- Katamari Damacy is perhaps my favorite game of all time. It's fun, funny, and just a plain 'ole good time. But does its direct sequel hold up to one of the most imaginative games ever made?

I just played Reroll and loved it, I'm really looking forward to the remake of the second
Funnily enough, everything that anyone has to say about preferring the original over this one for the most part is addressed in Royal Reverie. There are (I think) going to be more story structure based levels where you actually get to play as The King in us early years, the soundtrack is expanded upon with songs from other Katamari games, and even the somehow missing Eternal Mode returns. This is all very surprising and delightful for me because Katamari Damacy Reroll pretty much didn’t even add in anything, and yet this game does. I can’t say I blame them though since the variety is definitely We Love’s strongest aspect, and I’d even say that it’s a better game even with biases aside since there’s more reasons to keep replaying it over and over again with more clear satisfactory progression for collectibles. I also say "even with biases aside" because this is one of if not *the* first video games I remember myself ever playing. It probably wasn’t my actual first, but it was the first to keep my long lasting impressions for it. I was aware if the prior game’s existence, but back then most people had absolutely no idea just how much more different it was. (This was still around the time before information about games on the internet was a rare thing to come across in a reliable way other than very basic stuff, and when giant paid booklet paper guides we’re still in full swing, that’s how I actually got my attention still for games as far as LittleBigPlanet 1) Needless to say, this game is very close to my heart, so to know that more things are added to it at all for Royal Reverie is a rare opportunity for me to feel genuine happiness inside. This game deserves all the love it gets, and shouldn’t be overlooked just because it’s "yet another pointless sequel"… (Which is still wrong by the way, because I think Me & My and Forever are also good games even if they don’t quite reach the same heights. I appreciate the attempts to change and add to the formula though, I just wish they were done a little bit better since some of its magic got lost somewhere. It’s hard to explain, I dunno… good games though. And I hope if they make any more they can do better than We Love if that’s even possible)
It might not be a masterpiece that Keita Takahashi expected or even wanted to make, but it was still a masterpiece that he *did* make nonetheless.
I was so happy to hear We Love Katamari Reroll has new songs as DLC. Sure it's not included in the base game, but as long as we get Lonely Rolling Star, I'll be hyped. We Love Katamari Reroll is going to be the best in the series hands down; absolutely cannot wait.
It's me in the future. Royal Reverie-Reroll came out and it's pretty bad. Aside from the issues with view distance, the new levels are short and add little, you don't even get a planet with it (or a ranking I think?), eternal mode sucks because the game wasn't designed for it (feels like a chore to play). Ultimately, We Love Katamari is still a kind of trash game. Also I'm not paying $10-$20 for more music (and a costume) when I can just play a youtube video while keeping the sound effects on.

I grew up playing We Love Katamari and this was a great nostalgic trip. One of my favorite games of all time, thank you for this!
When it comes to Katamari, I absolutely do NOT need them to reinvent the wheel.
The core gameplay loop is so much fun that they could just keep making new DLC level packs every couple of months, and I would still have an absolute blast with it. Like, just endless new levels with new stuff to roll up in new areas.
I don't agree that a sequel "isn't necessary". That's like saying you shouldn't eat ice cream more than once and just enjoy the first time because you gotta live in the moment.
If a game is fun enough, it doesn't need to justify its own existence.
I’m really happy Takahashi made We Love Katamari despite not wanting to; it’s such a great improvement in every area the original lacking. There’s a reason it’s widely considered the best in the series.
I played through Katamari Forever a few years back and I didn’t end up liking it as much. The jump button felt unnecessary and didn’t add to the core gameplay loop at all. The purity of the first two game really can’t be replicated.
I can't believe this review doesn't have more than a few hundred views, considering its quality is so high and We Love Katamari content is so lacking. I played the game a month or two ago and absolutely loved it. Great job on this!!

I grew up Playing Katamari Forever on PS3, that game got me into liking the Katamari series, I did eventually get Katamari Damacy Reroll and I enjoyed it. I’ve recently started playing We Love Katamari Reroll and I find it even better than the first game, I like replaying levels to find missing cousins and presents.
I’m really enjoying We Love Katamari Reroll. It’s a great remaster and I’m glad you’re having fun!

First, I must say that the video is very well written and well edited again !
I think it's a pity that they didn't bring some new features of this one to Reroll like the list of objects when you pause, the possibility to play as cousins or the possibility to restart a level without going through the menu again.
However, there are some things that I like best in Damacy, like for example the collection tells us our total percentage in Damacy, I really don't understand why there is no percentage in We Love. The search for cousins too, there is one per level (two for the twins' level, logic :p) in Damacy while in We Love it was a mess where there were sometimes 3, sometimes 0, some appearing only after we caught others... almost impossible without a guide, it's even more frustrating as they are essential to unlock all the levels. And the last level with the roses ... well, you've said enough about that haha
I find the first game more mastered, but this one is indeed the perfect sequel that could have been made as you explained it so well ! The game really leaves this feeling of being like a big bonus for the fans of the first one, like us. The two complement each other perfectly.
I remember that I particularly loved the racing level too, and the level of the Gingerbread House !

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I definitely agree with what you said, but I'm also kinda glad Reroll was kept faithful to the original game.
I'm really hoping We Love Katamari Reroll gets made at some point. I think Katamari Damacy Reroll sold fairly well, and I also find it odd that game just released on other consoles two years after the Switch release. Makes me think more Katamari is coming at some point.

Not enough love for the final Vita title. People complained about its restrictions, but didn't put enough thought into how the simpler control scheme, the ability to stretch the katamari thin or thick, or the new jump and instant 180 turn were genuine evolution to the formula.
That’s one I have still yet to play, but I’d like to give it a go if I ever get the chance. Doesn’t help that it’s restricted to the Vita though

I remember watching the Game Grumps' playthrough of Damacy a few tears ago, and eventually bought reroll for myself in I think 2020. I absolutely loved it! I even bought it for a friend during this year's new year sale, which is something I never do. I don't have a good enough pc to emulate the second game so I've been waiting and hoping for a remake ever since then, so happy it's finally happening!
I promise you it will be worth the wait. We Love Katamari is a masterpiece.

The PS3 game has levels from other Katamari games. It’s kind of like a “best of” collection of stages.

Some critics consider Damacy one of the best games ever made and for good reason. The progression, emotion(Walking on a Star is an amazing track), soundtrack and sense of accomplishment(listen to Lovely Angel) are unmatched to this day, specially now with Reroll allowing co-op play.

Brotherdude is that standard component/composite feed? PS2 look terrible on large HDTVs but there are adapters like the Kaico PS2 HDMI that’ll make the PS2 look pretty dang crisp on them

I’ll definitely keep a Katamari Forever review in mind; there’s a lot of games I want to cover and I don’t make videos often. I did play it last year and I enjoyed it, but I think I still prefer the first two. I really liked the art style and a lot of the music, but I felt the jump mechanic was a bit unnecessary. Levels were generally well designed and I loved the returning stages.
@@smashingsalmon My thoughts on it would be that K Forever has the most staggering amount of content. Along with the upgrades to the graphics and choices thereof, it's the best possible evolution of the series so far. I feel like I play it alot more than We Love Katamari, but the crux of the matter is WLK still so gosh darn good that I would have the worst time deciding which game to recommend to newcomers. WLK has the sheer original Katamari charm intact that makes it an unforgettable classic. I would call that the best. KF however is the best game if you're just comparing sheer content overall. It's almost like what you said, Damacy and WLK are two sides of the same coin. I guess for me on the other hand, it's just WLK and KF. Damacy was unfortunately not in my life until many years later.
I would first like to start out by saying I just stumbled upon this video today, and love your review.
Personally for me while I haven't played Katamari Damacy, I have played We ❤️ Katamari.
And for me personally, I prefer We ❤️ Katamari over what I've heard and seen of Damacy.
While Damacy focused on a more linear path of progression, and to an extent that isn't bad, I'd much rather prefer We ❤️ Katamari for it's ever changing selection of tasks.
Especially when that something is as crazy as rolling up the sun with the Earth and other planets that you make.
Just the sheer ridiculous variety of what you're supposed to do with the Katamari makes the game that much more enjoyable.
I'm also more of a fan of the upbeat and lively nature of the music in We ❤️ Katamari.
I've listened to both soundtracks and can say that while there are many interesting tracks in Damacy, only a few grab my attention whereas in We ❤️ Katamari, almost all the tracks I enjoy and love and they're nice and uplifting and upbeat.
So now I'd like to pose this question to you.
If you played Damacy after We ❤️, would you still enjoy it the same way you do or with the more varied nature of We ❤️ stick with you more?
Personally I don't think I will like Damacy as much as I like We ❤️, it will be interesting to see how I look at the two games after.

It’s hard for me to say which game I’d enjoy more if I had played We Love Katamari first. I do think the original Katamari feels more barebones in comparison, but I really like the structure of the game. The credits sequence is also incredible and left me feeling way more satisfied than We Love Katamari’s ending.
But We Love Katamari has way more replay value and variety. It also just feels better to play, so I kinda go back and forth between which one I prefer.
Both games are incredible experiences and coexist really well. I do tend to play the first game more, but that’s mainly because I have it on Switch which is more convenient than setting up my PS2. If We Love Katamari comes to Switch, I’d probably play that more.
If i had played We Love Katamari first and then Katamari Damacy, I would have been disappointed that a lot of features were spoiled to me by playing the inferior game first. A lot of people are in denial about how bad We Love Katamari is

I played Katamari Forever a few months back and it was pretty alright. Def not as good as the first two, but it was solid overall. Not a big fan of the jump button though; it didn’t really serve much purpose.
Don’t know if I’m gonna make a video on it because I needed to stream the game through my free trial of PlayStation Now, but maybe sometime in the future.
