    Super Nintendo clones were around since long time. Starting with the oldschool "Super Pro System 16", that was a genuine hardware clone, moving onto 2000s with FC Twin, and so on including handhelds. The addon Super 8 was also available for the Super Nintendo, but it worked just like Super Gameboy - it was basically a NoaC connected into the console. You can do the same with genuine Super Nintendo then if you do find the right device.
    Although this one is much more compressed in terms of used electronics, its still NOT a system on a chip, like Famicom or Mega Drive was. This is probably why there werent many Super Nintendo clones around, and like you said - its still not perfect, lacking the RGB and stereo audio.
    Although it looks darn nice ! And if it has good compatibility, this is genuinely worth considering for younger retro fans, who didnt grew up in the 90s, to check up on the classics, if they missed them on Wii Virtual Console haha.
    PS. Yep. I still am a bigger fan of Mega Drive :P

      The Super FamiCom and SNES in all regions was trying to promote the use of A/V cables and S-Video cables for best possible image quality and full STEREO sound so if this clone only does mono sound output then that's a flaw with the clone NOT with the official Nintendo hardware especially considering that NEC PC-ENGINE Super CD-ROM2 was also promoting the use of A/V cables and the 1988 Sega MegaDrive and even the launch year 1989 Genesis was promoting (a bit weakly since you only had to read the system manual) the use of both A/V cables and RGB since 1988 and 1989...
      You cannot blame televisions because they too depend on the brand name and model where some televisions didn't bother to offer stereo sound or even more than ONE sound speaker because of being a lower priced model...
      I purchased a brand new RCA brand 27 inch CRT in 1992 which retailed for $250 to $300 at the store I worked at where I got the additional employee discount and with the launch 1991 SNES, every time I purchased a game in 1991 and early 1992 it kept telling you in the instruction manual that it was best to use the RCA or A/V cables for full stereo sound... on Sega I don't recall the same information other than supposedly being able to buy headphones or use separate speakers since Sega of America never bothered to really hype the A/V cables much less hype the stereo capabilities of the Sega Genesis around 1991 to 1992 when I purchased my own systems.
      Hey mark I have a question... you said this plays Sega MegaDrive Genesis games... can you put MD/Gen roms and even MIII/SMS roms in the standard SNES everdrive type Cartridges and play the games that way?
      What are the chances this also can handle NEC PC-Engine roms?
      might be worth trying out to know.

  • @KISSbestfan
    @KISSbestfan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    So to answer your question at around 17:12 - this is NOT a ROM cartridge. Its a Famicom packed inside the cartridge with built in games (havent you recognised the usual black blob :P ?), that has a flash memory with the games, and a couple of other chips to act like a passthrough. Similiar manner to Super Gameboy, that also has the hardware of the Gameboy inside. Treat it like the Super 8, but without the cart port.
    No surprise Mega Drive addon was available, since MDoaC is around since forever. You just need to "tell the console what button does what" :P
    In fact I remember one guy who used reverse engineering to do similiar stuff with the Nintendo Entertainment System, packing up the Raspberry Pi, and playing Super Nintendo on a Nintendo. Or at least thats how it looked like, maybe it was all a fraud. Who knows.

      @@KISSbestfan What confuses me is how it would work. NES clones are almost all based on the mostly accurate but not 100% accurate NOAC which like the NES stock hardware isn't capable of RGB, only RF and Composite. The SNES/SFC generates the video signal normally, but if this is a clone based cartridge, the it would be generating the video. So I wanna know if it's just passing through Composite through HDMI or if it really is RGB compatible with the real hardware.

    • @KISSbestfan
      @KISSbestfan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SatoshiMatrix1 the clone doesnt output RGB. It only outputs composite that additionally is upscaled into HDMI. The real one though has an option to output RGB, but also outputs the standart composite video. So it would act like a pass through. Super Game Boy also doesnt output RGB as far as Im aware

    • @SatoshiMatrix1
      @SatoshiMatrix1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KISSbestfan Right no. I suppose I wasn't clear enough. I know that this Super Famiclone itself doesn't produce RGB - it's either Composite or HDMI. It's the real hardware that supports RGB. Even with the Super GameBoy, the SNES drives the video output, making GameBoy games possible to display in RGB despite the GameBoy hardware itself not supporting that.
      So my question involving RGB was about the NES cart that comes with this clone specifically. The NES hardware normally can't produce RGB at all, even clones because they're all based on clones of the original hardware that also lacks that. But if the video feed isn't produced internally by the cartridge and again relies on the console, then it might be possible to get RGB from it. It all depends on how this cart works.
      That is again why I want to see it running on a real Super Famicom and not this clone. It should produce composite no matter what, but RGB is the question.

    I have this but never use it due to the sound being in mono only. I also have the handheld version of this console, which DOES have stereo sound through it's headphone jack. The front of the box, where it says "compatible with NES/GBC/Sega" is referring to the cartridge adapters for the handheld version, which also works on this console. They are not discontinued, you can buy them from Aliexpress. Just search for "Retroad 5 Plus". The Sega adapter works with Everdrives, but the NES/Famicom/GBC adapters do not. Also the included cartridge with the NES games has a Nintendo-on-a-chip under that black glob top, so that is why the console can play NES games. I'm assuming your Super Famicom is probably one of the later one-chip variants rather than a two-chip variant like my own, because the RGB output looks noticeably less blurry. In which case, this machine is probably emulating the two-chip design. Or it could just be lower quality output, which is more likely the case. But yeah, you're right about retro games in the states. Well, not across the board, but for Super Nintendo in particular they're quite high. That's why I got a Super Famicom shipped from Japan to replace my US SNES with a defective ppu, even with the shipping costs it was around $25, which is WAY cheaper than any SNES you'll find here. Same goes with NES vs Famicom cartridges, it's ridiculous how much cheaper the Japanese variants often are on ebay!

    Realistically, for $90 (w/shipping) you'd be better off buying a used SFC or SNES. The chipset of this is supposedly based on the FC Twin. The mono sound is also weird. Wasn't the Genesis/MD clone also mono only?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The MD was in mono but they fixed that issue with a later revision. I'm wondering if they'd do the same with this.
      The price is a valid point but it depends upon where you live. I got free shipping when I bought mine. It also a lot cheaper than a clean SFC here in Japan. Personally this console isn't for me as I'm very fussy about audio so that mono sound would be an instant deal breaker however I know many people who just wouldn't care.

    Isn't it insane how long it took for SFC clones to happen Ie. HDMI era, been drowning in Famiclones forever. ;) What are you talking about man, having short wide sprites is the best? ^_^ Fairly generous package with that 3rd controller. Odd Famicom solution, you'd think maybe a cart adaptor, wonder if the ROMs are customized.
    Totally, ROM dumping consoles feel so dumb since you might as well skip the whole cart part at that point. Compatibility isn't shocking with a hardware clone, emulation consoles ironically seem to have the most trouble with actual cart hardware, more reason to use Flash memory directly and downloaded ROMs lol.
    So weird, HDMI with mono, huh, were they working with a head injury there? O_o??? I used mono bitd plenty but stereo is always better. Not bad, couldn't fault anyone for buying one.

      you buy a PCB and put an 5v EPROM, or you take a crappy sports game and swap the Mask ROM for a 5v EPROM (you have to modify a couple of pins though since the Mask ROM has a slightly different pinout than typical EPROMs). The Genesis uses a 68000 CPU and the SNES uses a 65c816. They are very different chips. To run Genesis games on a SNES you would essentially need a cartridge that carries its own 68000. Also the Genesis has other differences in chips, like it uses a Yamaha FM synthesizer for audio where the SNES uses a sampler chip called the S-SMP (which was developed by Ken Kutaragi from Sony). Basically you would need to have all the Genesis chips in a cartridge (either originals or more likely integrated clones). On the upside, the Genesis uses mostly off-the-shelf chips, unlike the SNES which was far more custom.
