  • Urban exploration: Abandoned Soviet airbase in Germany (subtitles available) Episode #175
Once this was the biggest airfield in Eastern Germany with thousands of Soviet soldiers living here - but when the Iron Curtain was lifted, they left. For 30 years now, this has been a ghost town. In today's video, we set out to explore the vast remains - and even end up where the atomic bombs were stored that should have left Western Germany in ashes. Follow us to a Soviet wasteland! #urbex #abandonedplaces #bwturbex

We are offline for a few days while we are embarking on a new (non-urbex) adventure! We scheduled the upload of this video together with all of our recent and upcoming posts on social media - we hope it is working and you can see the new content. Although we can't read it right now, we (and the TH-cam algorithm) would be happy to get your comments. We are back online in a few days and will catch up! If you are wondering: We are in Sardinia for the first two weeks of June before we head over to the mainland for a sequel of the fan-favorite series "Abandoned Italy"! Would you also be interested in an "Abandoned Italy: Sardinia" spinoff?

As a travel enthusiast, I had the opportunity to travel to Russia the year after the fall of the Soviet Union. I visited both Moscow and St Petersburg. Traveled via overnight rail. What an experience! The U.S. Dollar (new) was worth 50 rubles. Surprisingly, I was able to travel without my guide. I took their Metro got lost and was assisted by a local who took me to my train stop. The price of a two liter bottle of coke was triple the cost of vodka. Grocery stores were empty. It was a once in a lifetime travel adventure.

This reminds me to our experiences in Betlin (Est) on the enter of '89/'90. We live in the west of Berlin. You only took our U-Bahn, Friedrichstraße es the border, and upstairs you reached a complete different country. We smuggled money, had changed it in the west before. For 1.-DM ou received around 25 .- east, while in the east they changed 1:1.
We bought bold, the stores were empty like after an Apokalype. I payed more than 50.- for a chocolate. The dolls in the big store at Alexanderplatz ALL had sunken heads bc of the shortage of plastic. I could write for hours, nd I truly miss it.

Ah, the Op Wasteland base! I thought I recognised the thumbnail! Good to see more of the area.
Those brick buildings certainly look like they could predate the Soviets, it's not uncommon for them to just expand an existing facility. Cross-reference RAF recon photos from the 1940s and you can see what was added, and what was inherited.
