I think the part you're missing is that it's not about it being a game. This is something these guys pour their heart and passion into, and so it becomes something human. It's no different to sports or any achievement, where we pour ever fibre of ourselves into something; so then of course we feel it when it comes to fruition, or when it fails, because it's not just the game on the line, it's *us*. I think all people, especially guys, feel that drive to overcome something, an obstacle.
Playing Counter-Strike is not playing any kind of game... I used to play Counter-Strike 1.6 back in 2011. I've learned around in 2004 and been playing until 2012 wich was the Last year i kept playing. In 2012 i joined the army and since then Counter-Strike Global Offensive got into this world... Had no machine to play that game back then and so it was my goodbye. But if i have learned something from that game is that if you are a real player that is right there to make your game memorable, taking it in all rounds seriously, than you dont even need to be in an actual tournament to feel not only the pressure of battling for winning but so the fact that each round is important to you for not making the same mistakes. Counter-Strike was the actual real game that marked my life in videogames. Cheers from Portugal!

I play cs competitively for eg, and though I doubt I'd ever cry over it, part of what is driving me to play at least at the moment is the desire to prove something to myself - to prove what I am capable of, that I can become not just a great player but one of the best players (in my scene anyway). But it's about proving that I can achieve that if I set my mind to it, about proving I can believe in myself - so whilst it is just a game it also becomes more when you consider motive.

I would take a guess that people who say 1.6 is a better game, base their opinion a lot on the nostalgia they probably feel, the same way people always say it was better when they where younger weather they where born 1960 or 1999. In the same way a lot of Minecraft players think alpha and beta verision of the game was better than how it is now (if you've played MC you will probably understand). CS: GO is now one of the largest eSports in the world, and, c'mon, even the 1.6 fans have to agree that CS: GO is more adapted to the eSports community in a lot of ways. The way the game is designed, it's a lot easier getting in to the entire eSport/competitive scene, and it's easier treating it as a real sport as well. Even i sometimes agree that 1.6 can look fancy and i wish i started playing it earlier but i never really see 1.6 fans bringing out arguments for why 1.6 is a better game, of course you can think so but i think it's important to be tolerant and understand that we are not all grown up with playing the classic versions.

These two games have huge difference in gameplay, especially in movement and aim (for example - in cs you need to spray and control recoil, in css there's more tapping (shooting from one to three bullets in a row max)).

I'm only going by interviews from famous League players. Most say their schedules involve 12 hours of practice a day (that includes scrims, solo queuing and strategizing as a team over videos/plans). Even if it was 7/6, that is still FAR more than a professional athlete of any other discipline that I know of.
I don't know if he made a good argument but coming from somebody who also played two sports in highschool baseball/football. I don't know if calling it a sport is a good classification of it i'd consider it more of a game like chess. It probably requires more dedication than any other sport in the world however with far less of a reward compared to any other professional level.
Not really, most of them are pretty well educated tbh, they just spend most of their free time before events to bootcamp and prepare for tournaments. Many of them already spoke about their lifes and how they manage time/studies/jobs/social life, ofc it takes a lot of commitment just like in professional sports. In example of that i can tell you guys you see on this video (at least on fx side) already got their master's degrees (taz for ex. a law degree) or were about to get them at that time.
I'm kind of surprised because you're not from the US and the culture of professional gaming has changed in most countries and is considered as if it were a sport. You don't understand the amount of dedication, preparation and time people put into games for such a small amount of around 75,000-125,000 a year. The average person doesn't either it's not something fake it's a lifestyle, passion and love for the game. It's an incredibly hard profession.

Not really, most of them are pretty well educated tbh, they just spend most of their free time before events to bootcamp and prepare for tournaments. Many of them already spoke about their lifes and how they manage time/studies/jobs/social life, ofc it takes a lot of commitment just like in professional sports. In example of that i can tell you guys you see on this video (at least on fx side) already got their master's degrees (taz for ex. a law degree) or were about to get them at that time.
I'm kind of surprised because you're not from the US and the culture of professional gaming has changed in most countries and is considered as if it were a sport. You don't understand the amount of dedication, preparation and time people put into games for such a small amount of around 75,000-125,000 a year. The average person doesn't either it's not something fake it's a lifestyle, passion and love for the game. It's an incredibly hard profession.
