NYC school leaders cannot fire almost any tenured teacher due to the absurd union contract and section 3020-a of the State Education Law. They just re-assign, and sometimes have them sit in rooms all day, doing nothing, but drawing a paycheck...even teachers accused of crimes. The due process required, multiple hearings, union paid attorneys, neutral arbiters agreed on by both sides can take years. All the while, teacher is suspended with pay or "reassigned." It's a joke.
I agree. No more tenure, immunity, etc. for all protected occupations . Politicians, law enforcement, teachers school board administration etc. and no more tax dollars used by any government employee to pay for funding their defense or paying a settlement. The individual made the decision to do whatever they did to put themselves in their position. So the individual should pay for the decision that the individual made.
Remove the principle and still pay him salary. Is this a mockery. This head of education should be forced to resign.

The NYC public educator class are the most unfireable people on the planet - its a pure pension farm operation [kind of like turnpikes]. I can't remember how long ago it was [maybe two decades?] that a piece was done exposing all that happened to the incompetent & dangerous was basically... permanent coffee break. They would be sequestered from students in their own space and that was it. Teachers unions are a huge factor, so think about the mechanics of a contract for a moment. Teachers? No access to administrative requests on all sorts of issues - that's "collective bargaining" held by union officials. The counterparty in negotiations? School board [and maybe a peek by city council because of budgets]. Neither of these parties [union or school board] will set foot in any classroom except on a walk-through basis, and neither will ever teach. But the totally invisible group is parents & their student children - they get sequestered to school board meetings, which are generally scheduled outside a union negotiations window... which locks them and their timely concerns out to make sure nothing ever changes. There isn't a more broken market on the planet: the service providers [teachers] are fully firewalled from customers [students] and yet money changes hands. I think its insane, as business models go - it can only be corrupt. The place for a man in the middle model is manufacturing using regional distributors - a shock absorber for local inventory fluctuations.
As Neal Boortz once put it: teachers unions are a greater threat to America than Al Qaeda.
Maybe learn to spell bureaucracy before you opine on the character of a public servant providing congressional testimony.

I watched a video telling the story of a young Jewish boy that was rounded up in Europe and held in a Nazi controlled concentration camp, a terrible story of the horrible sufferings of the people imprisoned in the camps, some of the most heinous brutal crimes that humans have ever perpetrated on millions of other humans. It wasn't so very long ago that these horrific things occurred. A few hundred thousand of the camp survivors are still alive with their terrible memories, and again they are having to experience and fear the painful words of anti-semitism being spoken today.

this is hard for me to grasp. ww2 ended in 1945. So the youngest survivor would be 80 now. Survivors less than 85 wouldnt remember. Survivors less than 90 would only remember from a little kids viewpoint. the number of survivors 90& up must be really small.... get real, cuz
So, you want to minimize the disdainful behavior? There are enough recent to very recently done interviews on youtube of holocaust survivors, so it isn't hard to imagine that given the couple of hundreds of thousands of people still alive that experience the likely impossible horrible memories to forget, quite a few might well be impacted by the recent expression of anti-semitism. Don't forget the children of such survivors, knowing well the traumas that their loved ones experienced. Look at the photos of the camps showing emaciated people, piles of rotting corpses, crematorium scenes with bodies still inside the ovens, you might even be impacted yourself.

I interpreted your statement to be expressing the opinion that assuming that there are currently few individuals still alive with their own direct and clearly remembered experience in the concentration camps to make them fearful, if not horrified of the re-emergence of heightened anti-semitic rhetoric, that what is now occurring in demonstrations and whatnot, is being injurious to a lesser degree. As the unrelenting post war nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal once said about the atrocities perpetrated against Jews in Europe, "The world has a moral obligation not to forget". The past illuminates the present.

The Superintendent gave quite reasonable testimony. What he said about the process to remove any employee is standard and removing him while that plays out is a standard process.

If these threats and this venomous hatred was aimed at black and/or Muslim students, the perpetrators would be held accountable immediately and face SEVERE consequences. Added to that, they would very likely face criminal charges as well. And everyone knows it. This is completely unacceptable.

First, having grown up in this part of Queens, I can assure you there are no Jewish students in Hillcrest HS for years already, and few Jewish teachers. While the Republican senators may be correct in there in their assessment that the NYC DOE is awash in progressive antisemitism, they are clearly grandstanding and posturing. They’d have more credibility if they had taken the time to understand how the disciplinary system works for DOE employees and why the Principal of Hillcrest HS can’t just be terminated.
Arrogant Banks obviously has a lot to hide and deflect away from as his answers are pathetic and he quickly becomes defensive and irascible.

I live in a 2 bed 1 bath shoebox rhey say is 975 sq ft which its actually about 750. 30 miles south of seattle paying 2200 a month. I deal with water coming up from foundation and mold and broken appliances while renting from a 4 bil rev company. This needs to be controlled. Im conservative. However apartment homes should have controls bur not be allowed to max out every year. My rent went up 40% 6 months ago. This is unnaceptable.

Education is necessary to reduce antisemitism, asian, black, indigent Indians, catholic, muslim, Buddha followers, etc. I realize that the public schools are meant to be religion free, but having the resources available would help tremendously. Most of our children have heard their families talk in a way that might screw their way of thinking and start hating to be ‘in’ the crowd.
