IMPROVE LONG JUMP (AND SPRINTING) WITHOUT A PIT

  • I take you a long to the first face to face session I did with long jumper Sarah during lock-down. Just a few tracks are opening in the UK and this one was nearest enough to get too. It was great to be able to train more or less properly again - although there are of course COVID restrictions to follow. Our governing body for example requires coaches to only coach one athlete at a time and that sand pits can't be used. (That's an interesting point as at this track children from the families of parents running around the track were freely playing in the sand).
    Back to the workout. It is one that will suit jumpers and sprinters. As usual it follow my stacked unit approach to sessions. So, first up we have (after warm-up) "Basic Drills" - for example, marching and lunges, we then progressed onto a more dynamic unit with the emphasis on hip power and sprint technique. You'll see that for some of these drills Sarah had a hands on her hips. This is so that she could really focus on the mechanics of the leg movement. Then we moved onto some progression runs over 60m - these again can a mental focus point if using the hips to try to create greater heel recovery. Now, this did throw Sarah's rhythm out a little but the hope is that greater power will develop through the hips as a result.
    Then we progressed to take-off work (the learning technique without sand). A lot can actually be done in that respect - you can do these drills on any flat surface if you don't yet have access to a track.
    The drills included - take-off with 1-step between landing on the free (swing) leg and then with 3 steps between. We worked bot left and right legs so gain a balance of development here. Then we tried to replicate the movement into the drive phase of the hitch and hitch-hand techniques. Sarah is a hitch-kick jumper. The first was done at walking pace and the second with three steps in between and to be honest the drill workout better than I thought. Sarah initially adapted it herself without thinking and we worked and progressed around that. As with all the drill 3-4 reps were performed of each. You'll see more specific reps and distances on screen during the video.

    How can I improve my height off the jump and how can I improve my penultimate step as a right leg jumper?
