I use the SurfCo Hot Grip wax mat out of Hawaii. I really like it and have used it in SoCal in 60-78 degree water on two different boards in everything from 2'-8'. I love not having to use wax, but you have to know exactly where your hands are going to be for duck diving as well as when you pop up to make sure you cover all the areas you use. They are sold on Amazon for different styles of boards.
I’m actually working on a project of removing these pads from a surfboard I bought that had them already installed. Just like any other grip material, it tears you up. Within one hour of surfing, I had what felt like a major sunburn on my rib cage. I called it a day and quit surfing. The next day, my whole rib cage that was in contact with the board, in the paddling position, was scabbed up like road rash. It’s horrible.
I applied this stuff to 2 of my boards and ended up removing it. It was ok while wearing a wetsuit and boots but in warmer weather it ripped skin off my knees and feet when I had no protection. The manufacturers money back guarantee is bullshit. Yeah they answered my emails and asked for a receipt but then they conveniently (for them) never responded.

Dont the botties give you extra grip. What would it be like surfing bare foot?

This Van Der wal #1.0 is the same stuff you can buy a Roll at any good hardware store. AKA its Bathtub traction tape.
