Can Rishi Sunak stop Nigel Farage taking over Tory Party?

- Rishi Sunak has unveiled his manifesto, promising billions in tax cuts and lower immigration - but after his D-Day disaster and Nigel Farage back in the game, is it enough to shift the dial in the election or even enough to stop the right-wing of his own party turning on him before polling day?
[Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
And with Reform creeping up in the polls, can Farage’s party really overtake the Tories to become the opposition? And what would happen then?
Joining Krishnan Guru-Murthy to discuss this on this episode of The Political Fourcast are Conservative peer Jo Johnson, who helped write the winning Tory manifesto in 2015, Harriet Harman, former Labour Leader and Deputy Leader, and Reform UK’s Deputy Leader David Bull.
Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson, Nick Jackson.

Didn’t the tories raise tax 21 times in the last parliament?
How are they low tax?
Low for the rich.
Exactly. They are leftwing like labour. Reform will raise income tax base level to 20k and its funded.
They are the definition of gaslighting: “forget the last 14 years, I’ll change now, promise…”
They are reducing tax for rich people. The word "party" means something.
Liz trust literally tried removing the 45% tax rate for high earners and make it 40% that fked the GBP value and she wanted to lower corporate tax instead of i creasing it and directly helping the economy. When tories say reduce tax, they usually imply reducing it for the rich. Claiming to reduce tax without a proper plan to fund the gap will just drive off inflation. They’ll claim to reduce tax by 2%, and when they do, they ignore the fact that prices of everyday goods and services literally doubled as a result. They want to look good on paper. Such a brainless bunch.

When Brexit was confirmed the government should have provided 100,000 free scholarships to UK citizens to nurses, doctors and dentists. Tuition to be paid back at 75% if leaving NHS within 1 year, 50% paid back leaving within 3 years and 25% paid back if leaving within 5 years, zero paid back if staying 5 years +. Anyone that stays 10+ years receives a £25,000 bonus towards either pension or deposit for mortgage on right to buy scheme. As a nation we should be in a position of being able to export nurses and doctors not relying on immigration to fill vacancies. When i was young most girls i knew wanted to be a nurse or vet and i ask myself what the heck happened! Also the government should incentives people caring for family members and friends to assist social care of others within their neighbourhood therefore giving carers a possible career option and route into full time employment. A carer on UC as well as carers allowance if given an additional £50-£60 to care part time for an additional person would assist in current shortages as well as save tax payers millions in the long run.
@errolneptune3995 Your timeline and % on tuition payback is way too short considering the costs. Do you know much about the training structure, costs and usefulness of doctors at FY1, FY2? Giving someone relief at 50% at 3 years service and 75% at just 5 years is madness. It would be better linked to years of service AND training grade achieved. I'm not keen to give 75% relief on a doctor that finished FY2 and then did 3 years out of training giving service still at such a low grade and then pop off to the USA with virtually no student debt. Chances are that they would get a bit more training to the mid Specialty, and then go though, but that is not the way to keep highly trained doctors and retain them at consultant level. I do think that we should set it to length of service at a particular grade and that length of service needs to be longer than what you have set out.
@@shelleyphilcox4743 so what is the cost of 100,000 on UC for 10 years with fully paid rent and living allowance. That could be offset against it.

The Tory’s tax proposals disproportionately benefit the wealthiest, the higher your salary the more you benefit. A fairer system would be to raise the threshold at which you have to pay tax, that would benefit lower earning working families and pensioners.
Reform say raise tax threshold from 12.5k to 20k 👍

This is an immigration election, the whole country is fed up with this insanity!!
Like it or not we need more migrants not less but it must be the right kind and let me explain why. Baby boomers are starting to retire and since the 1970s birth rates have declined so there simply isn’t enough British born to fill these jobs so to support people during retirement and for the economy to grow we are going to need migrants but it should be managed properly where we do our bit and take fair share of asylum seekers and migrants we need to fill jobs and no matter how much you may want less migrants to come here we will need to fill the skills gap
Not the whole country, only intelligent people, the rest will vote Labour or tories.
Actually it's a cost of living election. Immigration comes below that and the NHS is every poll that includes a spectrum of voters.
@@moynanplayz5379 Wherever these immigrants go to settle they ruin the communities, business starts to disappear, native people move away, this is happening in all our big cities, look at the state of London, I live in Portsmouth and it’s getting bad there. @@brunostudley2191 immigration has been poorly managed by both main parties since the 1990s. Firstly you need the infrastructure to handle large amounts of people arriving and immigration should be based on the skills we need and I’m a Labour member. Also we need to take our fair share of asylum seekers but not everyone
24:00 KGM is correct. The recent increase in immigration is a deliberate post-Brexit policy by the Conservatives to import cheap labour, specifically for the NHS. They've had ~5 years since the EU referendum to train more doctors, nurses, midwives, but domestic workers would demand higher wages, which they don't want to pay, as the NHS is already budget constrained.
Sunak's government also increased the number of student visas for foreign students, who pay much higher fees, which the universities increasingly depend on as their government funding has been withdrawn. The big mistake was allowing students to also bring their dependents (family) which increased the total by ~30%.
Sunak didn’t increase the number of student visas; it was Boris/Patel policy

There you have it, torries admit the truth. They're actively fighting "wage inflation"... I guess regular inflation is fine, food inflation, housing inflation, fuel inflation. But when it comes to "wage inflation" AKA allowing wages to catch up to rising costs, that's when they put their foot down to appease the interests of big business over the average working person. Let them get poorer, make sure they never afford to purchase property, make sure their rents are as high as possible... but under no circumstance should their wages rise! Flood the country with immigrants to suppress their wages!

Just the suggestion that Johnson joins Labour says everything
Of course all immigration has an impact on the NHS. Those "11 thousand illegal migrants" are entitled to twice weekly GP checks and access to NHS dentistry... Taxpaying citizens can't access that at all. I've had to wait months for blood tests and still can't see my local GP. Meanwhile I'm still working but feeling like sh*t until the NHS catches up. I've worked since i was 17 and do not expect to be put at the back queue to people who could've stayed in any other safe EU country.
One factor on birth rate is the unaffordable cost of childcare to allow a parent to work. Or govt subsidies to give financial assistance so one parent can stay at home while the other works. Other cultures have families and communities who look after their own but the West generally doesn't instil those values. There's no party talking about the traditional family..
Nearly every single aspect of that diatribe in wrong I'm afraid...even the term "illegal migrants" is debateable...nearly 700,000 people came to the UK last year and you don't mention that...instead you bleat on about the state of our public services...well they are nothing to do with immigration...

If immigrants are needed to fill shortages of staff in businesses then let the, soon to be richer, owners of those businesses house and support them and train them. Because when the profits are coming in, the tax payer won't get any.

The UK was one of the states that drafted the ECHR and one of the first to ratify it, this wasn't forced upon us.
It seems that the more immigration we have (and, yes, it's never been higher) the more we seem to require, to fill all the gaps in our workforce and particularly the NHS. This is like being stranded at sea in a lifeboat and trying to quench your thirst by drinking seawater. 🤔

I’m using that.
But all known figures show that it’s not immigration that’s been causing the issues to begin with. Bad organisation and underfunding and waste is the causes. Look at Doctors now. Many smaller doctors surgery’s are now joining with others to maximise profits as the deal for GP’s is basically stand alone private systems. The system has been cut to ribbons. And a few are making millions out of it

I've not read any Reform policies which are far right. I'm not sure that term has the same meaning anymore if common sense policies is far right.
The real question they are all missing:
Why British natives (All British citizens) cannot afford family life, to have children ?????
Paul very good comments but you won't get a reply from the tories 😊
@paulsaintclair9761
The answer to that is not just due to finances.
The uk left wing has destroyed British culture in favour of woke diversity culture, which has drastic effect on the youth.
It's no longer "normal" to have a family, instead have multiple interracial one night stands
I was thinking the exact same thing mate. Me and my Mrs earn £40k between us, mid 20s. You improve the quality of life, mental health improves, more career drive. More money. More children.
I know it isn't as simple as that, but there is logic in it.
I would love more kids. We have one and the moment and she's amazing. But we can't afford another.
@@KhanCarnivore Totally agree Muslims 78%of women don't work and they have 6 to 8 children 67% of Muslim men don't work the women get free housing they don't pay interest on anything if they go to pray and drive through ULEZ they are renenburst 🙃 we are totally screwed we need change REFORM UK 🇬🇧 the last chance we've got 🤔
It's wrong to assume that the main cause of dropping birth rates is the cost of having a family. There are lots of social and cultural reasons why we're having less kids. The rate has been under 2 since the early 70s.
I am voting Reform “YES” ✔️
Does it matter what proven liars say they will do?
Rich people pretending to be normal people who want to use politics to get in so they can help all their rich friends. The UK is a prime example of why first past the post does not work
Vote reformuk let's change that
Jo Johnson just showing how out of touch the Tories really are. Just bleating on about the same old immigration argument, the Tories just don't get it, THE PEOPLE DON'T WANT ANY MORE IMMIGRANTS, stop trying to make your rich pals richer buddy
People do want immigrants though. There is variation in the number and who would be counted. Noone wants no immigration, that's insane, with that policy would wouldn't have sports people moving to UK to play for local teams, or British people who emigrated moving back home, diplomats, foreign students, CEOs, actors etc etc. No immigration at all would be insanity and not one nation on earth has this policy.
You need to think more before you type.
3 great guests. Really enjoyed that. Makes such a refreshing change to listen to sense.
Tax, at 38%, is the highest since 1948. Lest we forget.
Ageing population, massive pensions, unhealthy population demanding increasingly complex and expensive healthcare, broken property and home construction market, low productivity, aging infrastructure etc. It all needs paying for. The UK fundamentals are quite poor. UK will never have particularly low taxes ever again.
Then there's ever more tax on petrol, beer etc plus vat, CGT, inheritance tax, dividend tax,
Answer to the question: NO!
having the brother of the PMs biggest enemy, as a tory representative is laughable
A Johnson isn't going to save them anymore
I agree that no one is going to trust a Johnson, but this particular one seems to be grounded, reasonable, sensible and has the courtesy to listen to other's opinions. As such, I was willing to listen to him, although I would never give him or his party my vote. His brother Boris is a buffoon and a self-centered liar, but Joe actually does sound intelligent.
@@andrewjones-productionsCompletely agree with you.
Isn't Truss his biggest enemy? Or people who want to honour dead Candian, French, and American D-Day soldiers?
He’s his own worst enemy
PEOPLE POWER CAN WORK IF WE WORK TOGETHER, TIME TO FORCE CHANGE, TIME TO GET OUR COUNTRY BACK AS IT SHOULD BE. VOTE REFORMUK IN OUR MILLIONS 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
They say the NHS is struggling to fill vacancies. Actually what is happening now, third year nursing students cant actually get a job on qualifying . The same hospitals that claim to have vacancies will not employ their 3rd year nursing students upon qualification. There is no money to employ them and posts have been promised to oversees workers.
A balanced discussion.... Finally!!!
The party have been in power for some years; why now all these tax cut and the rest are coming up.
Reform guy's gut the eyebrow wrong. I can't stop staring at it...
There is no going back.
Reform could snatch many votes from the Conservatives. Tories have the highest tax levels since 1948! LibDems get my vote 🗳
Well done David
Reform...
The voting system needs to change.
That's why you should vote lib dem then
@@DDougz hahaha. Really? I would not vote for any of these lying creatures, Tory, labour, libs. They all want to turn this country into a British minority country. North London looks like a 3rd slum.
You have to admire Harriet for the way that through good times and bad, Labour and Conservative governments, times of turmoil and calm, she has steadfastly stuck with the same haircut. She is truly an inspiration to us all.
