    Sounds like the UK apprentice scheme is slightly different to ours in Australia, here it was one day a week at TAFE for three of your four year apprenticeship, but during that day, half the day was 'theory' and the other half was 'practical' in the TAFE workshops- where you wired fuseboxes, did 'newbuild' and 'rewire' on existing walls etc (the various trades all worked together, the carpenters would learn their trades building a wall, then the sparkies would practice wiring both during the build and afterwards on a finished wall etc), plus all the other skills needed for commercial or domestic wiring...

    I like Reuben's piece on the difference between college and on the job learning. You are at the stage now where your skill lavel and understanding are increasing. I think Jordan has created a good working environment which has fostered a good learning space where you can excel. Its in everyone's best interest that you succeed most of all you. The Theory is as important as the practical. So now get the info you need by asking questions of your teachers and seek out the mentors there that you currently have at work.

  • @Mark-xr4zt
    @Mark-xr4zt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just some feedback about the approach taken with adding a socket to the upstairs radial circuit that might have some unintended consequences. So by extending the radial circuit rather than branching off to the new socket you will have unnecessarily increased the resistance in the circuit that will lower the R1+R2 values for all the sockets that follow on the from the point were the new socket was added.
    This could result in those sockets no longer being within the design parameters for the circuit e.g. Zs values being to high for the protective device. The other is that the cables to the new socket were run in a thermally insulated wall so the derating factor of the cables current carrying capacity will now apply to all the remaining sockets from that point onwards. Whilst the the approach was well intentioned it negates the benefits of a radial circuit which allows you to have branches that keep cable lengths to a minimum reducing IR2 losses and avoids having to apply derating factors associated with one point to all remaining points. Even if it had been a ring circuit a spur would have been the better option due to the thermal insulation in the wall alone.

    • @AndyHobson
      @AndyHobson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Won't they have tested it afterwards? Especially seeing as Jordan insists on minor works certs which I think is really good because some trades would leave without you having any documents.

    • @sionrees9824
      @sionrees9824 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndyHobson you would

    • @Mark-xr4zt
      @Mark-xr4zt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndyHobson I am not suggesting that they would not have tested the circuit. I am saying that it struck me as a bit of an odd decision to take a course of action that potential derates the current carrying capacity of the cable and impacts other points of utilisation on the circuit when it was unnecessary and wasteful (use of unnecessary cable). Also with regards to the derating factors from the potential change in installation method, testing would not pick this up as it would have to recalculated.
      In reality, without having all the specifics (which we will never get from a TH-cam video) does it matter, did it have an impact etc., etc. we will never know and I am not saying that what they did was noncompliant, just not in my personal view the best way of tackling this based on the information I could see in the video. So my comment wasn't meant as a derogatory critique but intended as some feedback, for them to consider and either take onboard or disregard. I would hope that in general, they find the feedback useful and see them as an opportunity to improve.
