My heart used to sink every time I was confronted by a heating centre jumble. John is far too polite in describing other trades messing with any electrical installation work. Why are detailed circuit drawings, and labelling of circuit functions, not a requirement, particularly for control systems? In commercial/industrial installations it is essential.

You need to look for a cable tracer from the IT supplies. Sends a tone down the wires and the receiver picks up and amplifies the tone dependant on proximity to the cable. David Savery showed one in a video. We used to use them to trace back cables in IT wiring. Also like you I hate wiring done badly. Currently dealing with wiring to the wiring centre that’s at the back of the cupboard behind the hot water tank. Power to the supplies is a single radial but someone decided to use filler to “glue” it to the inside of the plasterboard. Just wish they designed houses to have proper risers with proper accessible cable runs.

Sometimes when you upgrade the board it throws up many additional problems in this case the shared neutral issue not easily picked up on an EICR originally. The good thing is you are gonna get this resolved with a safer installation in place.

The 120mm discs are perfect for chipboard flooring . Gives great access and if you use the right cutter it gives a groove (10mm ) so the discs sit flush .. better than ripping up flooring just drill a few of them if needed
That house looked like a 60s or 70s build. They used a lot of asestos artex in those days so drilling through it is not a good idea. Artex is so called because "asbestos reinforced textured coating". Always get it checked first.

I recenlty accidentialy drilled into a the ring main, to fix this I added two maintenance free JBs under the floor and fixed to a joist with new cables to reconnect the ring. (I went for two JBs to avoid having to double up the connections). Would this be within regs? The JBs are rated at 32a each and the load for the repair is heavy (tumble drier and washing machine / Microwave). I would have loved to pull fresh cable instead of using JBs but pulling up the floor was not an option.
Dad's an electrician. He always tried to get me into it but I climbed trees instead. I'm watching this as education and most of it goes riiiight over my head. Must be my lack of math brain.
I never understand why u install tubing and pull single wires when doing wireing insted of laying cables. In norway we do this, and its so simple to rewire or if u need extra wires.

If I was there I’n that situation with the missing cpc I would have put a cable locator croc lead on the cpc at one end and go and find where the cpc stops giving a magnetic field and there’s going to be the fault however it will only work if the cpc is completely disconnected like it was in your situation but if it’s connected but your looking for a poor connection it won’t find it that way because it will still have some kind of continuity
Can you explain the importance of an earth on those downlights? I don't see the benefit, it is not like someone can touch it as the light fitting as it is in the ceiling. In a lot of countries they don't put earth on those lighting circuits.
That foam above the old fused switch looked like it was doing airtightness work. If you just cut it out and yanked the wires through without replacing/resealing then that's why electricians shouldn't be allowed to mess with buildings - they ruin the airtightness. It's fair to say that plumbers aren't much better.

And indeed since he was carrying out the work on behalf of his employer he would have required a risk assessment and method statement including the asbestos report. Shadow vac. And let's not forget he contaminated the property with dust that should have been properly cleaned. Site manager and I deal with this everyday, so yes h&s law was broken 😂

What MF box/connectors was used to re-join the 6mm cooker circuit in the ceiling?

With chip board flooring you can buy a disc cutter hole saw, and make good with the plastic discs which set in the bevelled edge the hole saw makes

It just depends on the job sometimes, Cory helps with a lot of quoting now so its better for Reuben to be on site with one of the other guys 👍🏻
