Awesome 😊 my son is 11 and we are on level 6 as well, but had to start with level 3 because he had some gaps. So glad I did because he is much more confident in his work. I gave him the assessment and he is now testing in level 6. I am happy for this curriculum.
Thanks for your review and the glimpse into the actual routine with this curriculum. If all the reviews I sifted through, Yours inspired us to give it a try and my son has really taken to this! Best staple in our homeschool day. I appreciate this and extend my thanks!
Thanks for sharing. Even though my kids are home schooled, I love learning about it. I have bought the History curriculum because its important and I want my boys to know history well. I also purchased Life of Fred. We are on Butterflies now because we use it as a several times a week as read aloud and it is so great and my boys enjoy it too.
Hi, my daughter is 10, almost 11, and I had her complete level 3 the last few months to make sure she knew all the grammar and sentence diagramming etc, (I had pulled her from 4tj grade public schooling) she’s advanced In reading and spelling etc., so she completed the level in three months. She now easily assessed into level 5 (as she is entering grade 5 at the start of the school year) I will say, when watching you go through this lesson I was a bit surprised to see they are still covering Fanboys, so many levels later after level 3, she’s already learned that- and I could already see that the spelling words would not be challenging for her. She could already spell most of what was there. I’m starting to wonder if these levels are challenging enough? I’ve already been considering doing some IEW to get some foundational writing structure in because it feels like TGTB is pretty light on writing. I had already bought level 4 but it is very reading heavy and my daughter is already a very strong reader and since she assessed into level 5 I read that it had more writing I was considering that. Now that I’m looking at 6 and questioning if it challenging enough- I’m just rethinking using TGTB for those future years. 🤦🏻♀️ I’m hoping I’m making sense?! Basically- do you feel the levels have been overly repetitive and maybe not as challenging as you’d hoped? Did you feel there was a lack in writing assignments? Did you continue on using TGTB for the higher grade levels? Thanks so much for any insight.
Hi Tricia! I actually feel like it's not quite repetitive enough. It's a good fit for my youngest, but not my oldest. I would agree, if you're looking for more of a challenge for an "average" grade level, I would suggest adding a supplemental subject or switching curriculums. We've used IEW in the past and enjoyed it. I attribute their writing abilities to IEW.
I feel like it's just a good practice to change things up every once in a while for school especially language arts and math. I feel like the broader the kids get in terminology (especially referring to math) the more capable they will be in understanding different testing wordings and methodology of teaching. We've done IEW for several years. They can keyword outline and write well, but coming up with creative writing is more challenging because they've been able to use source texts for most of their years. I'm starting The Good and Beautiful this year to broaden their skillset. IEW is strong with writing, but their grammar while decent, still in other instructions like sentence diagramming. IEW's spelling zoo would be great for a strong speller as she/he can work to their own level. It sounds like for your daughter, perhaps moving her ahead several levels, or switching things up would be the best choice.
Andrew Stoller I actually did order the IEW structure and style- because while my kids are great with creative writing- they are missing the outline piece of things. So I think this will be perfect! After they go through structure and style I’m considering brave writer to tie together wheat they’ve learned and creative writing 👌🏻🥰 I also went with level 4 TGTB and my daughter will fly through it- so I already ordered and received level 5. It should be a fun and productive year!
Thank you for going through a lesson. It was so helpful. Now how did you know to watch that video about sentence diagramming? Did it list it in the lesson?
Thank you for sharing!!! I’m about to buy TGTB but still trying to figure out the Levels... I have a 9yr old and a 12 yr old...they scored on the 4 th level but wondering if I should buy from level 3 on so they won’t have any gaps? Or if I should just have level 4 💦
Good morning I have a question :) What was that silver, squares device next your son’s laptop? I’m curious to know if it was an external CD/DVD drive. If you have CDs or DVD that come won’t curriculum, how do your kids listen to or watch them?
Hi, I will be starting my daughter in 6 grade with this curriculum. My question is, how is writing treated? Did your son learn how to write essays or did you chose to augment this program with a writing one? Thanks so much!
This video was great!! I love to see how other people are using tgtb. Do you use any other supplements for language arts? I sometimes second guess myself and wonder is it enough.
Thank you so much! No, we don’t supplement with anything. I personally think as a homeschool mom, it’s SO easy to think we’re not doing enough, right? I try not to add any supplement until our year is over and we’ve tested. If I see they’ve fallen behind on any particular area, then I’ll add/change something. I usually surprise myself in seeing that less is often more effective! ;)

My oldest is actually doing Level 5 for the same reasons! I agree...very thankful for this curriculum :)

That is awesome! So glad to hear it :)

That’s awesome! I love hearing how families utilize curriculum :)
My son also uses the level 6 snd is doing very well with it. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Love it! :)
This video was very helpful as I’m preparing for next school year. Thank you! BTW where is that beautiful butterfly art from? 🦋

I just realized I was on my husbands youtube account. :) This is another homeschool mom though.

thank you for your email.. how old is your child to be in level 6
So helpful! Thank you!
Yay! You're very welcome :)
Thank you for going through a lesson. It was so helpful. Now how did you know to watch that video about sentence diagramming? Did it list it in the lesson?
Hi Tami! Yes, it's listed in the lesson and mentioned at the beginning of the course book. There are several references given for help ;)
Great video! We will be doing level 6 next year. Are you going continue with TGtB next year?
Yes! That is the plan :)
My daughter loves level 6! 💙
Awesome!!

I think you will be fine to go with the level they tested on. There will still be review of previous material. But ultimately, follow your gut ;)
Hello. Are the dictation sentences studied first or dictated without studying?
Yes. They are the first thing listed for each day: dictation and spelling words.
Good morning I have a question :) What was that silver, squares device next your son’s laptop? I’m curious to know if it was an external CD/DVD drive. If you have CDs or DVD that come won’t curriculum, how do your kids listen to or watch them?
Hi Valerie! Yes, it’s an external CD/DVD drive. We use it for any DVDs we use for school. :)
Thanks. Just starting Level 6. Do you know if the book Little Lord is specifically assigned in the student workbook?
Yes, it is! :)

Liza Lim the writing is not intense, which my boys liked. However, if you’re looking for more intensity, I would suggest supplementing.
Thank you!
