- In honor of Disney's 100th anniversary, I've decided to take on the challenge of bringing to you all a fully colorized version of Steamboat Willie. Not just to celebrate the birth of an iconic cartoon character, but also to express the love I have for the artistry of traditional animation. Gaining a newfound appreciation for the medium as I meticulously restore and colorize these hundred-year old drawings frame by frame. Enjoy!

NOT MADE FOR KIDS. MADE FOR ADULT AUDIENCES AND OLDER ANIMATION FANS.
For those of you worried about the red pants, you can relax, this was just a fun early color test for the teaser. A preview of the official colored version we're releasing can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/NszIeFh7YZk/w-d-xo.html
EDIT: Also, January 2024 is no longer an accurate release date. Pushed back to refine the animation as well as potentially submit to a couple film festivals.
Why? Pictures of him with red pants are public domain too. I mean the idea that very specific shades of color are off limits is silly already, but still in promotional art he's had red pants from nearly the beginning, just not in the shorts until they went color
@@Ringtail it looks like modern mickey
@@NikodAnimations These design elements come from promotional materials from the original Steamboat Willie. They are not specific to modern depictions of Mickey Mouse.
If he wore white gloves and had pink skin it would likely breach the copyright of newer depictions of the character, but it doesn't, so it's fine.
@@AnimationYTST And you're wrong, so please stop.
@@AnimationYTST The point, though, is that the colored version is public domain also because it was used in promotional materials the same year (1928). It's true that the modern design of Mickey is still under copyright, but this is not the modern design; it's the 1928 design.
The fact Disney still hasn't done this is quite surprising
They really should do a special series on Disney+ where they colorize a ton of their most popular black-and-white cartoons. It'd be fun for fans of the shorts and it might get younger audiences more interested in them. I know as a kid I never watched most old cartoons because of that, but I like them as an adult.
ok so 1, that was a clean ass transition into colour like DAMN and 2, this looks super good! you really deserve more views. you earned a new sub :)
That was Walt Disney Animation Studios' intro style! I knew it from the page flips!
Please don't use any bad words
@@tobejaison9781 ass and damn aren’t bad words, plus this isn’t youtube kids.
@@tobejaison9781 damn I didnt know it was bad, what a bloody shame. People are so shitty using swears
@@tobejaison9781i agree
Finally a POSITIVE idea to do with Steamboat Willie Mickey instead of just cringy shock horror humor.
On god bro, on god. People that do cringey humor is what they’re only good at.
Boohoohoo
Not really and there are horror ones that aren't cringey@@Nihl_017
There have been already like a lot ( mostly art related) of positive stream boat Willie Mickey and there are shock horror humor that isn't cringey
Oh yeah boohooo right. Yeah creativity. Boohoo. Lame am i right
Soon to be in public domain
He is now
@@09MrSlimenot for another 2h47 minutes lol
Lol
public domain, baby!
Ye
Surprisingly, now that the OG Mickey design is in the public domain, you can actually get away with this without getting a copyright claim by Disney.
This is great! :)
actually there is still the issue of trademarks with some of the specific colors used, as is my understanding
there's a colored poster released the same year with the red at least.@@bernebelmont1857
@@bernebelmont1857trademark only covers branding.
I think you'd be fine with the colors, while short itself was in black and white the promotional posters were in color.@@bernebelmont1857
@bernebelmont1857 You are correct. Mickey, in the colors shown in the video is not using the "steamboat Willie" design therefore Disney can still copyright this video
Finally someone who uses it in a good way
This is really cool
I'm looking forward to watching it in color
I fear the color choice, because it references a newer mickey, may not fall under public domain. Not that I don't wanna see it, this project sounds amazing. I'd love to see a finished product
The colors were used on promotional posters.

@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 1928
@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 yep search up steamboat willie should appear with the same color as its shown in the video
And there's a slight possibility that the other versions of Mickey might as well fall into the public domain since up to the latest version, every single Mickey Mouse is a derivative of the original Steamboat Willie, it would only take going to court to define this correctly
Was thinking about this. You did tremendous with the colors too!!
I'm so excited for your colourized version! Please upload it 1st January. Also, I subscribed.
THIS IS SO AWESOME! I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE FULL THING! THAT LOOKS SO COOL!
Looks fantastic!
Finally!!! Someone does it!!
it is now public domain
No
Great work, doc! SUBBED!
Incredible!
i love this so much
Just like the first level of the Mickey Mania game on the SNES/Genesis when the black and white background transitions to full color

WOW!!! 😮
I'm speechless.

This feels new!
That looks cool.
good colour choices!
ever since the public domain, everyone started going crazy with this
Considering the red pants were added later, this might be illegal depending on how good Disney's lawyers are (that is to say, very)
I'm not so sure, I've seen people posting some colored posters that are (reportedly) from 1928, which do depict Mickey with red pants, brown-ish yellow shoes and even his white gloves. Some have claimed that these depictions would also be part of the public domain and thus people wouldn't just be restricted to black-and-white colors, though I haven't really verified if those showcased posters are truly from 1928 yet. And the matter of how much of a factor these posters are in regards to copyright is still being discussed.
It may not be the original but it beats looking at memes of people make him evil.
Now it's in public domain everyone! Let's go!
About time!
YOOOOOO!!!! THAT TESER CAME OUT ON MY BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY IN 2023 BRO.
Just so you know, the red pants may still be a problem considering the public domain only implies to the early cartoons.
The 1928 posters already have Mickey's red shorts
Welp, I'm subscribing! Hitting that bell so as not to miss it!
Who else is here after the original cartoon became public domain?
Wonderful trailer 😊😊
Now this is something to look forward to regarding Steamboat Willie entering the public domain. Certainly beats the horror game I heard about.
Colorful
YES!
Es como viajar en el tiempo al ver esos colores tan bonitos❤
This better be good
WOW.
gorgeous
This looks amazing! I'm wondering if you used AI to upgrade the sound quality? Not that it needs it, but could be interesting in Stereo! Hah
I'm waiting!
Disney can't stop you now that it's January 1st.
Dew it.
You can finish it now cause it’s public domain!
Walt would be proud
First, it was made in 1928, now it was made in 1938!
Then it moved to 1948
This was uploaded on my birthday last year
Public domain boutta be this man's greatest weapon
This looks real
Steamboat is going to be in color
FINALLY
We getting the Gameboy color treatment with this one 🔥🔥🔥🗣️🗣️🗣️
cant imagine how Warner bros might feel if Tom and jerry or looney tunes enter public domain
And maybe even for some released Silly Symphonies only in black and white?

as the copyright comes down, you can finnaly do whatever you want with this iteration of the mouse

Where did you Colorize it?
Okay now allow comments to be enabled on all vintage cartoons.
I don’t think the first 8 seconds of that is public domain yet. Everything else is great, but I worry that Disney will still throw a copyright strike over those first few couple of frames.
Yo just in case disney tries to ban you, take out that uno reverse card about those posters that had color.
this is kool but something bout black and white is just kooler

Why flickering not fixed? Colors is beautiful.
