idk, gettiing the shot is more important than a sharper shot, I would say second lens should always be extending your focal range, a telephoto or a super wide would give you the chance to get more shots

Well said. Have been a full time photographer since 2013 and as someone who have used Sony 24mm , 35mm , 50mm , 85mm with 1.4 and also Tamron 35-150 f2, I would say 50mm is one of the best focal lengths.
Also currently using Sony 50mm 1.2 & 85mm 1.4 (sigma DG DN) as my main lens options for weddings, outdoor and government functions.

Great video, my only gripe was you hinting that a new photographer should already be thinking about upgrading to full-frame. I would have much preferred just explaining that 35mm is the 50mm equivalent for APS-C and that it might cost a little more, but that is fine considering they saved thousands on a camera.

nar. 50mm is 50mm. there will always be smaller and bigger sensors than full frame but it's the benchmark. APS-C and M43 will always try to make the 50mm FF equivalent down to the mm

But he does? At the beginning he mentions that APSC will be cropped in, and that he'd discuss it later in the video. He then proceeds to discuss it at 7:22, and talks about the equivalent 35mm.

@ I am referring to around 8:25 when he talks about upgrading to a full-frame camera, then even suggests making do with a cropped 50mm setup until you upgrade. While nothing he says is wrong, it really comes across as implying that an upgrade to full-frame should be in everyone’s future. I just don’t think that is a reasonable expectation to set for someone who is watching a video on their first lens.

100% agree, perfect balance of price and utility from beginner point of view
Recently got an 85mm 1.8 though.. after the kit lens for my A7C as my use case is mostly portraits.

I started portraits on the canon rebel t8i and picked up a 50 thinking it was a 50 (but like a 80) and was like woah i get it. then i learned what the heck i needed to and have tried a 35 on my 6700 and was like oh. the most interesting focal length? no. the best way to start. absolutely. now i know i love the 35mm (full frame) but dont think i wouldve really loved it without the 50mm trial run.

It’s a great focal length but 50mm primes are mostly going to give you more light and a shallower depth of field when wide open. If that’s precisely what you want then go for it; otherwise, I recommend getting either a significantly wider or a longer lens than the kit lens you most likely have. These types of lenses will allow you to experiment with many more compositions. Once you find the focal lengths that you do like the most, then you can invest in the primes for maximum quality. I say this as someone who hasn’t used his 50mm for years after buying one based on similar advice

For many purposes 35mm is the more versatile solution. But okay - 50mm is absolutely nice for many scenarios. A love mit Nifty-Fifty Canon RF 50mm f/1.8.

I will not recommend a 50mm lens as a beginner Lens, it should be either a 35mm Lens or a 85mm Lens ! 45 years experience as a professional and a teacher in photography.

50mm on FF is great for most type of photography. 35mm is great for APSC.
For specific purpose, it will change. 😊

7:43 so many photographers fail to realize that unless you're using a full frame lens on a apsc body its cropped but if you're using a lens designed for that sensor its still 50mm
