I think this was a nicely done tribute. Way back in the day Joy Division opened up for The Cure in a small venue. That night should have been taped. Would love to be able to get that show on a DVD
I like it. Robert Smith has just enough anguish in his voice to convince me. It doesn't beat the original, but I don't think that's the intention. The further we get from Ian's passing, the more it's crystalised just what a GIANT he was in the world of music. This is another tribute.
to everyone saying "leave joy division alone" or "this is so much better than the original," this song and this performance... this is someone's fucking LIVELIHOOD we are talking about! this is a well-executed and heartfelt cover of an amazing song. why must we compare the performances and pick it apart?
So true! I can't help but see the similarities between the two bands. Joy Division is an extremely underrated band in terms of their legacy to inspire future musicians.
I love the vocals here and the emotion is there, they sound like they mean it. But the magic is still missing, and I don't think anyone will be able to pull that off. Ever.
You know, when one is depressed (as I am, a bit, tonight) this version is somehow the best thing ever. It's like the sluggishness speaks to the pain within. The Joy Division version, however, gets my vote most days. In that urgent, determined tempo, there's this stubborn, sublime hope present in that one that transcends pretty much any pop song ever written.
this is my most favourite song of all time, this version is beautiful i did not think anyone would be able to cover this well but The Cure have done it,brings tears to my eyes. And i know how the death of Ian Curtis affected Robert Smith so i'm sure he did this with love and respect. Be proud mr Smith.
I love Joy Division to the Ninth degree but ever since I heard this cover over a year ago, I still think it's actually better than the original ... however much the original is one of the best songs ever ... this cover is even better. Just my personal preference and not trying to convince others.
This is brilliant! From the first chord you can hear that it's the Cure. He's made a new song of it and still it's Joy Division and the best lovesong in the world.
It's kinda nice hearing the vocals on-key for once, but there's something about Ian's inability to be on pitch that's endearing, and this version lacks it.
Utterly untrue. The Cure & JD formed at the same time, but at the time JD sounded like a Buzzcocks tribute band while The Cure sounded, essentially, like The Cure right from the start.
It's nice to hear approval from someone who was around to see counter-culture before it was sold in shopping malls. Hopefully this kind of music will continue to inspire the next generation of punks, whatever that ends up being.
Triple J radio had a competition allowing to meet the band in Brisbane and the winner would also decide on a track the band would cover. All this led to the Cure covering Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart backstage in a caravan that day (with Sarah -competition winner- guesting on tambourine). There you go.
the cure are 1 of the best bands ive ever heard and this is a great cover of this tune and im a massive ian curtis fan im glad the cure did a cover 1 of the only bands whop could do this song well and do it justice
Really comes out in the song. Some people think depression is all doom and gloom but theirs a lot of optimism behind it. Depression doesn't usually manifest in you thinking the world is terrible, thats angst. It's more common to find people who think the world is so wonderful that THEY somehow don't live up to it, like everyone they know deserves better than what they can offer.
yep that is the one. I remember when I first came across it. I was amazed. I wish I could have been there though I wouldn't have been old enough to really enjoy it
Some say one the most important gigs in rock history, certainly in England. There are many factors which affected the birth of Joy Division and how the band was shaped. They are unique, but they have other artists and technicians to thank and to acknowledge.
Im a Cure fan, and I think that it wouldnt be The Cure without Joy Division. These kind of bands are the basement of the "alternative music"... and now they called it "indie". Just very nice music, so deep...
Most of people bitching about covers are probably playing this song at home and wish they were Ian... Covers are what they are, most of time a tribute, a homage and a way to show respect to inspiring people, or just friends. Robert Smith shared venues with Ian Curtis back in 79, and dedicated songs to Ian on stage after his dead. I'm sick at people who think they own joy division and think a song like LWTUA can't be covered. The Cure is legitimate more than any of us to play this song.
This was recorded in a backstage studio at the now defunct Livid festival in Brisbane, Australia in October 2000. It was part of a competition that triple J did. The listener had to suggest a cover for 3 bands (cure, dandy warhols, forget the 3rd) to perform and if the band liked the listeners choice the listener got to join in on the recording of the song. I actually watched this getting recorded. The listener played Tambourine. It was a great competition
ive heard alot of disastrous covers of this song and i think this is the best ive heard. great cover. plus the cat was funny... and the smackhead chihuahua.
This cover is done from pure respect, it's almost a spontaneous enterprise, it's not overproduced or sonically optimized, was not released to be a commercial hit. Smith obviously loves the material and sings it his own way- does that not define why a cover would be attempted in any terms?
Joy Division - Gods of music
The Cure - Gods of music
Love Will Tear Us Apart = Thank you Robert and crew for covering such a beautiful song
Absolutely 😊
Agreed
I think this was a nicely done tribute. Way back in the day Joy Division opened up for The Cure in a small venue. That night should have been taped. Would love to be able to get that show on a DVD
That would be phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. 🖤✨

I absolutely love this cover. Love both bands equally. Both Smith & Curtis are (were) genius. ;)
I have only discovered this now! 80s - the gift that keeps on giving!
So true! I can't help but see the similarities between the two bands. Joy Division is an extremely underrated band in terms of their legacy to inspire future musicians.
You are exactly right. I believe that only Ian could ever pull his songs off.
R.I.P Ian.
This is so super ultra awesome i'm exploding every second when i'm listening this!! My favourite band covering my other favourite band's song!
Mihpu same😍
Wow, I remember this... Great song, the lady with a tambourine won a radio contest and got to be this recording in Australia. Thanks for posting!
I love the vocals here and the emotion is there, they sound like they mean it. But the magic is still missing, and I don't think anyone will be able to pull that off. Ever.
This is one of their best songs ever! Brilliant cover!
Hahah... Love the random animals!! ^__^
Temazo❤
With earbuds in , this is a real trip.
Robert Smith has a very wide vocal range
THE BEST COVER EVER. Period. *Love you Ian & Robert! Always. *
i agree. i actually think the cure does a great job though.
You know, when one is depressed (as I am, a bit, tonight) this version is somehow the best thing ever. It's like the sluggishness speaks to the pain within.

two gods of the night - great - i dream of a "Decade" cover
Love Joy Division. Without Joy Division there could never be The Cure.
FANTASTIC ROBERT SMITH!!!
Brilliant cover, The Cure were an awesome band and Joy Division were simply amazing
adoooooooro!!!
this is my most favourite song of all time, this version is beautiful i did not think anyone would be able to cover this well but The Cure have done it,brings tears to my eyes. Derek Hunter Opinions but not even close!
And I love the Cure!
Ian Curtis might not be the greatest vocalist but that voice fits in to what music they make
Dare I say this is just as good or better than the original dear god this is absolutely brilliant Robert sounds amazing in this wow this is amazing.
For me, this cover perfectly describes the pain of the concept of love. I prefer Smith's style of singing better.
after hearing this cover it made me realise the cure are fantastic, and got me right into, what i can only describe as the best band on the planet.
Utterly untrue. The Cure & JD formed at the same time, but at the time JD sounded like a Buzzcocks tribute band while The Cure sounded, essentially, like The Cure right from the start.
Blackmilk81 Buzzcocks tribute band 😂😂😂😂😂 never heard so much shite!
one of the best covers ive ever heard for anything ever
Ian curtís se esta retorciendo en su tumba
No he is not Robert does any amazing job, only the Cure could cover this masterpiece.
just give me more of these rare covers, one of the best, not because of the artistic realization, more because of the feeling behind..
A beautiful cover by a phenomenal band. I love them both.
Absolute Brilliant Cover of a Brilliant Song . Well done the Cure..

It's nice to hear approval from someone who was around to see counter-culture before it was sold in shopping malls. Hopefully this kind of music will continue to inspire the next generation of punks, whatever that ends up being.
Interessting. I knew the cure covered it, and it`s the first time i`m hearing it.

this is cool. i didn't know this existed. glad i found it. i love joy division and the cure.
Awesome cover. There isn't mant in the world that would even try to go near this song. Curtis pretty much owns it for all time.
the cure are 1 of the best bands ive ever heard and this is a great cover of this tune and im a massive ian curtis fan im glad the cure did a cover 1 of the only bands whop could do this song well and do it justice
I always felt Joy Division and the Cure were two sides of the same dark coin, so I love this cover
I was just thinking a picture of a squirrel would make this song all the more enjoyable when that little fury mammal popped up. great vid.
Fantastic version.
Full song with full lyrics, but not full HD. Thank god for the music!
Really comes out in the song. Some people think depression is all doom and gloom but theirs a lot of optimism behind it.

I really like this verision. (Note to yjdsgds: Thanks for the "presents." I felt weird smiling during this song; but couldn't help it.)
Two bands I love, all wrapped up in one song. God that sounds so good. BeLIEve me, all Americans are not rude or arrogant.

I LOVE this sooo much- thanks for posting. It's like chocolate and peanut butter! Amazing and yummy!
Some say one the most important gigs in rock history, certainly in England. There are many factors which affected the birth of Joy Division and how the band was shaped. They are unique, but they have other artists and technicians to thank and to acknowledge.
Beautiful version. If only they could have worked together. Geniuses always leave us early, don't they?
Great clip. Thanks!
Im a Cure fan, and I think that it wouldnt be The Cure without Joy Division. These kind of bands are the basement of the "alternative music"... and now they called it "indie". Just very nice music, so deep...

No one can do a cover of this song properly. Even the beauty that is The Cure.
Random animals kick ass! The cover is so so.
