I have original hardware, but when it comes to playing games, I use my Analogue systems. They offer the absolute best way to play nes, snes, sega genesis, and other systems. Yeah they are a bit expensive but in my opinion they are easily worth the price. I much prefer fpga based systems over other options because they are compatible with almost every game and accessory, they look and sound so much better, and plus the analogue consoles sometimes come with a game or two built in.
I have original hardware here, but I almost always just use my Retron 5. It is just a lot easier to have that one system hooked up that covers a ton of different platforms. More time gaming, less time dealing with hooking up consoles/wiring. The emulation it does has been good enough for me, honestly very few issues at all. The trickiest part is the NES game slot being finicky, but I can usually get it working with a little patience.
I bought a yobo console at a thrift store for $5. It plays nes, snes, and genesis. It's really crummy, but I really like it because it's super fun. I play duck hunt on it with my 23" ge crt tv through a vcr. Super fun!
I'm still using the old silver Retron, thing won't die. Then again, most my NES play is done on one of those 620 in 1 mini decks. It literally has almost everything I liked, and better controllers, lol
I had RetroUSB AVS, which i later sold and bought HDMI modded Toploader NES, which was pretty good, and i traded that with the Flashcart to a Analogue NT Mini
That NT Mini is like $2000 - $2500 CAD off eBay these days. That's a big nopers for me. :P It's either a lid-less AVS + RetroTink4K on a smaller QD-OLED TV, or an RGBNes Multiout modded Top Loader, both paired with an EverDrive. The latter gives you the ability to also play on a CRT, so it's more versatile in the end.
I was unboxing my Retrobit Trip plus as you mentioned the 2 10ft wired controllers and that it only does 4:3 but I noticed there is a switch for either 4:3 or 16:9. Is this a newer version maybe or does the switch do nothing?
My favorite would have to be the Feihao HDMI Famicom handheld from Ali-Express. I use it on the TV most of the time and use my Famicom to NES Mayflash controller adapter and my NES Online controller. I think it's the best one I have ever found. I have a guy that makes me English games. It's about seventy bucks for two games shipped but it's worth it. I have Abbey's Des Morts and Syou Gate waiting at home if I ever get there. I think I will be buying Piopow for the Famicom next. I think he may need somebody to make his cartridges though. My guy couldn't keep up with what he needs. He made a Masterpiece it's going to be a thing for sure.
Just bought the nes classic mini system. The lag is awful. Did you experience that as well? Should we just return this and go with something different or is there a way to fix the lag? If we do go with another system, what do you recommend? And how do we go about getting the Japanese versions of games? Thanks so much!
Yeah it's been a long time my friend since I saw your review of The Gamerstek nes clone way back in 2017 along with the infamous HDMI to AV adapter that was the first I discovered you and since then each system is different than the last, of course the sound on each clone didn't change that part I agreed but compatibility is depending on what kinda game it is and over the years compatibility is different. On one hand for example older clone systems can't play Castlevania 3 do to the MMC5 chip and the new ones does play it but others like Battletoads suffer from the same issue at level 2 it's freeze something on the original Nes doesn't do that. So yeah definitely agree that the quality of each nes clone various to the controllers, video quality Etc, the only thing didn't change the audio of course.
Cool video. And cool shirt too. Whered you get it? I think when i get a raise at work this summer ill buy a retron 5. I love hyperkins controllers... time i give their consoles a try. Itd be a great way to start snes collecting. As much as i love the snes mini, i want to get the real deal some day. Retron 5 would be a start, and i can start collecting nes/famicom too.
What I am looking for is the Beach Hyperkin Supaboy to go with my Super Gameboy 2. I have my Retroad 5 Plus 7" HDMI handheld but it doesn't work with the Super Gameboy 2 for some reason. I use my GB/GBC Extension Converter though and that works fine. I want to play my Namco Gallery Vol.1 Mappy in Color and just can't find a good Blue System to match my cartridge. Has to be handheld.
I really loved my Retron 5. I used the ips. Patch program on Windows and only had to buy one cartridge for every system. I needed controllers but they were cheap enough. I think that's about the time I started Emulating. Haven't stopped yet. It's in my niece's hands now and I just told her about the program but I need to give her a PC so she can do it. I have an extra Acute Angle PC that I think she will love.
I do not have any clone systems. If I was going to get one I would get the retron 5 with an everdrive so I could use that instead of using my cartridges because some of those systems can be hard on original cartridges putting them in and pulling them out because some of the clone systems hold on to the cartridges really tightly.
@@amolochitis30 Both the sound and colour, apparently are janky, or can be. If neither were the case, and it had zero latency through it's Analogue out when paired with a CRT i would of picked one up. You're better off just getting a modded Multiout Top Loader NES for your CRT.
I had an NES back in 1991 then a SNES back in 93-95. My issue with getting an original NES is the reliability, will it work and for how long? Also using those RF cables or even an AV cable, not good. I bought an original Megadrive (Genesis) last year and the image quality was awful. It was great to play Sonic on original controllers though.

@@RoXolid i like it but i play it on flat screen crt though so i dont have the image issues or the sound issues you were having but it wasnt worth the 40 bucks they were asking for it as its imternals arent any different than any other chinese console except that done something to make it play cv 3 on other chinese consoles you could get those to play cv 3 by adding in a diode
@@RoXolid i don't have that game so not that important i just want a clone Nes system that reads my Nes games good because I hate messing with my frontloader Nes
I had the R5, both versions and both honestly are trash, just the v2 is a bit more durable trash. In the end they're trash because the pins or firmware/OS that it runs seems to in time decide not to like original NES if not other carts eventually and just fail to load legit media, and while the emulator is good it's not excellent. The perk was the ability to dump your games and game saves good for sharing data or swapping it back with a battery change out. I've got the FC Mobile88 FC handheld, that one short of the VRC6/7 and the neediest Sunsoft/Namco expanded mappers it runs stuff accurately is crazy given it's a cheapo handheld, highly recommended. I'm watching the video now, hoping something here does full Famicom support right as I have a honeybee, I'd get a clone NES if it didn't suck for once. I do have the FPGA you don't have, Analogues SNES and Genesis systems, also have a NES top loader with their same guy(kevtris) core on the hi def nes kit installed to it. It runs magnificently, better than any non-fpga clone has to date other than maybe that supaboy s. The systems are remarkable and durable, awesome on a flat panel, and I'm told with DAC equally good on a CRT too. And yes those systems like the AVS were also $200/ea. I've got the pocket too, it is the same, the dock is buggy beta garbage though as of this comment.
That color on the first system is just bad, blown out and shifted all kinds of wrong. From Kirby being overly yellowy to Mario and Piston Honda suffering from liver failure(jondas) it's not right. That is a deal breaker for me how off that is. The NES palette has a peach colored hue for one of the colors used commonly for skin tone or that color the kirby status bar has and it's utterly gone.
