2 seater soft top, @ 6' 3" i have the same issue with leg room.
Budget allowing @ that showroom, i'd take the 911 mate. 👍🏻

Less choice but lower prices for a winter purchase but I was looking for 14 months for 'the one'. Winter tyres and hardtop on, Z4 could be dailyd(?) but with 2 4wd available, saved for those dry, sunny winter days. I saw an article that Jaguar UK only sold 9 manual F types in all of 2019. According to the stats, the auto box is faster at 0-60mph, which might be another reason that the manual doesn’t sell? They are very frisky in the wet, which is why they have a snow/rain setting to calm them down. I bought a 3.0V6 auto and the sound of the engine is almost as exhilarating as the forward propulsion!

I drove my Audi TT Roadster all winter long when I lived in the Rocky Mountains. The stars at high elevation, particularly where there are little or no city lights, are magnificent. As long as there was neither rain or snow, I would lower the top, turn up the heat and the seat heaters and steering wheel heater and drive. It was delightful. Did others find me odd? Maybe, but watch the Northern Lights, meteor showers or just a clear starry night just once when driving and I bet you too would lower the top.

Lots of big Ped grins driving this Jag. Love the manual, is it a Getrag box? Looked to have a really lovely gate on it. We have had two convertibles, an SLK 200 manual, which had for 5 years, when we lived in Hampshire. Rule was top down as long as it was dry, loved the air-scarf. Second car was a BMW Z4 2.5 six cylinder, lovely motor, but hideous depreciation, had to let it go after a year unfortunately! Sorely tempted by that F Type 😎😍

Bought the first convertible ( Spitfire) in 1968 and we have had one in the family ever since. Even when we lived in Switzerland we drove the BMW 3 series convertible all year round and believe me in the mountains it got quite cold with a little snow!!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, my old Z3M roadster after 17 years became too difficult for me to get in with the roof up so I sold it to another enthusiast who currently has it in Spain. Out of all the cars I saw the 991 GTS would be my choice but I think I will still keep Erica ( as seen in Porsche Perfection, Peters covid video).

    Hi Ped
Great car for a reasonable price. Not for me however, like yourself, interior space and boot space rules it out. I know we ought to support home built products, but my choice would be 911 Carrera (4 please) or 718 Boxter GTS. Why not buy in winter, if the price is right, but the s/h market is crazy.

My 2016 with an aftermarket carplay is great (Harry M. has a video on doing the same unit). Greatest 300 dollars/pounds you can spend on an F type.....imho.
Coupe in the F-type is my preference...awd. Done. The reason it has not sold better (manual) is that the ZF8 is so good.

Sorry mate cant agree with you on this one, I have an f type r with carbon brakes, before I got it I test drove v6 and v8 awd and purposely went with an early v8 r to get rear wheel drive. See my use of this car is only in good weather and the rear wheel drive is much quicker and more responsive than the awd plus a lot lighter, and the weight saving is from the front, so my v8 r is lighter than a v6 awd and with the carbon brakes is quite a bit lighter, anyway love the channel and thanks for all the hard work 👍

That car would look good on our driveway to replace our manual JCW, sitting next to our Black E Pace. It is one car I would consider replacing the Mini with not because it is a Jag necessarily but a V6. My ZS180 MG with its 2.5L V6 sounded awesome and then when fitted with an induction kit took it to a different level. I would love another V6 but if the 5 miles per Litre I got from the MG was replicated across all V6's I would have a hard time justifying that as a purchase with fuel prices at todays level. Guess I will be sticking with the Mini for now.

    • @abacusfencing
      @abacusfencing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My V6 f type easily achieves 8 miles/L (36mpg) on motorway or good A road and I have seen 9/L (41mpg) on occasion.
However if all your journeys are short on 30mph roads it will be around 6/L.

@@abacusfencing Thanks for the update. If an owner can afford that level of consumption I am sure the experience of an F Pace makes up for the cost of fuel.

I'm really not a ragtop type, but it is something best to buy out of season. :) (But I'm just a bit of a fan of the V6 manuals. I'd actually really love the coupe, maybe in that sort of putty-taupe some E-types came in. :) )

@@OllamhDrab There were two Jaguar colours that fit the time and are similar. One was the lavender shade that also appeared on XJ models but the more dramatic “pink/lavender” shade was most often found on V12 E Types and a few Daimler/XJC V12 models with a black vinyl roof . Heather looked unexpectedly nice on an E-Type convertible if cared for and polished but it was one of the less popular choices. 🙂🙂🙂

Had a manual F-Type which I purchased from Lloyd Jaguar.
Strange noise started as if the timing belt was slipping when I pressed the clutch.
The Jag dealer had it in 3 times and the last time the garage had the car for 2 months, eventually stating they were struggling to fix the car as they dont work on manual F-Types.
We eventually rejected the car so for me I wouldn't own a manual again!!!!
