In Prince of Egypt, Moses was played by Val Kilmer.
In this movie, he was played by Christian Bale.
I wonder if in the next Exodus movie, he will be played by Ben Affleck.

Its so odd. When there's a movie about Zeus or Thor everyone recognizes the fictional nature of those magical stories. Yet so many people even right here in this comment section assert that these magical christian stories are real. It would be comical if it wasn't so sad. Our species needs to grow up.
As for this movie, as long as its written, directed and acted well then I'll enjoy it as much as any other well done piece of entertainment because I can distinguish between fantasy and reality.

    • @guitargeekette
      @guitargeekette 10 ปีที่แล้ว +30

You make an interesting point. Maybe really think about what you just said. It actually means quite a bit. Why is it that mythology is accepted and treated as just that...mythology, by most everyone, yet religion is seen as a totally different thing; not by just a few ppl either but quite a large number of people...
Since you used Christianity...you obviously don't believe in it, but perchance there is the existence of a REAL God that makes so many to this day, believe. If the other mythological characters were real or had an ongoing real presence, there could have still been a large following for them...but there isn't because they're not. Religion is still alive and kicking though...and in today's age of information, logic and the attempt of explaining absolutely everything, large groups of people still believe in a higher being/God and that doesn't seem to be going away no matter how much information/philosophies we are exposed to. You see NO reason for that, except that all these ppl are barbaric idiots buying into a fairy tale?
Just something to think about, since you brought it up.

stiimuli All of what you've said tho still doesn't address the "odd part" - why religion is still so adhered to when mythology isn't...
You named it as simply a double standard. What caused that double standard? Why is it there is no significant following for, say...Zeus or whatever? Why has everyone just disregarded those characters but not God?
As for the varying denominations and religions, yeah, clearly there are many interpretations of what ppl think is going on but one thing is common among them...there is a supernatural being.
Like I said, it was just something to think about.

    • @stiimuli
      @stiimuli 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      guitargeekette
You mean why *some* religions/mythologies are still adhered to while others aren't any more. Again, I think tradition has a lot to do with that as well as which religions were chosen and pushed by those in power through the centuries. Not to mention the particular incentives and threats used by each religion.
As for differing interpretations (and different religions), doesn't it also seem odd that a powerful god that could create universes would be so poor a communicator as to leave its message to its "children" so ambiguous as to cause widespread disagreement among them and so unconvincing as to leave many others entirely unconvinced of its very existence?
It seems much more likely to me that these differing religious beliefs are simply holdovers from times when humanity understood next to nothing about the world around them and conjured compelling magical tales both to satisfy ignorance and to calm common fears. These beliefs continually splinter and diverge because the entire system is based on personal belief and faith rather than anything concrete that can be used to gauge which belief is right and which is not.

Ancient Egyptians were indeed black. it's very well documented. however due to the migration of romans and arabs from the middle east through generations, modern Egyptians are black and arab or a mix of both. and thats why some of the most exotic looking people are egyptian, because they contain both black and arab ancestry. hence the sandy colored skin and uniquely colored eyes for some. The arab aspect of Egypt was due to migration, where-areas black Egyptians had always been there. just as european ancestors migrated to america which was already occupied by native americans.

If you are Egyptian then you have failed your people. Christian Bale as Moses, and other Caucasians as the Egyptians, is basically "white thievery" (as per your own racist ignorant phrasing). Semites of the 4th millennia BC would certainly NOT have been Caucasian, or even Caucasian mixed. This is not Egypt after the Greek conquest, so the Pharaohs would not be of the Greek Ptolemaic line. The Egyptians of the Exodus era were Hamitic descendants, just like the Cushites, Midianites, and other people of that region. But anyhow, Ridley Scott is an atheist and, thus, he doesn't care about realism because it's all fictional to him.

It depends. In Luxor and Aswan, people aren't even ethnically Egyptian, but Nubian. People around Qena and Al Minya are mixed. Some more than others. People from northern Delta and the Mediterranean coast (like me) are pure Egyptian and have pure Coptic blood (muslims AND christian). There is minimal foreign ancestry in us. That's why we have lighter skin than the mixed southerners.

Both my parents are Coptic from Al-Minya. But seriously dude, how do you know you for sure you are not mixed? There were Nubians that existed along the Mediterranean coast. You might be mixed but the Caucasian element is just more dominant. The phenotype(skin color) alone is not always a accurate predictor for the genotype. Even some American whites blonde hair blue eyes people have some Sub-Saharan African genes.

According to the Book of Exodus, Moses was born in a time when his people, the Israelites, an enslaved minority, were increasing in population and, as a result, the Egyptian Pharaoh worried that they might ally themselves with Egypt's enemies. Moses mother, Jochebed, secretly hid him when the Pharaoh ordered all newborn Hebrew boys to be killed in order to reduce the population of the Israelites. Through the Pharaoh's daughter (identified as Queen Bithia in the Midrash), the child was adopted as a foundling from the Nile river and grew up with the Egyptian royal family

Ridley Scott never fails :) I don't look at this as a religious movie and there is too much controversy over wrong issues. Although the story is still vague and mysterious to archeologists and historians it is a great material for a movie. The portrayal of characters and brotherly love that turns into a deadly duel is staggering in this story.
Moses got a more humane touch here. Most people imagine him as a ruthless avenger and a barbaric brute. The Ramses character is of the greatest interest to me. He seems quite sane and likeable as an unexperienced young leader only to lose his mind and turn into a dictator when he loses his grasp over the empire. In many ways this movie is a masterpiece.

People in the comments are so ignorant, and I'm starting to think modern day Egyptians are delusional. This all stems from the unfortunate idea that all black people look the same. Yes, Egyptians now definitely look more caucasian due to migration and changes over time. But there's no denying Ancient Egyptians had a large variety of appearances. They weren't all black. but they also weren't all olive skinned. You can see this in their own artwork and in writings. Nubians are a group of people in ancient egypt that are often depicted and they are consistently described as being extremely dark in complexion. Ancient Egypt spanned over many generations and their artwork depicts them as looking more black or more semitic closer to the first century and depending on the dynasty of the time. But there's no mistaking that none of them were European looking in the slightest. Even Cleopatra, while not black was Greek of the ptolemy group. Greeks were also not white by todays standards. Greeks admired blond hair and blue eyes which were rare features among their people and they depicted their gods as having these features, but they actually didn't look like that and any historian will tell you that. All reconstructions and sculptures of Nefertiti show her to look what like what would considered to be black in America today. I would compare her features to somalians or the model Iman, definitely not a European looking woman in the slightest. The truth is that middle eastern/egyptian people love to seperate themselves from blacks but there's a very fine line between the races in some regions and at the end of the day they weren't treated much better by Europeans. You are all inhabitants of the same continent and the truth is that some mixing happened over time because intersectionality often exists in race. You can be white hispanic, or black hispanic but if you're light skinned and you're from mexico it doesn't make you european. We see this intersectionality a lot in places like Brazil and the West Indies, where we have people who look Indian but are very much mixed with blacks and the West Africans slaves that were bought over by colonizers at the time. Even if we keep all the race things aside, this movie is still a mess since it's a biblical story. Moses's wife was described in the Bible as being a very dark woman, so much so that Miriam did not like her. For that God cursed her with leprosy and Moses had to pray for her forgiveness. So, it's not only historically innacurate but it also whitewashes the story it's based on. I mean honestly, Christian Bale as Moses? He's English. He does not have origins anywhere near Africa and he is not olive in complexion in the slightest. Same goes for pretty much for the rest of this cast. It's entirely made up of british and european people. You wouldn't make a movie about medieval europe with an all middle eastern cast so why would you do this with a movie about Ancient Egypt and the hebrew population. See Prince of Egypt for a better depiction. That film shows the range of black and browm people that would have been a more accurate depiction.

Glisean most of your post is good, but you are being petty and obviously do not understand film casting. You complain about Bale as Moses and that is petty. It's like when some Mexicans complained about a Spanish actgor, Oscar Jaenada, as the Mexican actor/comedian Cantinflas (Around the World in 80 Days), they were being petty. And now I suppose some petty Iranians are now complaining about Gael Garcia Bernal playing an Iranian journalist!!!

Glisean ''The truth is that middle eastern/egyptian people love to seperate themselves from blacks '''
      Well its clearly the opposites.
Nubians and upper Egyptians were extremely close and always depicted themselve almost the same. Both groups share the naqada predynastic culture, both group considered themselve originated from the land of punt. Both groups have the same god entities. Both are from the same Nile river.
The hyksos who invaded lower Egypt from the middle east were called ''Foreign rulers'' And were expelled from Egypt wit the help of nubians. When I say nubians in this case I'm talking about Lower nubia(Aswan Region in moderne day)
Upper Nubia is more the land of Kush but are still nubians. The line between those cousins groups.Upper Nubia(Kush), Lower Nubia(Medjay) always part of Egypt, Upper Egypt(Where ancient and midlle kingdom are from nubia) and Lower Egypt who got conquered by people from the south but also share the same cultures.
My next question is simple.Wwhat is the skin color of black people?? that goes from dark brown/Black to light beige.
This is the type of skin color that represent people all long the Nile from Ethiopia to lower Egypt and lack people in general.
Ancient Egyptians clearly separate themselves from the asian(Middle eastern) people. I'm pretty sure you know

Things the movie got wrong that I can tell by the trailer:
    1. The waters are supposed to part, not disappear.
    2. Moses was raised with the Pharaoh as his grandfather, not brother.
    3. Moses' birth mom kept in touch w/ Moses' adopted mom (Pharaoh's daughter), who made sure Moses would be brought up knowing that he is a Jew.
    4. It was 210 years of slavery, not 400. 400 was the amount of years the Jews were away from the Promised Land, from when they left due to famine to when they finally returned after the long journey.
    5. Moses did not get into any sword fights, if I can recall.
    6. Again, the Jews did not draw their swords against the Egyptians.
    7. Also, they seem to portray Moses as a powerful warrior, which he was not. He was actually a peaceful man.

@@markdin2988 @Mark Din The British started calling that region the Middle East because it was halfway to the far East. Middle East is not an ethnic group it's a geographic designation,. Great effort was made to detach Egypt and Israel from Africa and describe it as the Middle East.
For most of you Christians it will not be a problem but you need to come to the realization that the Messiah was not named Jesus and he was a dark-skinned negro.
It has been a dedicated effort to hide the fact that the Bible is a black history book. You are confusing what you see today in the Middle East to what it was during the biblical era. The people in the state of Florida now are not the same people that were there 600 years ago. You go to Florida now you see people from all over the world. 600 years ago you might only see Seminole Indian children playing on the beach.
The same thing happened in what you call the Middle East. The holy land is in Africa. Israel is on the African Continental shelf.
The Jews in Israel now are not the biblical Hebrews. They are Europeans that converted to Judaism in 740 AD. Led by King Bulan the people of the Khazarian Kingdom converted to Judaism. Their Kingdom thrived between the Caspian and Black Sea. They have no genetic, archaeological, or historical connection to the biblical Hebrews. They just adopted the religion.
When General Titus destroyed Jerusalem the biblical Hebrews fled into West and South Africa. Other than the ones who were brought to the Western hemisphere as slaves you can find them living in Africa to this day.
You say the Messiah was probably dark. I say he was black like an Ethiopian. Actually Ethiopia is the only country in that region that has not had a change in demographics. The borders of Ethiopia were much further north during the biblical era.
There was no physical difference between the Biblical Hebrews, the Egyptians, and the Ethiopians. You could physically tell them apart only by their clothing and jewelry.
Pharaoh thought Moses was his grandson. He had no idea he was a Hebrew. The Pharaohs during Moses time were deep dark Negroes.
The Bible tells us the Shepherd girls at the well that Moses defended return home early that day and their father wanted to know how it is they came home so soon. They said an Egyptian helped us not a Jew or Hebrew. His language or even his sandals would have them think he was Egyptian.
Moses married an Ethiopian woman. King Solomon and Queen Sheba had a son who became the first Emperor of Ethiopia.
I hear a lot of you suggesting that the Hebrews were Olive colored. The only olives that I know of are red, black, and green. Red and green don't qualify as a skin color so we're only left with dark black.
Remember the Psalms of Solomon. I am dark and lovely. Dark as the tents of Kadar. The tents of Kadar are still black.
I understand your confusion because I was 20 years old before I realized the Egyptians were black. Every representation of them in American Media they were always represented as white people.
Pope Alexander the 6th commissioned a new portrait of the Messiah. Using his son Cesare Borgia as the new image of Christ. As America became more and more racist the Messiah started to look more and more Swedish.
Due to war and mass migration the demographics of Egypt and Israel have changed from the biblical era. Ethiopia is the only country able to stand against outside Invaders. Even Alexander the Great back down from the great Queen Candace and her mighty Ethiopian warriors armed with steel blades and fearless elephants.
The Bible had to be whitewashed in order to make it more palatable for Europeans. At the same time Europeans were exploiting African people and they could not claim themselves as Superior while worshiping a black God.
Fortunately, even the Vatican has acknowledged the whitewashing of the Messiah. You'll find in the Popes private chapel a deep dark black image of Miriam and the holy child. Black Madonna's are all over Europe and Russia but you won't find one in America.

I am going to be so happy when they start to represent Biblical characters as they were. People are mad about Black Annie, about the Black storm trooper in Star Wars but not about the inaccuracies in Biblical movies placed in Africa. Let's face it the English European Whites weren't there. Even Greeks weren't there. And although you may hate it even the Arabians were not there in the bountiful numbers they are today. For those of you who say blacks should not be in fairy tales made from Europe, I say Whites should not be in nonfiction epics based in Africa. And before the storm of idiot replies I expect to receive telling me that Egypt wasn't Black let me quote past Greek historians who were in Egypt after the year BC.
"Herodotus states in a few passages that the Egyptians were black/dark. According to most translations, Herodotus states that a Greek oracle was known to be from Egypt because she was "black", that the natives of the Nile region are "black with heat", and that Egyptians were "black skinned with woolly hair". Lucian observes an Egyptian boy and notices that he is not merely black, but has thick lips. Diodorus Siculus mentioned that the Aethiopians considered the Egyptians a colony. Appollodorus, a Greek, calls Egypt the country of the black footed ones."
These historians ought to know they were there and not the so called people who want to change history just to feel superior.

For those of you African Americans who are obsessed with ancient Egypt, you need to stop claiming history that doesn't belong to you!! Go learn about the great West African civilization! By saying "ancient Egyptians were not this or that" just shows the world how insecure and unappreciative you are about your history! Love your West African history and go learn about it. It's an embarrassment for the rest of us Africans because you guys are acting like Egypt was the only country in Africa that was civilized and we all it wasn't! The movie was very realistic and well produced. But a few key situations was not placed.1. Moses turned stick into a snake to show God power before God interfere. 2. Moses was a stutter due to an accident with coal when he was a baby. His older brother Aaron was his spokesman to the Egyptians.
    3. God created a giant fire pillar to detain the Egyptians while the Israelites crossed the Red Sea.
Other from that, the movie was beautiful from start to finish.

Moataz Lashine Egyptians were a basically a mixed race people, they had the blood of the Nubian's to the south and the middle easterns to the north and some European. If that is you in your picture, your ancestors probably migrated down from the middle east a long time ago. Your people did not originally come from that region.

Moataz Lashine I'm Egyptian too and I agree with Moataz :) Nubians are the most dark skinned of the Egyptians at the far south but they aren't like central or southrn african black. Mostly Egyptians are brown or slightly tanned caucasians. Anyway race wasn't of a big issue in those days.

The filmmakers were going to be called "racists" no matter what they did. As is, they're 'racists' for making the Egyptians white, not black. If they would've made them black, they would have been called "racists" for making the bad guys black. No way to win that one.
I just think it's pathetic when any group tries to find their relevance in ancient history. You are what you make of yourselves TODAY, and that has NOTHING to do with ancient history, or the movies for that matter. No one's "stealing" anything from you. No one cares that much about it, and besides -- it was never "yours" to begin with.

So why exactly is it the mummies they have genetically tested(which were painted on the walls as brown) showing to be sub-Saharan? Modern Egyptians are mostly white but they're mixed with East Asian, and sub-Saharan being minor.

In my opinion, its not really the best adaptation of the story of moses but it is an interesting take by making Moses a general. I think what they do on the eygptian side is actually quite good aside from the fact its trying to make the prince of egypt into gladiator/300. but i do agree with New Power, the 1998 animated version is worth more watching than this movie. if you want to see a new take on the story of moses go ahead and take a look.

Ha A in dealing with Ancient Civilizations you really should refrain from using White/Black/Brown to distinguish groups of people. These concepts are 16th century AD and cannot be applied anachronistically. Ancient Kemet was African people of many hues as it was a cross section of people that migrated to the Nile for sustainability.

Egyptians didn't migrate from the interior of Africa, their civilization was found on the Nile, and the Nile only, otherwise no point in them being there. Some of the people who migrated to Ancient Egyptian civilization may have happened to be black Africans. Besides, you're saying all ancient Egyptians are black, that's untrue, they were African, but not black, some were black, but not all.

I can't believe that's your one complaint. Ben Kingsley (the old guy convincing Moses to lead) isn't white and it looks like a lot of the actors on the Pharaoh's side aren't either. You do realize that in ancient times people did move around quite a bit right? Egypt is at the top of Africa near the Middle East (which is why Egypt becomes involved in their affairs in modern times) so white people could easily have been in Egypt and have come from the Mediterranean region.
