    Hi Craig, I have learned a lot from your videos and what you are doing is fantastic and oh so needed!! --- but here is a question I was wondering if you could answer. Soon I’ll be buying a MacBook Pro. I need 2 or 3 external SSD drives for use with orchestral sample libraries. Sometimes 100 tracks that are reading and processing all kinds of patches. What is the recommended minimum read and write speed for an SSD using these libraries? Any help is appreciated - thank you!!

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar with so I can't answer the exact question, but I have seen most tasks, even 4K editing with higher codec, done on external SSDS with read and write speeds at 800 MB/s or faster. So I don't think you need 2,800 MB/s but it helps if you can afford those 40 Gbps enclosures. You also then need to deal with higher heat loads and need to cool the devices better.

    Thanks so much. got a SSD from your advcice. it is flying this thing. sooo fast.. may i ask your expert advice on external HD docking stations? i ran through 6 of them in the past. they break fast. Tech repair guys use them often. i sit on 80 HDs or so, and found such docking stations to be the most practical. But am at a loss with speed and quality .

      @@craigneidel external Docking stations, but for internal drives. the one that lasted the longest is an exotic brand. usually they are dual or single docking stations. i am not allowed to paste a link here. so i am not sure how to direct you to this hardware. maybe you can google search this model number ,... dual docking station Highpoint RocketStor 5522 ThunderboltTM 40Gb/s , is what i am flirting with to buy . but it is incredibly hard to find a seller in Europe. many other brands do these dual docking stations. failure rate and rate of destroying a HD when using it is from 50% to 75 % when using with other more common known brands, i found. Many People have dozens of such internal Drives these days. This is a very convenient way to access the naked not encase drives. i use a spotlight index for all drives created by Diskcatalogmaker. Ancient software , used to come with TOAST. it still does the very best job, when searching for files which are not on a drive that is booted up yet. with a diskcatalogmaker result, then you look for that specifc drive you found the file on, and stick it/plug it into that dual station, and thats it. no usb cables, not plugin power cables, like booting up an encased HD. ...and sooo much cheaper .

    That small size would go great with an iPhone on the go. Ah, but the Amazon description says: "Universal Compatibility: Support Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android." That notably leaves out iOS. One reviewer does say it works via a USB-Lightning dongle: " I also love that I can use this little guy with my iphone 13 (you just need an additional dongle as this SSD comes with type C to USB and USB to USB, which do not function for iphones)." My question would be whether is needs external power to that dongle or can run off the iPhone. Some accessories do. Some do not.

      I have done tests at 10 and 50 GB on this and they seem pretty consistent. On my more recent SSD tests I'm now doing larger data transfer tests but for this one it performs fairly well but can slow down on huge transfer of over 100 GB etc. But for what you get in the size and cost, not a bad deal.
