    Looking good so far, by #1 tip would be to be careful of those power wires though! They unfortunately are prone to hitting the wires and injuring themselves. You planning on racing them in the future? It is a shame you're so far away otherwise I'd hook you up with some more reds ;)

    Your best best would be to build your team around the 3time winning bird and use most of the other pairs just to incubate and raise his chicks..that way you will end up with a team of great birds

    Pine Needles Green or Dry are excellent for pigeon nesting material it deters mites and keeps insects out of the nest as well as holds heat better.

    as some has said be careful with power lines. sometimes they run right into them so pick a spot with no lines around. also if you dont already check in on getting some grit for your birds. itll make them prettier and healthier. also helps hens get calcium if you get the all in ones. small investment of 40 or so bucks. worth a try but im sure once you do it you'll like it.

    I used to fly birds in MN, started out catching wild ones as a boy. The whitish nob above the beak is called the waddle by almost all fanciers and it grows bigger as the bird ages especially in cocks. Theres different names for the red colored birds but generally referred to as silver bars or mealy with the solid pattern being the most dominant in all colors of pigeons.

    There is a product called Muck Away that might help. Then the best thing to get is good aquatic plants that will filter the water.

    Don't forget to add about a 1\3 of a syringe of Equimax it's a Dewormer for horses but 1\3 of syringe into a gallon jug fill quarter of the way with hot water until it's all dissolved then top off with cold water serve to pigeons for 3-5 days get rid of all the worms they may have

    Use to be pigeon fancier in Northern Wisconsin, red bar is know as a silver, and the spotted white/ black looking are know as grizzles. Breeds could be imbrecks, Jansen, or Fabre's. The white thing on top of the beak is called a waddle

    If you are looking to clean up your pond without buying expensive mechanical filters then you need aquatic plants. Slowly but surely aquatic plants will clean up and oxygenate the water. Popular pond plants like lilies and water hyacinth are great but with all that fertilizer(poop) they are likely to take over the pond and you may have to do extra work clearing out the plants. So the other option is you could look into growing native aquatic plants like cattails and arrowheads which should be great for the water, turtles, and other wildlife. I hope this helps. Great channel and love the pigeons!

    A really important tip is that when u take them out 1 mile and then another say u take them 5 miles out and then they take a long time to return and maybe some don’t return together but return then you have to do the same distance that they had difficulty’s on so you don’t loose them

    Dude those pigeons look amazing! You got some pearl eyed ones. You gotta breed them to test their youngsters homing instinct. 2008 ain't that old, as long as they produce. I know a fancier who still breed 2002 to 2004 birds and can still produce healthy youngs. Those pigeons can live upto 20+ years aslong as they are fed good.

    • @Johnny-WaIker
      @Johnny-WaIker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      P.S. IMO, if you wanna force pair that 3x champ, it's fine too. Pair him up with a nice hen you think is best for him (but you need a small cage just for them both alone to make sure it's him who inpregnated the hen) or just let the champ decide. Can't waith for their youngsters fly around. Goodluck :)

    I certainly wouldn't be releasing so near to power wires, as when released they normally circle a couple of times to get height.

  • @9595duncan
    @9595duncan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can get freshwater muscles from fishing game they have fisheries that produce them and put them in your pond you just seed them out there just throw them out and they will filter the water and then getting something like ducks that will stir up the mud so that the muscles can filter that as well will help even more.

  • @WinfortLofts
    @WinfortLofts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Definitely gotta watch it letting them up under the wires like that, can certainly mess them up as @Adam Archer mentions!
    Also if they have been flying out for over a month now they should be out ranging on there own! When doing this, they would normally be heading out around 5 miles or so themselves! personally I don't let up at less than 3 miles as a first training toss!
    In the UK we call the colours the following:
    Red Bars = Mealy's
    Whites with black/grey bits = Grizzles
    As for the white bit on the top of the beak, in the UK we call it a "Wattle"
    Good luck!!

    Regarding the pond, fill her with plants! Floating plants and fast growing trees
    The plants will aid in the nitrogen cycle and use up the nutrients put off by the waste. It’ll take alooooot of vegetation, but the pond should start clearing up pretty quickly

    I try to keep up on the videos but might have missed it. How are his breedings going? I’ve raced for a long time in Texas and would like to hear more about him. I remember you trimmed him for breeding. If he’s truly 3x 650 mile he’s a Stud. I would isolate him if you haven’t with only the best hens you have. Loft breeding is sketchy, hens roam sometimes.

    You need an aerator for one. Second, barley hay bales work well, put new ones in every 3 month or decayed away depending on size. The best is a up light but probably not feasible. Adding blue dye which is harmless helps keep the light from penetrating as deep so it doesn’t grow as well. Some ideas…

Seeing all the dust fly around and such a young immune system. The open air pens are fine, but that barn attic can hold a lot of unseen bird droppings that can accumulate. Maybe you don’t already….

    Look great mate, just one bit of advice, any pigeon fanciers will tell you this, when you release them don’t release them near over head wires, they have a tendency to come flying out the box and smash into them, they can get killed or pick up some real bad injuries

  • @JR-13

    Nice birds! Make sure you take all the non racers out of that half of the loft so there's no mixed breeds. Don't waste time.... get some nest bowls in the loft to get some young birds. If i was you I'd get that champion cock bird and pair it with a nice red hen. Put them in a breeding box.. you need to pair him up in a smaller cage with a nest bowl in it.

      It is a lifestyle, having pigeons. if you want to travel, or party, not the lifestyle for you. the only traveling you will be doing is to the starting point of pigeon races. alot of driving, training, you are basically their coach.

    Make some nest boxes and keep it just as is. Any bigger or higher you wont be able to catch them. let them pair themselves up . hope there still fertile.

    Looks like you scored some nice birds. The old cock has years of breeding left in him. Try pairing with a young hen. Do you have a trap on the homer loft? It really helps . When the birds return from a training toss they can get in and stay in. Also helps keep predators out. I vote do not eat the turtle. Let him go, probably 30 years old . As for the manure lagoon, plant some marginal bog plants and throw in as much water hyacinth as you can buy. It will grow until it freezes and will cover the pond , using up a lot of ammonia and nitrogen from the water. You could always take it off before winter and toss it in the field.

    It’s called a “CERE” and a bright white one indicates good blood flow, some refer to them as the wattles of the pigeon but it’s a cere. Really good conditioned healthy pigeons have a white with skin colored sides.. most assume all white chalky is best but not ideally. That grizzle is a “tortoise shell” and red bars are referred to as ash reds or “mealys” if any ash red (checks or bars show black flecks, in the tail and wings, it’s a cock)
