I believe that later in life as an adult Al tells everyone what Bernie Did, and the side actually builds a monument to him. not because he was a Zion or anything political, But because he fought and through his actions, tried to save the colony. Short definition of a Hero honestly. I think I also read somewhere that Al did eventually become a Mobile suit pilot as well.
In the version I watched is was pretty heavily implied he connected the dots. He sees her get escorted out of the cockpit, and has a breakdown/thousand yard stare, then sees her at the end when she's being transferred. Even tells him to say bye to Bernie since she couldn't see him before leaving. Then he starts almost crying so she kisses him on the cheek. Think it was basically implied she knew Bernie was the other pilot by that moment
@@Drocks0 I'm pretty sure he meant Bernie never knew Chris was the Gundam pilot. Al definitely knew, they make a whole thing out of him reacting to her having been pulled from the cockpit. There's really no two ways about that.
No matter how many times I watch this, it still brings me to tears. This clip alone does what every other Gundam has failed to do in its anti-war message and I love this series for that. I love how it doesn't rely on melodramatic MS fights to show the tragedy of war and that the battles that do happen only help emphasize how tragic and pointless war is.
>still believing that gundam is still anti war >first series is literally just saying its your choice on how the mess of war is decided and that there is no good answer
Dramatic Irony, Tragedy, Humour, that OAV had it all. And it will be foreved one of my favorite piece of media ever watched. Rest in Peace Bernie, you may have died a futile death. But you will be remembered among the Legends. Not bad for a rookie.
This is one of the greatest anti-war films, because it takes the brave step towards making sure the audience knows how futile it all is. Not only is Bernie’s death unnecessary, but Al loses all his friends in the process (grown distant from school friends and Chris left to earth). Then the final shot with its zoom out from the colony really nails home that this was just, one tiny side story, tangential to the war that ultimately had no bearing on the war’s progress at all.
Honestly, Bernie very well might have saved Al's life. Not because he stopped a nuke or destroyed the Gundam. But by showing him that, war fucking sucks. If Al didn't meet or form a bond with Bernie he probably would've joined the military during the Neo Zeon wars and probably would've died a nameless soldier. But now? Now that he's seen the older brother that he never had get killed by the older sister figure in her life? I don't think he'll ever get near a mobile suit or even the military ever again. I like to believe that Al became a political activist or maybe even a politician. Just so that he could find a peaceful way to stop wars. And that he had taken Bernie's words to heart, that he shouldn't hate and that everyone on all sides are just humans trying to do what they think is right.
I mean, if I wanted to be a pedantic ass I could say there's no guarantee Al would've been killed in combat, but you have a really good point either way. Even if we wanted to take that tack, just sparing Al the horror of experiencing war on the frontlines, as a soldier, was doing him a great service. Al's whole experience in 0080 can basically be summed up with "war is really cool, until it isn't". Bernie helped him to understand that. That's his legacy, really.

He mentioned something interesting, Cypher is pursuing new research. He claims what they're doing in Africa is the missing piece, a weapon to surpass metal gear.
Someone in the end in 2019 found out Bernie action of demolishing the Gundam Alex helped Zeon to last their war longer. By saving Char from Amuro for keeping the Alex not delivered to the guy, Bernie silent death has indirectly kept the living torch of Zeon, Char Azanable, alive. Thus, encouraging the Zeon to continue fighting, despite failing from time to time against Earth federation, even to a hundred year later
If he Saved Char Indirectly with it, Then bernie Wiseman is even a more greater Character as he was before. because Char Aznable is such a good Character too.
You know, the thing I like the most about this beautiful OAV Series is that, unlike too many Gundam series, this show’s anti-war message is delivered through ACTUAL regular people and normal army officiers and they REMAIN this way until the very end. Al start the story as a naive child and finish as a now broken one; Chris is simply a test pilot at the beginning and while she gets promoted it’s clearly not an overly big one; and Bernie start as a inexperimented, disposable rookie among a team of equally disposable soldiers anddie while still nothing more than that. It’s a kind of down to earth type of story I honestly wish to see more in the Gundam Franchi, at least from war I’ve seen now (MSG, Zeta, ZZ, Char’s CC, War in the Pocket, F91).
Bernie is really is a tragic hero, his fight with the Alex prevented it from getting shipped to amuro which saved chars live in the final battle of the original anime, which in turn made the rest of the universal century, for better and for worse, possible
dammit Bernie why couldn't you have just gone and delivered the information to the Federation... :,( why did you have to risk your life and the Gundam's pilot in a stupid meaningless fight.... I can understand his reasons. he explicitly tells us them. It's still so sad to realize he died
I know this is an old comment but Bernie was insecure about his military accomplishments since he was a rookie and he wanted to be a hero that is probably why he kept lying to Al about his supposed achievements of almost becoming an ace and probably why he joined the army in the first place. On top of that he was the sole survivor from his crew. I bet he would have still fought even if there wasn't a nuclear attack threat on the colony just for the sake of being a soldier and honouring himself and his dead comrades. He died like a warrior because he didn't want to live on as a coward.
@@biterness2323 well even at the end he said that if everything goes right, maybe he'll hang out with everyone and live peacefully, it was just a small little thought that crossed his mind; i see it as if he had a tiny bit of hope that everything would turn out ok, even if that was extremely unlikely, he still had some hope. Late ass reply but he was probably planning on escaping to Zeon controlled territories after destroying the gundam, as such he had no intentions in turning himself in and relied on Al in doing this task for him.
@@everettomailia8668 "He then accidentally throws himself into the ocean and is unfortunately exposed to the horrors of having to learn how to run the Mother Base again."
Well they end up together Robot Wars 3, the main charaters intercept a comm transmission from Bernie to his CO and Chris verbally smacks him untill he joins you. XD So somewhere they did get a happy ending. :)
That's why I always had respect for the SRW games. Because they at least fixed a LOT of the crap that happens in the Gundam universes. While I do understand that it won't ever change canon, I'm fine with that because at least that way I can still have my favorite characters happy in at least one setting. (Too bad it never fixed that MASSIVE pain Rayearth etched in my heart. I swear, Emeraude died and was never allowed to have a happy ending with Zagato all because of the fucked up "rules" that Cephiro had. I swear, if it came to me choosing either my greatest love or living peacefully within Society, I would say "FUCK YOU" to Society in a heartbeat.)
@@Phoenix_Destiny_Kai Yeahj they have made certain series and chars I hate either tolerable or like their takes on them. Such as EVA and Zeta Gundam. Also the comic fun of the Girls form Rayearth wanting the Getters to train them in 30 XD and the Getters internally being THIS IS SO BAD AN IDEA!)
@boomstix I agree with your first point to an extent. To your 2nd point though, again, I disagree. Speaking specifically about "War in the Pocket", the story was made for character development. The main character is a boy and in the 6 episodes, there are 4 mobile suit battles, all rather short. The writers would have to be idiots for Alfred not to be changed by his experience. I'm not saying they didn't do a great job but the setting & premise lent themselves to character development.
Ya it never came out here to to copy right issues however there is an fan translation out there. Though it's old in several other games you can save Bernie too. :D Normally he does end up with Chris as her boyfriend. >D
@octoslut I don't see how Chris "relied" on the Gundam. She piloted the suit. What else was she supposed to do? As for who the better pilot was between her and Bernie, that's debatable. Chris hadn't fought in a real battle herself so even though she was piloting a superior suit, she was basically a rookie too. I'm not comparing the two but like Chris, Amuro took some shots when he first started piloting his Gundam.
haha its 10 years and Im wonder if ya still there, how you been and whether u still remember the series. But if you look up profile of Christina, she's actually an ace pilot with numerous achievement on battlefield, proving herself to defeat many Zakus despite being outnumbered. So there's a huge gap between her and Bernie the rookie
@@ducanhluu2697 Wow! Literally a decade later. If course I still remember the series. One of the best stories in the franchise. I didn't know Christina was actually an ace.
@@ducanhluu2697 It's all good man. I've always found the term "ace" a bit subjective. If on-screen kills determine ace status, there might not be as many normal human aces compared to Newtype/Enhanced aces in the Gundam franchise. If we base it on pure skills and general reputation though, there were dozens. Three of my favorites were 08th MS Team's Norris Packard, 008's Anavel Gato and Zeta's Yazan Gable. Bernie was most definitely a legend. Made a friend, taught the kid some valuable life lessons and did his best to complete his mission.
@octoslut I never said Bernie was a bad pilot but he sure as hell wasn't a good one. The guy was a green rookie who got shot down on his first mission. Yes, his Zaku was inferior to the Alex but Bernie simply didn't have the piloting skills to prolong the battle.
@dchris1990 Have you watched this video? Bernie didn't want to do what you suggested because it would have been the easy way out. He said he didn't want to avenge his unit but finishing the mission for them had to have played in part in his subconscious reasoning(that he admitted to not understanding) for wanting to fight the Gundam.
@octoslut It goes to show you strategy and tactics can really make the difference. The gundam definitely out classed the Zaku Kai in every way however, I just like to point out that the Alex is made of a lunar titanium alloy and not gundarium. You're thinking of Gundam Wing.
@BlackDeathViral03 so true by far Bernie's one of my most favorite characters screw those seed, wing characters Bernie's more human and fleshed out more than all of them combined

I’ll never look at my burger the same way ever again... :’(
What?!?! Metal Gear...I mean Gundam!! It is so weird the first time I watched this OVA I never realized it was David Hayter who voiced Bernie, till I looked it up a year after I watched the OVA.
Thank you boss, WE LIVE AND DIE BY YOUR ORDER, BOSS!
ARGH METAL GEAR!?!?!?! IT CAN'T BE!
Snaaaaaake
"Hal, okay...listen carefully."

"Excuse me Hal....Colonel, what are your orders?"

Wish there were more gundam series like this
I hope Unicorn pay tribute to all these ova characters and the battles they fought
Sadly it isn’t
Go Watch Build fighters it makes them better and happily live after
You know, the thing I like the most about this beautiful OAV Series is that, unlike too many Gundam series, this show’s anti-war message is delivered through ACTUAL regular people and normal army officiers and they REMAIN this way until the very end.
I'm really annoyed that War in the Pocket hasn't been given a UK Blu Ray Release yet.
I just finished War in the pocket, and then this video just popped up in my recommendation :( Bernie
The bad thing is chris and Bernie didn't know who were they fighting
Turns out it just wasn't in the cards...
Late ass reply but he was probably planning on escaping to Zeon controlled territories after destroying the gundam, as such he had no intentions in turning himself in and relied on Al in doing this task for him.
OMG SOOOO SAD CRYING IM SORRY I CANT HELP MYSELF

I'm not crying, y'all are crying. Stop looking at me.

This is crazy
I never realized this
To me he sounded so different in MGS1
IF YOU HATE THIS OVA I HATE YOU OKAY

Bernie transforms into Kaz's Burgers😂
Basednard Wiseman
Me too :(
try not to cry
such a tragedy.
though Bernie lives in some g generation games. you can use him as a pilot xD
@boomstix
I agree with your first point to an extent.
BEEERRRRRNNNNIIIEEEEEE!!!!
bernie died a tragic death...sigh..
Ya it never came out here to to copy right issues however there is an fan translation out there. Though it's old in several other games you can save Bernie too. :D Normally he does end up with Chris as her boyfriend. >D
why is everyone saying this is metal gear? i dont see it.
The guy who voices Bernie is the same man who voices Solid snake
omg seriously??????????????????/ THATS INSANE OMGGGGG
Orange Fender
Yup ikr lol
David Hayter himself
THATS SO FUCKING AMAZING DUDE!

@octoslut
I don't see how Chris "relied" on the Gundam.
@@Ginga haha a generation replies to a generation
@@ducanhluu2697 It's all good man. I've always found the term "ace" a bit subjective. If on-screen kills determine ace status, there might not be as many normal human aces compared to Newtype/Enhanced aces in the Gundam franchise. If we base it on pure skills and general reputation though, there were dozens. Three of my favorites were 08th MS Team's Norris Packard, 008's Anavel Gato and Zeta's Yazan Gable.
Bernie was most definitely a legend. Made a friend, taught the kid some valuable life lessons and did his best to complete his mission.
because he fights for zeon
at the same time he doesn't want "innocent" people die
@octoslut
I never said Bernie was a bad pilot but he sure as hell wasn't a good one. The guy was a green rookie who got shot down on his first mission. Yes, his Zaku was inferior to the Alex but Bernie simply didn't have the piloting skills to prolong the battle.
@dchris1990
Have you watched this video? Bernie didn't want to do what you suggested because it would have been the easy way out. He said he didn't want to avenge his unit but finishing the mission for them had to have played in part in his subconscious reasoning(that he admitted to not understanding) for wanting to fight the Gundam.
@octoslut It goes to show you strategy and tactics can really make the difference. The gundam definitely out classed the Zaku Kai in every way however, I just like to point out that the Alex is made of a lunar titanium alloy and not gundarium. You're thinking of Gundam Wing.
@BlackDeathViral03 so true by far Bernie's one of my most favorite characters screw those seed, wing characters Bernie's more human and fleshed out more than all of them combined
rip
Metal Gear?!?
nobody hates this ova they mate hate almost everything of gundam even the original but never this ova.
