My character designing process:
1. *gets idea*
2. “Oh frick time to draw”
3. *intense scribbling that follows my idea for 4.3 seconds*
4. *blacks out for 10 minutes*
5. Character created
6. *never uses character*

whenever im developing characters i draw them with different objects (flowers, a book, blanket, etc etc) to see how they would interact with those things and it rlly helps !
Lol. I've actually done this unconsciously on my oc and I'd always draw them with a grocery bag😅

me as a hobby writer and artist:
-creates an oc for a book
-draws them once
-writes the book with the oc for few weeks
and the last step:
-imagines random stories and pics for them, even their instagram, but never draws of write about them anymore
anyone else like this? is it just me?

The reason why I create characters is simple
*They are never enough, I need more*
I love the characters broad shoulders, I have very broad shoulders (1’ 9” across I’m only 14) and so I usually draw girls with broad shoulders (on accident) but I haven’t seen a lot of artist drawing a feminine body type with strong, broad shoulders! 💛💛👌👌
Annie Porter I have the same issue, so a lot of my characters, regardless of gender, have tall, broad designs. Or, if you’re my main oc and his friend, you’re ridiculously soft and tiny lol

Ur lucky! Wow I have very small shoulder span for also being of same age. But it is funny because I tend to draw woman with small medium shoulders. You can see my bones through my skin on most of my body, so I am not surprised of my shoulders being small though. 💜
I have broad shoulders too, but they're useful since I'm transitioning lol. My neck/collarbone/shoulder area is actually the part of my body that I like the most...

My oc process is basically everything happens by accident lol
So when I'm doodling my Brian throws up an idea and I doodle a hair style or clothing. Then I base that character on the thing I doodled and that's it
I don't think that's the greatest way to design a character but it works for me

I based my latest OC (I think it's my first ever self-insert OC) on an already existing character AND a broken/cracked froggie shaped cap from a bubble wand. Turned out PERFECT!

My main two characters have been there for like years, they just evolved from being just a basic rectangle with a head on it to full characters. And the rest were created because I was drawing a random thing and liked the design lol

That's a separate sketchbook I made specifically for webcomic stuff, but as of filming this I'm about 3/4 the way done with my current sketchbook! I'm hoping to finish it by the end of the month but let's see if that actually happens

when i draw a character, i like to draw them with different expressions. Because i've noticed people smile differently. like I smile a little bit with anything, when my friend smiles wide at most everything. Just a point.
Me: *create a main oc*
Me: maybe I should get them a friend or two? *draws another characters*
Me: oh god they look cute together aight imma keep you all

That's me, totally. My main OC (which I literally came up with overnight when I was about to fall asleep) was created by me for my bff club and my handmade magazines since I wanted to create 2 mascots representin me and my bff. Days after I told her the concept she came up with a msgical girl transformation phrase, and we used it to roleplay as our characters, who werent just cute teenagers anymore, they were magical warriors! Then I came up with the villains (some of them based on mean kids I met in school, which I later kinda warmed up to, except for my nemesis, ofc) and a whole superhero team and a whole plot for a movie and I come up with episode ideas on a daily basis- I currently have about 6 seasons, 4 movies, some shorts and original songs.

Hello! I came early to make it easy for my comment to get seen. I just wanted to say your super greta at art!! Your also a huge inspiration and a huge part of why I started drawing, thank you for all the helpful tips on my journey to becoming a decent artist!
I never really started creating OCs until last year. Before then I only ever made like three but they were all fandom based so I stopped drawing them once I got out of those fandoms ^^' As of now I have five more that I made for like a comic about a band (haven't started it yet, I'm trying to make sure I'm completely satisfied with the way their designs and stuff are first) and they're basically my children, even though 4/5 are actually older than me lol

One thing that help me when im trying to design an oc (one of my childrenz) is to listen to something. Listening to something helps me concentrate.
I had a main character being a purple kinda antromorphic butterfly. Who is shrouded in mystery and has always closed eyes. Which fits into the story of big mystery.
I feel like triangles feel like an offensive type of strong while squares look like a defensive kind of strong.
i can make adorable characters and make them ‘unique’, i just can’t give them unique outfits, my brain just shuts off and i’m like “alright..... give them a long sleeve shirt with black pants and black shoes.... perfect”
I usually start with the look because that's easiest...it tends to change a bit as time goes on though, like when my style shifts, and when the character gets more developed.
You my fellow youtuber...are way more organized than I am in character designing. XD

a few years back, i was considered a god of designing oc's and coming us with new characters but sadly I took a massive pause and moved on to different fazes, my style changed a few times until I found the right one and I guess I want to get back into designing characters but my mind has erased so this really helped me, THANK YOU.

This is my personal way of creating my characters:
So I usually the all of a sudden get this picture of a character in my mind and any point of the day. I start to take notes on what this character looks like. I then begin my drawing, my characters personality ties along with what I am drawing. I have a picture in my mind, so I create personality with it. Now I have my character drawn, and their personality type. Now for a backstory. I like to think that my characters personality ties in with their behavior. Example: My character tends to be quiet around others so maybe they grew up with no siblings. So I create my characters backstory. Now my character need people in their life. So then I start creating my characters life story lol. Then when I am finished, I have my complete character.

I used to be inlove with drawing and making comics but never finish them. Then over time i got personal issues and stuff and forgot my drawings and gave up being an artist altogether. My art has never improved so i never tried again. But i got into writing more and tried to draw my characters so i can write better or describe the characters better. So im an "artist" who has more creativity flow in writing. I write more than draw these days. This video really helped me out to think of my new story characters! Thank you :)

This was really helpful!😺 Usually I design characters by creating an environment, or home for them. I'll have the character start as a silhouette adding details to their form after a move in location, like how you would take souvenirs with you on vacation. You follow your character's journey. After every thumbnail it gives me a sense of satisfaction to see how far they've come. It was fun to see how your process went.💕😸

Thanks! This is a sketchbook I made for webcomic stuff. It was originally a different sketchbook I bought at Ross, but I didn't like the size so I turned it into a smaller one. If you have a Ross available to you, I can recommend this sketchbook! The paper is nice for being so cheap, and since it's mixed media it handles my markers fairly well

I find I create the character concept/personality and write about them in story first before I ever really think deep about how they look and draw them out on paper. I only get to the inspiration stage and get a general idea of how they look. I’m going to try your method out and see how it goes. Thanks for sharing!

I love the colors you use for your different iterations. I also like how you write notes next to your sketches. It's a powerful way to keep track of things. Just to let you know, I actually love composing musical themes for OC's, ranging from Celtic, orchestral to epic battle music. I find that music can really help a character come to life and complement their visual presentation. Let me know if you ever need music for a character or project!
