I think that having kids look at art and respond to it is not just about art education it's also teaching them the skill of inferencing which helps with literacy because often when you read a book you have to infer information that isn't being directly said to you.

Yup! Also teaches them to see things from different perspectives. My daughter went to a magnet school for elementary school and they did this and asked a couple incredibly open ended questions and the responses were amazing.

Love your take on choosing a level not based on grade! We just received our Level 3 for our 4th grade son and he doesn't care at all, but my own pride took a little hit! I chose to go with what was best for him and not worry about my feelings. I don't want him to struggle from the start!

Yes!!! Please please please do a video about homeschooling a child with special needs! Our daughter, age 5 1/2, adopted from India almost 3 years ago, has some significant developmental and cognitive delays and trying to figure out how to do school with her is incredibly difficult.

My 3rd grader who finished 2nd grade ABeka math is using Teaching Textbooks level 4. I compared all the scope and sequence of ABeka math 3 and Teachong Textbooks level 4. They are very comparable. This enables her to do lessons without Mom or me (grandma) teaching her. She found it very easy to start. 15 lesson trial is free. She always wants to do extra lessons!

I adore TGTB. It doesn't visually frustrate me to teach from. I can adjust it to my child's understanding. I never used the pre k but I would love to see your video on special needs teaching using TGTB. I hope to stick with the company because their layout is so consistent and organized.

Thank you for this video, Angela! I use MathUSee and have been considering masterbooks math, so it’s good to hear your comparison. Also, I would definitely love to see a video of teaching a child with special needs! I currently homeschool our oldest (finished gr 3) and will add my 2nd (finished gr 1) in the fall. The youngest of our 4 kids has DS and, though she’s only currently 2, I like to explore my options for the (not so distant!) future. So it would be awesome to hear about that from you. 😊

We also use the good and the beautiful. We did preschool, then primer and then Kindergarten but had to stop because it was pretty challenging compared to the level K primer and my kids got very discouraged. I do think it is a great curriculum- just the jump between primer and level K seemed to be a little too big for my kids. Glad to see that my kids weren't the only ones not on "grade level!" Keep the homeschool videos coming!

I absolutely love how the good and the beautiful is set up .. only thing I wish I could change would be rather than using level k than on to the numbers .. just keep it letters that way it doesn’t take a hit on the littles Confidence level.
My 10 year old was like ummm I’m not this grade and we tried to explain the system and he’s like that’s nice .. I’m not this grade.
The curriculum it self is amazing!! Love it 🥰

You are the first homeschool mom I’ve found with a child with Down Syndrome! I homeschool three boys, my oldest, 7 has Down Syndrome too. I’d love to see videos on her curriculums and pace you go at, things you’ve learned works. My son did TGTB primer last year, but a lot of it was to difficult, so this year I ordered TGTB pre-k and a lot of it is to easy. So we are also doing All About Reading, but moving at a much slower pace, with lots of review. I laminate the work sheets so he can practice them more than once. What do you use for handwriting? I did Hand Writing without Tears last year and he really struggled. So I’m doing it again same curriculum this year. It’s so hard to find good handwriting curriculum. He struggles writing letters still. I also just started using So Happy To Learn! It’s a curriculum for children with Down Syndrome! He loves it, so we add that in too. It’s great, but there isn’t a lot of structure or help, it’s all printable worksheets and reading. For math we are doing TGTB K, but I’m worried a lot of it will be to difficult. And he needs hands on for math, abstract concepts are to difficult. So you recommend a different math. I’ll let you know how math goes for this year, I also have a couple other books to add in..

    • @dominique573n9

Dakota Jean not sure if you are still looking but rightstart math is excellent for children with special needs.. my daughter has brain damage and we use rightstart it’s very hands on and she loves it. It’s the program that has the most manipulatives, it’s pricey at first bc of the manipulatives but cheap every year after that.

We use TGTB for everything and with history we took a break last year and I ordered Notgrass Our Star Spangled Story but I just didn’t like it as much, so I returned it and we came back to TGTB but I went to library and got tons of books on each subject and it made my daughter like it so much more! How do you handle teaching different levels? Like, how does your day look? I’m looking at The Good and The Beautiful for my twins going into first grade but they will be on different levels for language arts. Does Rosie realize she’s on a lower curriculum than her brothers? I’m not sure how to handle one twin knowing he’s not able to do the same work as his twin. They were in different classes in public school last yr. I’m worried his self esteem will be squashed. I always tell him him as long as he’s doing his own best than that’s great, not to compare but that’s hard for a 7 yr old.

We're in our 15th of home schooling here (5 kids, 3 have graduated). We've tried so many curriculums over the years. What I've found for math for my highly distractable child is Christian Liberty Press. They have K through 2nd grade. They use grayscale and one color so the pages aren't overwhelming. I've been very pleased with the content both in what they teach and how they present it. Just thought I'd mention that in case you need to try something else with your littles in the future. One thing I should add is that Christian Liberty press math does not come with an answer key. Even though I don't have a math brain, I've never struggled to figure out an answer for the k through second grade books but I could totally understand it being easier just to see an answer key to check their answers rather than doing the math yourself with many kiddos like you have, that might be frustrating for you. I'm not insulting your math skills at all
just looking at the time factor, LOL!

We use math for a living education but it's not quiet enough in my opinion. I supplement KUMON work books for extra added learning.

hilary armstrong I think it taught all the concepts I wanted to hit, but there wasn’t enough reinforcement and review for my kid to maintain the learned skills! After level 2 in master books we tried the teaching textbooks 3.0 and it changed my world!

In your opinion could the science units be used for secular homeschooling?

    • @kerstinanderson6172
      @kerstinanderson6172 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have done several of the science units with my kiddos, and I think it would be pretty easy to make them secular since the mention of a divine creator is very minimal (and doesn't go into great detail).

@@cassandramarie8046 You are welcome! I love the science units. Although I am religious myself, I have done secular science until now because I don't like the "new earth" and "universal" models. I've even had a friend review them that has a significant science background before we went "all-in". I have been so happy with these unit studies (we completed space, introduction to energy, and half-way through the human body--which we will complete in the fall).

@@kerstinanderson6172 that's wonderful! I'm pretty sold on this curriculum, so far I have just loved it! We are an agnostic family, but I think it'll work for us until we get to the point of learning about evolution and history. Thanks for your input once again, it's very helpful! 👍😊

As an ADHDer I totally get the distracted thing. When I was in primary school, they had dolphin tasks and bee tasks and I feel like a number or letter would have been better. I think it's great that homeschooling offers the flexibility to address these issues and change the roots of them instead of just coping. It can probably help him realise his true potential. By the way, didn't you mention you have ADHD yourself? Could you ever make a video on that? How it impacts you in general or your parenting? You seem to rock it, so that would definitely be good to know😅

Hey Angela! First off, I just wanted to let you know that homeschooling has been tugging at my heart for a while now.... If I am being completely honest, I never felt that I was capable. I was terrified of failing my kids. But a few months ago I started researching it and that's when I discovered your channel! FYI...pretty sure we may be neighbors! Well not technically but we're both rollin around "The Hill!" And who knew?! When I started watching your channel on you tube I had no idea that we lived in the same area! Another funny side note....My kids saw a silver passenger van the other day when we were at lunch and said... "Look it's Mrs. Hucks( my bestie and partner in crime on this new journey in homeschooling..who also happens to have a silver passenger van)!" And I said "noooooo..... But I am pretty sure that is Angela from you tube!" Anyways, Long story short..... It has been thru YOU, attending the THRIVE homeschool convention, and lots of prayer that I have found the confidence to take on homeschooling! Soooo BIG shout out to you and your fam for being an open book and an inspiration to so many! Okay, now that I have laid that all out on the table.... I have a question....We are leaning towards math u see for this year. Do you think it would beneficial to supplement with the Math- master text books? Or would that be too much/confusing? I have one going into 1st and another going into 6th! And math is not my strong point😣

Oh yeah! Hey neighbor!!!! Do y’all ever go up to the local park? Maybe we will run into you there! I think math u see is totally all you need. We’ve used it for our older girls before they could move into teaching textbooks.

I was just wondering what made you kind of on the fence with The Good And The Beautiful History program. I’m only asking because I was thinking about using it this year for our 7th, 4th, and 3rd grader this year.

  • @shelleyyoung6927

Thank you for this informative overview! Seems like we have very similar homeschool curriculum choices! I am loving all of the things we have gotten from The Good & The Beautiful so far. This is our first year using their curriculum and we’ve been really enjoying the Handwriting and the Language Arts along with a handful of other supplementary materials I’ve ordered from them. I was considering their Math for my first grader, but after watching several negative TH-cam videos about it, decided to buy the same Masterbooks Math for a Living Education that you have. We are enjoying the more Charlotte Mason approach of it, but I feel like I want just a little more written practice and critical thinking than what we’ve gotten so far. So I’m planning to order a Mathematical Reasoning book for her to do as well, which I only heard about from a review I read of another parent combining the two curriculums. Are you familiar with the Mathematical Reasoning books? I’m planning to get one for my older daughter also who is doing the first level of Teaching Textbooks (which I also love).
