My dad when I'd catch a mistake of his and I'd call him out on it "oh, i was just practicing"! 😂🤣 miss you dad, its been a long 16 years since you passed 😥.
I KNOW THAT FEELING ALL TOO WELL. MORE TIMES THAN NONE ITS ALWAYS SOMETHING I KNOW MY FATHER WOULD KNOW RIGH OFF THE TOP OF HIS HEAD. THEN SIT HERE KNOWING THE ANSWER WAS A SIMPLE PHONE CALL. OR HE'D STOP BY AND RESOLVE EVEN SIMPLE ISSUES. SOMETIMES I FIND MYSELF REACHING FOR THE PHONE ONLY TO REALIZE HE'S GONE. DUDE IT REALLY SUCKS. LOSING MY MOST VALUABLE TEACHER. IF I HAD TO ASK MY MOTHER I'D GET THE WRONG ANWSER AFTER A MONTH OF HER PLAYING BLINDFOLDED IN A BLACK CAVE. THERE ARE SOME THINGS ONLY MY DAD COULD ANSWER. AND IF HE COULDN'T HE HAD SO MANY FRIENDS I ALWAYS GOT AN ANSWER. AND NOW THE PHONE NEVER RINGS UNLESS ITS SOMEBODY NEEDING MY HELP. WHICH I'D ALWAYS DROP WHAT I WAS DOING TO GO. IF I CALL THEM FOR HELP ITS ALWAYS A DICTIONARY OF EXCUSES. THEN WHEN THE DAY I'M GONE ITS GONNA BE THEY THE ONES DOING THE REGRETTING.
The pros I've seen always use ratchet straps (lots) to pull the frame members into PERFECT alignment and leave them on until the steel is affixed. At that point, when the ratchet straps are removed, the building stays in perfect alignment.
Great video ! Ive been thinking installing about one of these . Glad to see it's not as easy to assemble as other videos have shown . Thanks for the reality check, its going to help me plan my installation .
Well a quick week later there is a garage 😜 Funny thing is, it is amazing what you find when you start reading the directions 🤔 Make sure you give us an update on how it did next spring. 👍👍
It takes the pros 2 hours to assemble. I have watched many of these videos and the pros are awesome if site is level. They won't assemble if not level. I helped my brother build one last Saturday. Same runout issue due to not perfectly level. Took 8 hours but alot of dead time milling about etc. We gained 2 inches on one side due to level issue but you cant see it. Turned out great. The first roof panel on top is the most critical. Make sure overlaps are away from prevailing winds as well so rain doesnt blow into the seams.
About to put up a 12x20 three sided versa tube. I put 4 inches of stone down with a HD weed barrier underneath. Have plastic deck pads to set the floor tubes on.
Now you know how they go up the next one will be easy Peasy 😂😂. Goodness sake RTFM !( read the f.. Manual). Bet that was fun 😆😆. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and healthy 🇬🇧
I used to manufacture these tube and tin buldings. Your snow load is inadequate. Attach a 5/16 or larger cable across just below the bends of the legs. (triangulate the roof). It will triple your snow load. It should get you up to over 30 inches of snow. These things will collapse.
Was just reading through to see if anyone had beat me to warning him. Take Craig's warning serious. The snow won't slide with the steel run that direction.
I personally prefer the buildings with the purlins and girts, with the tin running in the correct direction. Versatube does make some pretty good garage kits.
Thanks for the great video! I was contemplating building my own, but I know there is a slight pitch on my concrete driveway. Perhaps I should leave it to the pros.
Thanks for the video. Im probably going to order a 12-20-7 today and your info on the guts and the glory are greatly appreciated, I think you mentioned your in Minn. as am I, small world 8+}
Build it square n level then jack one end 3 inch for runoff. Have floor rails on blocks to prevent rust. Use screw in anchors bolted to floor rails every corner then pin with half inch rebar every 4 feet.
We hired a company that does many of these everyday. I watched 3 workers put up our 18x21 with 2 roll up garage doors from 7pm to 11pm 100% complete. Then I watched this video and I could see that it’s not easy if you’ve never done it or watched someone do it before. First thing they expected before they got to ours was a flat surface and electrical since they ac powered screw guns. Second thing they did was checked the level made adjustments and spiked it it. From there they took off. Lists of little tricks along the way I just noticed and it was common sense to them. Ours cost about $4000 for everything including labor.
Yep, lol, the saying around here is you'll never see it from I-80, David I see that you and I would put things together wrong and have fun doing it, lol have a great week!!!
👍💪.. Dang it David. The only people that i know of that never make mistakes sit in momies basement and rag on people in the comment section. Ooof Daa..
and, yeah, level the pad and plumb each support and hold the frame all level and plumb before you start to sheet it. Just like building a house. But thanks for sharing with us. I've got my first metal carport on order and will be doing this.
Just found your channel, how is that versatube structure doing with snow load with only a 3:12 pitch those buildings have? BTW enjoyed the loggingand cabin vids. I am thinking of getting the versatube for my property in Marrinette
Glad you enjoy them. We had a lot of snow last winter.. for northern Minnesota. The ribs on the roof do not allow the snow to slide off which I don't care for. I have 2 of them and I've never shoveled them off. A month ago I did put a heavy ratchet strap across from the center top of one wall to the other just in case to give it more strength.
Whats the brand name of that carport? And what is the rated snow load? Im going to buy a 12x20 but I'm worried about too much snow and it falling on my Porsche.
Nice Thursday morning funnies, good job David and hopefully it can handle your snow load with no collar tie bracing, would hate to see it collapse on the boat and is that a 67 galaxie?. Cheers
Hi Dave!!😀😀 I thought I would be the only one having that many troubles. LOL! What store did you get it from? I need to get on for a woodshed for next year. Glad to see you got it done!!😀😀 Take care my friend!!😀😀👍👍 Logger Al
@@lewiemcneely9143 :) Yes Lewie, I could actually use about 3 or 4 of them. I was going to just build a lean to shed over my stove and wood pile. But it never got built this year again. I've needed some type of shed for about 20 years and still haven't gotten one built. I've gotten by all these years without so I figured I will make it another. LOL!! One of those would go up quick compared to the shed I would like to build. The only difference is I have everything except the steel for the roof and the screws and a few bolts for it. Just a lot more work.
@@aldredske6197 Hard to be at 2 places at the same time. Logging is a full time job as I understand it. Ours is around 10x12-ish but we farmed it out. I'm an operator and not a builder. You'll get yours before long. Get David to come erect a few 4 U! Till then, tarps still work fine! Take care, Buddy!
As the famous line from a movie goes... "we don't need no stinking instructions"... well, with a slight change anyway... Hahaha... Ok, so you have just given us "real men" a bad image by saying you read the directions... (Even if you did read them, don't tell everyone that you did)... hahaha... Looks great.
Looks to me like you were using the typical truck driver attitude FIDO...(f*ck it drive on) Destructions? We don't need no damn destructions! Measuring opposite corner to corner will keep you square for the bases. Don't need level so much because the frost is going to push it anyway. But, it's up! lol. I would be afraid that the Minnesooota winter snow load will be a problem on that structure. I had one collapse here in Pa, and we don't get anywhere near the snow you guys get. Gonna have to keep it shoveled off David!!!!
Had a greenhouse (10x20) collapse here in NC from a snow (if you want to call a heavy frost up there, snow) but it'll have to do something severe. When it's worth trying to build it's worth overbuilding a LOT!
I'm astounded. I never figured anyone could take something as simple as an erector set and make it so difficult. Congrats Dave! I really don't mind if you do it right the first time. I won't be offended. lol!
BTW, you're way to hard on yourself. These can be a pain to assemble even if you're a genius. Actually a genius wouldn't, he'd pay someone because they could never deal with the reality. Theory yes, reality no!
I built one like this so that the mice and squirrels could have a nice carport to overwinter in the engine compartment of my pickup truck and tractor.
Great Job there David I Really enjoy your sense of humor and pointing out things that can and will go wrong and how to fix them.
Thanks a Bunch
This is pretty much how every project I do goes. I watch a TH-cam video where someone does it in 10 minutes and then it takes me 10 days! 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 same here... I do it exactly how they do and anything and everything that could go wrong goes wrong
My dad when I'd catch a mistake of his and I'd call him out on it "oh, i was just practicing"! 😂🤣

With that full moon the gravitational pull was working against you leveling the building. Next time wait till a new moon.
Always remember and don’t ever forget, get everything Plumb, Level and Square before you tin up. And as my wife says, “Read the Destructions First”
Big daddy working alone. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲 You're brave. But I like that all tubing is crimped to fit. No tape duct tape needed.

It looked good from where I'm sitting but this is EXACTLY the main reason I RUN stuff instead of BUILD stuff! GBWYall!
Great video David dont sweat the small stuff instructions are for kneeling have a great day be safe.
You do things right because you do them twice.
Fun fun fun with menards great video David

You're right. I built another one 2 months ago. Went waaaaay better! Yes there is a video... lol
Dying to see how the rebar is used! I'm figuring it as tiedown anchors!
If you're happy, we're happy!

Hi David Merry Texmas have a day love from TEXAS
Corner to corner, pull your tape from inside corner to inside corner. It needs to be equidistant. Measure low. Pour some whiskey on it.
Erector sets are always fun.
Your a wild and crazy guy. But that's ok have a great day David.
All that matters is that you had fun
THE number 1 video to watch on how not to.
If things were meant to be square why was the earth made round?
Farmers do it better. Cuz we have so much experience dealing with and modifying stuff we need. 👍🏻🇺🇲
I feel your pain putting that up haha
You needed to SQUARE the BOTTOM Toooooooooooooo,,,, Lord help this man,,, Please,,,
Do your best, caulk the rest.
Caulk and trim. Maybe some more dirt and concrete.
Ever heard of the 3-4-5 triangle squaring method?
Yes sir
Are the roofing sheets not in the wrong direction for the snow to slide off?
Well David if all else fails read the instructions. You done good. Take care and GOD BLESS.
2nd this!
For me,
ALIGNMENT
Seems to be the most
Time staking ,
frustrating process
Before a major snow storm coming in a day.
Uh oh, look out.. Dave got the tool belt out..🤣
Real men don't need instructions cause we're just that good lol. A skyhook and a metal stretcher would have made things much easier...
Hey thanks for the video sorry you had to make the mistakes but now all of us will know lol...
But really I feel your pain as I'm watching the video

😂
Looks like a truly exasperating job!
This corner right? Now this corner is wrong!
Thank for how not to do it, I been looking at getting one myself
The best way to get it square
The way to make it square: Measure diagonally and make the two diagonal measures equal.
This is why you pay professionals a few $100 bucks to do it right the first time! They have seen every mistake and they do not make them now! HA HA😋
Are you applying the putty to seal the overlaps?
From sweden fortsätt det ä Bra
Ok and how do you bolt down the screw in to slab
Use wedge anchors
I don't think you need to tell us how many attempts you did to achieve this David, but was it 5? Still looked good in the end though.
Not that we're counting................
Ya done good though, built in under 20 minutes.... 18:42.... On what is normally a 6 to 8 hour build.
