forever Buddy He just didn’t like how high her voice was. And her voice can sometimes sound a bit squeaky. But it all comes down to preference. Like to me, I much prefer SinB’s voice compared to Umji’s voice, but that’s just my opinion.

Glad I'm not the only one who think that Rough sounds like an awesome old school anime. First time I heard it, I immediately imagined Sailor Moon squad just flying and transforming everywhere! I grew up on that stuffs, and Rough really makes me feel nostalgic so I love it!
Also, these reactors are introduced into Kpop during the modern time when a lot of the new music is westernized with a lot of beats and bass and whatnot. Gfriend music is an ode to the old Kpop, before the hallyu wave really hits the west. I'm talking about Gee vs I Got a Boy, Hyuna Bubble Pop vs 4minute Hate, 2NE1 Lollipop vs I AM the Best, Bigbang HARU HARU vs Bang Bang Bang, etc. You'll understand my point if you're familiar with Kpop sound 10-11 years ago when TVXQ and Suju first debuted.

From the comments on this it sounded like the reactors were going to rip into this and disregard the music but they absolutely didn't. They are allowed to like or not like anything and none of their comments were offensive or out of line. Criticism of the music is allowed guys, this is why I hate fandom culture. Any less than positive comment on the music and the fans go rabid.

Bethany Marsh Exactly what I thought. They genuinely just gave their reactions to the MV and music - and it's not their style. They weren't saying Gfriend was bad, they just weren't feeling their vibe. They still acknowledged and commended the musical aspect of the songs they liked and disliked, which is what this channel set out to do. So I don't get why some people be mad. 😕 It's one thing to disagree with their opinion but attacking them for having an opinion different than their expectations is just wrong.
I think those who are seeing some of us complaining are misunderstanding our point. I don't mind that they don't like the song, but it doesn't seem like some of them are open to the cute concept in the first place. You can tell from the first few seconds of their reaction. I posted a main comment on this video but you can see those who agree with me make some pretty valid points. It's a deeper problem than just "oh I don't like this song" depending on how you view it.
Ken Inao Hence our point: they're not open to the cute concept because it is not their preference, it ain't their style. Their sole purpose is to react to the song, musical aspect wise. Imo, they were pretty open, not with the cute concept, but with the musical aspect of the song in general. They pointed out, acknowledge and commended instrumentation, chord progression, notes that they liked/disliked. If they were really closed off the moment they found out it was a cute concept, they would've stopped listening right then and there and just said "look Umu, we hate cute concepts. We're not reacting." (Has happened before btw where reactors weren't feeling the song so Umu didn't upload their reactions.)
Though I agree that SOME of them became too involved with the concept and kinda lost track with reacting to the music alone but it is their opinion and does not reflect the performance and quality of Gfriend as a whole. I'm a Buddy btw, but I really don't get why people are upset at people who's purpose is to give opinions. Not every opinion is gonna be good. They still served their purpose, which is to react HONESTLY. I'd only be offended if they said they were trash because then it would be utter bullshit but they didn't. They still said something good about the songs despite it not being their style.
Yeah my main point is about those who got too involved, I was fine with most of them too. It's interesting how we're both Buddies but view this in two different lights, goes to show anything of subjective matter is really complex to argue with haha. But I think a lot of what I want to say is highlighted by this one guy named @Philip S, you can find his comment somewhere down in the comments.
As a Buddy, it is upsetting that most of them didn't like the songs, but I still respect their opinions. I guess I was expecting so much after seeing Kevin and Yunyi's preview and on a sub in one of the older videos saying to anticipate for Gfriend's guitar riffs.
What hurt me the most was when Ben said that he didn't like Umji's voice because it reminded me of all the hate she was receiving during Rough era. So many people were calling her ugly, saying that she can't sing and shouldn't be in the group, so Ben's comment, although not out of intentional malice, stung. To any Buddies reading this, remember, be buddies not bullies (also applies to non stans and casual listeners)
Yes! As a buddy myself! I know... There will always be haters around and I won't go and fight and argue around... But it's just sad knowing that they didn't mention any of the guitar solo or the rhythm that make them like it. And they seem rather not interested in the music also. :( the part where @4:10 he mentioned umji voice not being good also reminds me of her being bullied back then...

Thing is keep saying that "they are so young. Why are they young. They look so young" over and over again is not grading the music. And keep saying it's too much high end because they aren't used to it isn't any composition problem it's just that they can't wrap their head around songs meant to sound like that. I have no problem with them saying they aren't a fan of it but acting like it's objectively bad is just stupid. The comment about the guitar solo in Rough is a good comment that could objectively be better without the distortion etc, making the song remove the cute effect is not.

What I LIKE about this channel, is that they always give their fair honest views of the song.

I definitely think that you're either very into Gfriend or it's just not for you. There's no in between and that makes it kind of a cult group. If there's such a thing. I never got into any of the Gfriend songs, but I can see them having some intensely loyal fans.

Since Im an anime fan before I got into kpop. Gfriend has that Jpop vibe and what you would hear on an anime OP/ED. I bet they would be more successful if they debut in Japan rather than in Korea

Same! This is my first time watching/hearing GFriend (i was just passing by lol) and I can't help but think that they remind me of the JPop girl groups I used to listen to before. Especially the style of their voices and probably the melody they use.
I don't think you watched enough anime's or Gfriend's songs either. There are certain points in the title songs when they are similar. But no. The depth of the instramenral and the multiple layers of the vocalizations|instruments differs Gfriend from Japanese pop culture. The sound of the guitar and subtle but bright bass line is the only thing they have in common.

Okay... as a classic pianists and a Buddy I feel soooooo unsatisfied!! The songs are not even in the right timing!! They're faster, part of them are not listening to the fucking song, they judging by looking them... the song is in minor... how can you say that is a happy song?
I really like Gfriebd because of the instruments and strong vocals... and they're not even talking about that!! Just 4 or 5 talk about music... the others say just... shit (that for me sond racism) the way the guys ask each other "you really like that?" About how they harmonize with the music, how they put together the musicl style and the classic instruments...

Yunyi and kevin coming through with the gfriend appreciation!! Navillera was one of my favorite songs from last year its so fun, especially with the dance. I love what they said about "oh it sounds just like the last one but I love it". They have a signature style and either you're into it or you're not but you can't deny that its musically well done!

I can see why they didn't like Gfriend's genre of music. I was a music major myself and although I love GFriend, their music was not the number one thing that got me into them. The main reason is because, as many of them have said, it sounds too happy. They don't mean that GFriend themselves and their MV is too happy, they mean the chord progressions and notes used. I'm sure some of you can relate and not only musicians, but certain notes and chords sound "sad" while others "happy." In GFriend songs, they use a tad too much of those "happy" chords. Even minors were so high that it was borderline happy at times. One of the reactors said that the only thing he likes is that one use of silence for Yuju's part, and I agree. That's another thing that GFriend songs lack - use of silence a.k.a. down time. When a song lacks down time, it can get exhausting to listen to, because you're so up most of the time. Like I physically get tired just listening to GFriend songs and I can't logically explain it. Navillera used more silence than Rough and I think that's why they said it was a bit better. Combine that with the fact that they're not used to the cutesy concept, and there you go. Though I've seen them like cutesy concepts before, Gfriend's songs are a powerful-cutesy concept and what makes their songs powerful are the strings - especially the guitar solo over the strings? Man, I felt my heart was gonna burst listening to it. Not saying it's bad but it is overwhelming on top of everything else.
Thought I'm not part of them, please don't misunderstand the reactors. They still complemented parts of the songs and the things they liked but overall, in a classical musicians' point of view, I get where they're coming from. If anything, I feel that they really listened to the songs because if they hadn't, they would just comment solely on how cute they are etc. The fact that they commented on the musical aspects they liked and disliked means they served the purpose of this channel: Classical Musician's reaction and not kpop stan reaction. I love GFriend but if I ever want to listen to one of their title tracks, with the exception of Fingertip, I have to prepare myself beforehand.

I think it might make the reactors feel better about the concept of rough, if they knew that the song was probably an allusion to a japanese novel "the girl who jumped (ran) through time." You could see the reference in their title and lyrics. Maybe it is only me who noticed it, but for me the reference was quite obvious.

what i like when i watch classical musicians react is that even tho i don't like the group they're reacting to, they give me new insight to these songs and helps me appreciate the music more. it's just really cool
I have to admit, I also think they were a bit jaded by the concept on this one. Even just the name of the group set them off. Rough is not and does not look or sound like a happy group of girls hanging out with each other. Simply hearing a song that has a fast (or I guess you could say driving) tempo set in a high range and seeing a group of girls in school uniforms swayed their view on the song and led them to ignore many other things. I guess that's understandable to some extent as there are cultural differences here.
I'm not really into GFriend (I thought Glass Bead and Me Gusta Tu were way to cutesy for my liking) but Rough has always stood out to me in their discography. Perhaps it's the contrast of their image with the melancholy song (which I could tell was somber before reading the translations, for the record. The music itself is written to project this which is why I'm surprised they mostly didn't pick up on it.) but I find it stands out, along with Fingertip for obvious reasons, as different amongst their releases.
I also want to point out that since these songs are well over a year old a few of the members were still in high school when they came out.

Glass Bead was tolerable for me, MGT was also too cute for my liking and Rough would always be up there from the rest of their songs. I almost laughed when I heard they say Rough was a happy song, when you could see in their faces that they are sad. At least Shimon kind of got it.
I'm happy they reacted to this, maybe they just rushed this one out since some of the reactors are on break/graduating, they have a long list so I understand.
So I will not expect much if Fingertip will be posted here since they're done recording that one. It'll be still interesting to watch still.

i was really excited for them to react to gfriend but after seeing the comments... I guess i cant watch it cos i dont want to end up getting upset since i do enjoy the reactors reactions on the other groups and would hate to end up disliking them because of their opinions on gfriend 🙁 I've always known that gfriend is underrated and not a lot of people appreciate their talents and music, but it still always hurt me cos gfriend is my ult girlgroup 😢 I just wish people would see pass their stigma of "cute" being an easy or less talent driven thing... Gfriend is not even a full on "cute" group. Unlike the proper "cute" girlgroups whose dances are only to appeal "cute", gfriend's dances are sometimes alot harder than some boygroups. I'm someone that tends to get pulled in by groups that are talented and has put in alot of effort in what they do, also groups that has great personalities... that's why my 2 ults are gfriend and bts. They're both talented and were able to push through even coming from their small companies. I still think they're the most talented groups in both bg and gg.
I still suggest you watching the video. It's not as bad as the top comments stated lol. Also, if Yunyi and Kevin are your fav reactors, you'll enjoy it because they def liked it much more than others :) Also just because the reactors didn't like the concept doesn't mean they didn't notice how talented they are and stuff on the musical-end. I really respect that the musicians gave their true opinion. Not everyone is going to like the same thing. I LOVE Gfriend, I listen to all their songs, but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. The reactors gave their true opinions and found certain things they liked and hadn't liked, and I appreciate that. They weren't hating on it, they just... Like certain things. I can understand how Gfriend isn't for everyone, but I did like how they weren't deterred by others and said what they wanted to. However, I always like Yunyi and Kevin, since they're really into theory and how the music is put together. But at the same time, the other reactors take into account the feel of the music, and the concept. I like that while the music is important, they focus on all things. This channel is PURE REACTIONS, and it's how they feel, not how we want them to feel about it. Kpop is diverse in sound for a reason. Not everyone likes the same thing.
Sorry, I don't like ranting, but don't be disappointed that not everyone loves your favorite group. Sometimes they're a hit or a miss for some, but there is an entire fandom that loves your group just as much as you, and reactors are allowed to have their own opinions.
I think GFriend's asset is actually their synchronization in dancing and while the music may be not everyone's cup of tea (like this case), their dance routines are collectively highly regarded, building up their fame. I enjoy GF's songs but it's their insane sync which made me pay attention to them.

Loved that Kevin and Yunyi jammed out to it, that song got me into GFRIEND, and loved their opinions on Rough, and the trio's words about it were some good points, the guitar did kind of throw me off but other than that it was a really good song.
Lindsey talking about Navillera's lyrics lol "Are they gonna go downhill" I would be traumatized by some MV's and lyrics too since some have really detailed stories. There's also the sound that GFRIEND has that goes through their comebacks that make the songs sound slightly the same as the last one.
When I First listened to GFRIEND all the songs sounds like one, like everything was similar to my ears, but after the beginning I realized that everything was pretty unique
