But I would think having some sort of “bury the hatchet” moment could be worth quite a bit if they can have that experience between one another.
Prime Wanderlei was the scariest dude in MMA. His presence, especially in those days, really had you believing he was capable of murdering a man on live television with no remorse.
Especially in the (I think 2nd) Rampage match, where wanderlei just opened up with all those knees and Jackson just fell through the ropes with his face all bloody. Actually terrifying.

I remember Rampage Jackson talking about walking in Japan and seeing his 'nemesis' Wanderlei Silva and his team. Quinton admitted he was scared, but he couldn't walk away because he would look like a p*ssy, so he walked up to him instead. Wanderlei smiled at Quinton, reached in his pocket and pulled out some gum and offered a piece to Rampage. Rampage took it and for a moment they weren't rivals, but instead just two guys chewing gum in a parking lot. That story always stuck with me. Another is when Charles 'Crazy Horse' Bennett stormed into the Chute Boxe locker room in Pride and sucker punched Wanderlei (Stories vary), supposedly knocking him out. As filming starts, the Chute Boxe BJJ coach got Bennett on the ground and while they could have easily stomped the guy out as a team, instead they let the coach choke him out with a triangle, IIRC.
They said crazy horse knocked him out, and then the coaches told him “cool, no you’re ready for the fight”, then he managed to beat Ricardo Arona, which had beaten him before and was the biggest rivalry during the pride era (Chuteboxe vs BTT). And yeah the Jiujitsu coach put krazy horse to sleep with a triangle, you can see that on TH-cam lmao

I was a 5 or 6yo kid when I first watched Wanderlei Fight, it was his iconic and bloody Meca Fight. My father and my uncle would reunite in my grandmother house where we would stay up until 2-3am to watch what in that time was called Vale-Tudo. I would always fall asleep very early in the night and then wake up with the noise when Wanderlei fight started. Cachorro Louco - Mad Dog is what he was called in Portuguese back then. I can honestly say that this guy, this very one person that I never met in person, inspired and shaped my life absurdly, since watching fight since then to training jiu jitsu and much more. I don't even know why I'm writing this, man I'm emotional.
W Silva was such a beast you new fans don’t remember the brutal savagery pride days where he was wrecking guys including a prime solid Rampage. Respect to the legend 👏
True legend of the sport . Silva was an amazing champion and fought anyone who would stand accross the ring , or cage . I'm glad he did finally as I didn't want to see him at that point in his career take another loss especially after his last one . He got stopped with strikes and I dont want to see that happen. Always one of my favorite fighters of all time and never had a boring fight. Great episode Chale as always !
Wanderlei Silva during his last couple of fights in Pride, and first few in the UFC is when I became an MMA fan. He was ELECTRIFYING! Sadly his UFC career was less than exciting. Still he he a part of the pioneering generation of MMA!
Wanderlei .........Back in his days in Pride , his fights were some of the best fights I had ever seen. In his prime , he was an absolute killer! Have to give him huge props on the career he has had!
I trained incredibly hard as an athlete in school. When school was over I became a drug addict rather quickly. Those endorphins are near impossible to replace….Luckily I only spent a couple years in it before I found my true purpose.
I legit didn’t know he retired. He was my fav fighter from like 2002-2006. Such a destroyer and then in 2014 he went kinda crazy and just left his career fizzle out. Everyone throws around the word too much but Wanderlei is an absolute legend.
A good opponent makes you a better competitor, a great nemesis makes you a better man. Thank you, Mr. Sonnen, for showing both your respect and your heart.
it saddens me many people nowadays see wandy the way i used to see tank abbott. people need to respect the guys of the sport even if they arent on top when we personally started watching. i feel like the sport exploded in popularity as his career was declining. this man fought hunt, KO'd rampage twice, went undefeated like 20 fights in a row and that includes rampage, hendo, crop cop etc. true savage in his prime.
This was great, Chael. I liked the part about Anderson Silva’s two boys looking at you and then looking away. I can totally see that. I hope you and your family are doing fine. Thank you for what you gave to us fans.
Ide say this rivalry was one of the rare actual real rivalries, they did not like each other. As real as the heat was , so is the respect. Chael doesn't even try to hide it and that is sheer class. So is the fact that due ro (language barrier) few things some of the public percieved wandy as dumb etc and chael has stuck up for him. Or explaining why he didnt piss test and all that. Its like Chael knows he takes the trash talk to levels that most never exactly get over it, so he understands not getting compliments back but he still shows some love. :)

I'm trying to get some eyes on us, make some money. You like always come out with some down right inspirational and very honorary words. Well played sir well played
Hearing chael talk about the sport in general sometimes is more refreshing than when he talks about UFC storylines.
Frank Shamrock, and Wanderlei Silva are my all time favorites. They were my fighting heros in the in mid to late 1990's
I followed him from the start in Pride FC... magic times.
Wanderlei .........Back in his days in Pride , his fights were some of the best fights I had ever seen. In his prime , he was an absolute killer!
Have to give him huge props on the career he has had!
Wanderlei will always be the most intimidating fighter I've ever seen. He's terrifying.
Hope Wanderlei takes nicely this piece from Chael. Life is beautiful! I'm Brazilian born and currently serving in The US Army. Grateful!
I can’t let you get close!
Wanderlei silva was my favorite fighter growing up in Pride he was absolutely relentless and scary!!! Always entertaining and game.
Silva is a true bull!!! Legendary combat fighter
To this day that clip/scene still cracks me up "I can't let you get close"
I trained incredibly hard as an athlete in school. When school was over I became a drug addict rather quickly. Those endorphins are near impossible to replace….Luckily I only spent a couple years in it before I found my true purpose.
Chael's Bellator interview with Wandy was hilarious! "It looks like you're streaming from a bathroom at a homeless shelter for men in Rio."
The axe murderer retires,
A career better than most.
A will full of fire,
You can let him get close.
Chael, in many ways you are the most respectful MMA Competitor I have ever seen. Class act right here
Wanannowwananow
I legit didn’t know he retired. He was my fav fighter from like 2002-2006. Such a destroyer and then in 2014 he went kinda crazy and just left his career fizzle out. Everyone throws around the word too much but Wanderlei is an absolute legend.
When Rampage said Wanderlei Silva was his toughest opponent that said alot thanks for the memories a TRUE WARRIOR
The love and respect Chael has for Wanderlei is a real thing
So cool hearing you talk about Silva like that after all you’ll went through. Awesome.
Respect 2 chael n Silva. Ur 1 of my favorites around the sport. The respect u just shown 4 a bitter rival is commendable
A good opponent makes you a better competitor, a great nemesis makes you a better man. Thank you, Mr. Sonnen, for showing both your respect and your heart.
was my favorite fighter for years..have almost all of his fights on DVD.Wand,Hendo,Randy,Fedor,Igor!!! lots of old legends!! Thanks Chael!!
Wow, beautiful send of speech. Very respectful and full of admiration for an old nemesis it safe to say partner.
“I can’t let you get close.”
-Thee Wisest Man
That’s some awesome advice your step dad offered about your kids keeping at it - training, practicing, showing up everyday- no matter what.
it saddens me many people nowadays see wandy the way i used to see tank abbott.
people need to respect the guys of the sport even if they arent on top when we personally started watching.
i feel like the sport exploded in popularity as his career was declining.
this man fought hunt, KO'd rampage twice, went undefeated like 20 fights in a row and that includes rampage, hendo, crop cop etc.
true savage in his prime.
This was great, Chael. I liked the part about Anderson Silva’s two boys looking at you and then looking away. I can totally see that.
I hope you and your family are doing fine. Thank you for what you gave to us fans.
The biggest rivalry in the world of fighting sports without a doubt !
Love the sneak diss at Wanderlei ‘wan now wan now’ Silva calling him an “old” nemesis. And Chael I agree wanderlei is as old as time himself
Wanderlei: I'm retiring from MMA
Chael: i can't let you close
You're getting up there in years bro. How much longer for you? Respect!!
Chael even beat Silva to retirement.
Always undefeated.
The Bad Guy turns face, zigs instead of zagging, and supports his nemesis. Beautiful.
