I don't understand why so many people are down on the design. I think it is pretty sharp and appreciate the interesting styling. If it only had a viewfinder. I've also heard that the green button is inconveniently placed, which is surprising that Pentax allowed that to happen.
1080p with full manual control and 720p at 60 fps - Pentax is finally there. I love this camera. It is a clear advancement despite the size. Keep inventing...
@SlaveNCMC Actually, this was shot with a Panasonic AF100, Zeiss 35mm F1.4, Panasonic/Leica 25mm F1.4, and Olympus 12mm F2. We planned to use some Pentax Limited lenses, but forgot the adaptor in the car. Like pros. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Thanks for posting this Camera Store, great to see a video with people holding it and showing the various k-lenses to get a better sense of the camera compared to just photos. I'm not crazy on the design either but it seems ok. I really wanted something smaller than my K20D but could accommodate my K mount lenses. I'll need to see one in person to get a sense of the size and bulk and am also anxious to see some sample images.
The 81-point contrast-detect autofocus system is by far the item of most interest, as such a system has yet to be deployed as the primary AF mechanism on a K-mount camera.
I am usually not a Pentax guy, but this may be one I look at. I love the way it looks honestly. But I also drive a Honda Element, so I kind of like the "box" look.
@KonsTrue10 Chris said it was ugly and compared it to a Volvo. If he was being forced to say nice things, he wasn't being forced very hard. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Thank you for a world exclusive on the K-01. I agree that it looks totally weird and has that "not built by a photographer look." Not discounting it entirely, but yeah. However, I think we should address a more serious question about this camera: Since it takes up so much space to allow for regular Pentax lenses, why not just fit a mirror and pentaprism in there? What's the point of losing those when you still have the size?
No, unfortunately. Check out the Pentax K-30 if you're looking for an inexpensive weather-sealed camera with fantastic image quality. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@myatchin I think it might. But still, it will have focus peaking. This creates lines on the sharp parts of the image, so you can manual focus very fast and efficiently, this is a big selling point for me for both video and photography as you use the screen with both.
You do awesome reviews. Not kissing your ass but you seem to mention "little details" about cameras that other reviews always forget. Makes a huge difference. I still remember your GH2 review in the snow. Keep it up!
Wow you guys got it fast! Jordan, you better post this on pentaxforums or I will :) Looks so retro, I love it. Rubber everywhere, grip everywhere. Thick because it needs to support the k-mount. K-5 sensor, you know it's going to have good image quality. No EVF, neither did the Nex3 nor Nex5 when they came out - expect something to come out in the future. Thinner than my k-x, I can slip this in my outwerwear pocket with the 40mm XS and have a great long normal backup to my dslr.
The pandemic's got me a bit down so I'm re-watching the old videos for the awkward nostalgic feeling it gives me and OMG YOU GUYS LOOK LIKE FRESH LITTLE BABIES. How can this only be 8 years ago!? No grey hair, no extra padding, probably less kids... the discomfort of this kind of mental time travel sure has a kick to it. Someone local is selling one of these awful cameras, I wonder if I should buy it for the entertainment value...
Did I see a pimp slap in there? The looks of the camera has grown on me. In yellow I think its very cool. Cameras are becoming fashion accessories and thats a good thing. Photography is no longer about crusty guys in photo vests.
I just bought one in singapore. I paid 400 Singaporean dollars, with pancake lens . Brand New. I found it very different to use . I gave it to my wife and she just love's it . She has very little experience with photography.
I like it, first i thought like "WTF IS THIS~!?!?!" But it is a gap in the mirrorless camera market. It is only a little thicker than a NEX camera if you attach the lenses. The NEX lenses need to be a bit longer in general due to the small flange distance that makes lens design difficult, this one has the longer flange distance that makes lens design much easier. Also inbody stabilisation is a welcome addition i think. I wish it was available in all aluminium color.
This camera is getting discounted quite heavily. The body only is around US$300, honestly I'm quite tempted. The camera design is quirky, but I kind of like it.
@SpeedFreakNO well, if you like it... then I'm happy for you! But quite honestly and aesthetically speaking, I am sure Pentax won the Ugliest Digital Camera of 2012 already!
I don't get the American perception of beauty. To me, this camera is one of the best looking camera's. It's Retro'ish, it reminds me of the old analog camera's and in addition to that it's a nice solid camera.
@murkom haha.. i thought the same thing when he said that.. "Look at this camera... itss... ehm... MODERN"... I'm sure he didn't have any other thing to say about it!
Love your videos - Tell me when it will match the sales of similar spec cameras - just feel Pentax gives you IQ quality and good glass but these off the wall styles - I just do not think this will sell well - users like the retro look like X100/s from Fuji and OMD-5 from OMD-5 proof - camera so thick - for Pentax to stay afloat they have to work on styling - K5's nice - but this will be a flop like some models from them in recent years - such shame as Pentax gives you good value for the money
@GW690II It has a bigger handgrip as mentioned in the video and I believe all the buttons are easier to access. Anyway I really think it'd be easier for me to hold this than the anorexic NEX cameras..
Pentax were desperate to get this to market. It's like someone's taken a hacksaw to the K5. A DSLR without the SLR. No articulating screen? No LCD viewfinder? It'll be know as the Brick. Someone rummaged in the Pentax parts bin and this is the result, and designed by someone who doesn't design cameras. Ironically it'll likely produce images to rival the Fuji X-Pro1 and has brilliant video specs. Oh Pentax, why couldn't you have just tried a bit harder?!
Wow, it's a baby Chris. So this is the camera he wants Jordan to use...
Honestly this is the 1st time I've heard of this classic/monstrosity camera - I came here from Jordan's tweet after DPreview got 300k subs
I don't understand why so many people are down on the design. I think it is pretty sharp and appreciate the interesting styling. If it only had a viewfinder. I've also heard that the green button is inconveniently placed, which is surprising that Pentax allowed that to happen.

I'm here to see how this camera will work out for Jordan in the coming episodes on DPR TV :3

Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Pentax. No one can compete with the Limited lenses! ;)
@myatchin We're not sure yet. Autofocus was not functioning in our sample camera.

i love it you can still put it in your pocket with that small lens and has a real grip to it just wish there was a viewfinder
i think it looks lovely
"It's like the Volvo of cameras...."
Ahahahah
I bought a k01 in Singapore, its a good camera but not perfect. In time it will become a collector's item. The pancake lens are unique. Good video .
The 81-point contrast-detect autofocus system is by far the item of most interest, as such a system has yet to be deployed as the primary AF mechanism on a K-mount camera.

That bad ass bass is The Legend, by Platinum Alibi. It's available on iTunes.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@eyeofaliphotography The designer is Marc Newson, and his stuff is actually pretty amazing.
Thank you for a world exclusive on the K-01. I agree that it looks totally weird and has that "not built by a photographer look." Not discounting it entirely, but yeah.

Is this a good camera for filming? Thank you in advance for the review.
@myatchin I think it might. But still, it will have focus peaking. This creates lines on the sharp parts of the image, so you can manual focus very fast and efficiently, this is a big selling point for me for both video and photography as you use the screen with both.
@wolfganglui That's the amazing 43mm F1.9 Limited lens. You should want one.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
And can I say the K-r is a very nice camera, fairly low cost, but it doesn't feel or take pictures like an entry camera.
if this guy doesn't like how it looks then i'm certainly buying it!
You do awesome reviews. Not kissing your ass but you seem to mention "little details" about cameras that other reviews always forget. Makes a huge difference.
I still remember your GH2 review in the snow.
Keep it up!
I love the design.
The EOS M needs an EF adapter I'm pretty sure, the K-01 has a KAF-3 bayonet mount, no adapter required.
Wow you guys got it fast! Jordan, you better post this on pentaxforums or I will :)

Very Innovative
youre not alone. i love e looks of it. bought it last week for 770usd
@eyeofaliphotography It is unique in the mirrorless marked. And it looks great.
It's almost like a mirrorless K-x. Going to look hilarious with my 50-135 on the front, which is a good thing, because hilarious is the way I roll.
Would be nicer if we can see more detail of the camera with other different lenses attached, e.g the FA/DA limited series.
Using a K5 at present! love it! Would also love a RED one of these!
Brilliant camera kit at 3:24

When's the Olympus E-M5 hands-on coming?
Did I see a pimp slap in there? The looks of the camera has grown on me. In yellow I think its very cool. Cameras are becoming fashion accessories and thats a good thing. Photography is no longer about crusty guys in photo vests.
What is the metal body lens attached at 0.24s?
That is one very interesting looking lens indeed.
Fun. Except for the look, but I could live with it. The performance is more important to me. Cool that it uses k lenses
@TheCameraStoreTV I am pretty sure its a FA 77mm f/1.8
I just bought one in singapore. I paid 400 Singaporean dollars, with pancake lens . Brand New. I found it very different to use . I gave it to my wife and she just love's it . She has very little experience with photography.
Good video with a great ending.
Looks like an old Holga camera...
I kinfa like it!
12 years old video, im buying this camera in 2024.
Me too how has the Pentax k-01 been if you picked it up.
I like it, first i thought like "WTF IS THIS~!?!?!" But it is a gap in the mirrorless camera market. It is only a little thicker than a NEX camera if you attach the lenses. @TheCameraStoreTV that's not the 43mm 1.9... it's the 31mm 1.8
TheCameraStoreTV - Hope it's not too late in the game to ask, but is it possible to see photos/videos taken with this K-01? I
Its awesome!!!
It will well for what it was designed to do, hold the door open.
It's 2023, when is the Chris/Dave rematch? And who won this fight?
Thank you this video really the first ever
This video was shot using Pentax camera. The bagic mokeh helped me to understand that :-D
What is your source about the sensor not being the same as the one in the K-5. Pentax Forums says it's the same.
Was that a Tokina 11-16 2.8 you used during the sit down?
canon should release a new G series mirrorless on which you can put any SLR lens.... now that would be awesome!!!
looks different but I like it!
@SpeedFreakNO well, if you like it... then I'm happy for you! But quite honestly and aesthetically speaking, I am sure Pentax won the Ugliest Digital Camera of 2012 already!
@TheCameraStoreTV I very much hoped. if there is a disappointment
1:05 "Look at this camera... itss... ehm... modern".
Thank you, enough.
Body design is odd but you know like pickles.. sometimes that tastes good.
APS-C CMOS.. K mount I see no troubles :)
I don't get the American perception of beauty. To me, this camera is one of the best looking camera's. It's Retro'ish, it reminds me of the old analog camera's and in addition to that it's a nice solid camera.
I can hear Kai's evil laugh in HK from this side of earth, I swear.
@godsakes Or Dave at the end, you mean...
This'd go nice with my kx and k5
@godsakes Haha! I understand now!
Is this weatherproof?
RETRO style, Nice!
I love my “brick” - though Pentax seems to not want acknowledge that this was mirrorless.
Chris you look so young
Is it boxy because it's a film camera?
Should have been full frame with a large EVF. Then it wouldn't matter how big and ugly it was because people wouldn't care.
I like it :)
年轻时候的胡子哥哈哈哈哈哈
@murkom haha.. i thought the same thing when he said that.. "Look at this camera... itss... ehm... MODERN"... I'm sure he didn't have any other thing to say about it!
It's uhh.... modern.... yeah that's pretty much it, Marc Newson
How bout that NSX advertisement?
Dave was sure giving chris a beating :p
I bet if the cameraman zoomed out you'd see a Pentax rep pointing a gun at Chris' head
what song is that killer bass intro from?
@LasstUnsSpielen I don't know, I quite like it
From worlds smallest four thirds to worlds biggest nice wrk Pentax
if the pentax is the first mirrorless camera that takes SLR lenses, what is the EOS M then? Not a mirrorless camera perhaps?.... hmmm....
have autofocus in video?
I never understood why anyone would choose to buy pentax over other camera manufactures.
Is this camera with the lens worth $300 USD?
this camera is designed by marc newson.

WHEERRREEEEE IS THE FULLLLL FRAME DSLRRRRRRR!?
It is a cute dSLR. However Pentax never was powerful with digital SLR cameras.
@GW690II It has a bigger handgrip as mentioned in the video and I believe all the buttons are easier to access. Anyway I really think it'd be easier for me to hold this than the anorexic NEX cameras..
Dave have IMHO great physics and genetics for bodybuilding... to bad he is more into eating ;)
sooo, you can't mount rangefinder lenses on this mirrorless camera
@Rationalific However, it is very cheap and has an exceptional sensor
Are you gonna tell us why?
@KonsTrue10 did you not watch the video at all
Baby chris is somewhat 'chris hemsworthy'
