    Two things: 1) If Isaac had a beard, he could be Sam's twin. Love that he was also learning. 2) ANGELA! You are so blessed to have a man who can admit his errors and learn from them.

    Very cool that you had Isaac to help you. I'll bet that made him feel very important. It was also very cool to let him see you admit you made the mistakes. That way he will know that if he makes mistakes, it's not the end of the world. You are a good dad Sam!!

    I was surprised to see a carport installed on piers. Having the tractor, I probably would have tried to do some grading, and then poured two continuous footers on flattened ground. I hope everything holds up with time.👍

    I think you spent a reasonable amount of time and effort getting it as good as you could. It looks fine to me. If it still bothers you, plant some boxwoods along the footings or box in the footings with metal siding.

    Honestly who cares if it is off a little. It’s a very nice carport and you will enjoy it even if it’s off. Plant some flowers around the ones that bug you so you can’t see the imperfections. Be proud of yourself and your accomplishments. As a past homeschool teacher I love it that you and Angela are not only doing the book part of learning but also hands on learning part. Your kids will be better prepared for life because you have taught them how to do things for themselves. Keep up the good work.

  • @mikewatson4644
    @mikewatson4644 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The carport looks good. The diagonal measurement being off is probably from the crew trying to adjust to keep the uprights from being off from the piers. With the anchoring holes being drilled 6" off from where you expected them to be, they probably "fudged" to keep the anchors in the piers as best as they could.
    Lots of unknowns and learning in this project. Don't beat yourself up. It's a carport, not a watch.
    Thanks for the video

    Thinking of ways to gussy it up...put box forms around the piers and add more concrete (may not stick well to old concrete) or fill in between piers with landscape timbers/railroad ties. Best option, level that ground up to top of piers with crushed stone/lime mix.

    • @mimiso2522
      @mimiso2522 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can use a bonding material to adhere the new concrete to the pillars.

    • @jeb3415
      @jeb3415 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was thinking the same thing… or what about doing those rock cages (Gabion basket) around the piers, maybe mortar in a layer of rock at the weak edges and ‘cheat’ the cages to give it all a centered look. Issac may need a calculator tho’, to help with that one! 😆

    I just finished building a 50’x60’ pole barn. I had several piers that were off a bit - a couple by quite a bit. It was my first time and I learned a ton. I got the building itself square but had a couple of poles that I didn’t plumb correctly and my fascia is a bit wavy. Lots of other mistakes made along the way. In the end, the building is sound and looks good. One of the things that I can share is that I learned a lot more from the mistakes than from the things I did correctly. Thanks for sharing. It takes a good man to admit that publicly and I just wanted to share that you aren’t alone

    Hey! This is a great learning experience for both of you.
    I made a similar mistake building my first deck. I had asked a friend for advice on digging the piers. Long story short, my take away was "8ft on centers". That's how I dig my concrete piers. When he came to look at my work, he asked what my thought process was, then informed me that only the inner piers are constructed that way. The outers have a shorter span.
    He ended up helping me build the thing, and with some clever positioning off the joists we avoided cutting down 10 foot lumber to make 8 footers 3 inches longer.
    He also made it a cantilever design and got me an extra 2 feet of depth.
    Thanks James!

    If you should want to do this again, I’d recommend setting the 4 corners and getting the box square, then setting the individual piers. The anchor bolt hole positions should have been called out on the plans. It’s best to have the columns on top of the piers to transfer the load correctly. Anyway, nice looking carport and kudos for showing that even dads can be wrong.

    I did this with a fence i put up at my first house, luckily I didnt pour any concrete for the posts so i could pull them all and reset. What a PIA. Doing it myself i fell off center on the first post and it multiplied so much that by the end post I wasn’t even close to the post with the panel. Kinda stinks that those tubes are so large and permanent but they still work. Just be glad you didnt wet set any brackets into the posts.

    Great job anyway, it came out great and rust free from being installed on the ground. Glad also that the roof panels are running up and down. The other type that run horizontal is cheaper but comes with the disadvantage that leafs will be stuck, not be able to run off and create a leaf pile and eventually rust and leak. Great choice.

  • @byte-my-bits

    This is amazing! I hadn't considered lining up the piers with the legs - I am not making piers 4 ft subterrain but did plan on driving earth achors between piers. Also my carport is only half this size. I feel so much more confident about this project now having seen it done and turn out even better than I envisioned. I actually was starting to make some design changes due to my trepidations I was looking into composite footing pads and precast and composite piers or posts and I'm really relieved to know that my original plan will suffice. It was a pleasure seein this I'm gonna go ahead and sub with the idea that great minds think alike!

    You probably won’t see this; however, here goes. no complaints from me. I’m just a youtube lander anyway. Just want to suggest you find a way to block any openings in the metal to keep out hornets and the like from nesting. I’m assuming the posts are hallow. Awesome carport. I’m sure it will be super useful to you. Thank you for sharing your time with us.

  • @effthegop
    @effthegop ปีที่แล้ว

    I have installed 3 of these and I know that there is a lot of "slack" when sliding the components together. They are pretty simple on a flat pad because you can build each section on top of the first one to use as a template. I did a 25x25 last summer on a gravel area but I leveled the whole area first to make it easier. Even when all your components are close to perfect, getting it square can be tough. You need to really pay attention and get the first panel on perfectly. Like not even a sixteenth off. At 20', that 1/16 turns into 1.25"

    Whether it's a picture frame or a building foundation, most videos I watched show measuring just the diagonals to ensure the frame is in the shap of a square or rectangle. It does not ensure the inclusive anges are 90º. That is just one check but not complete. If the shape of your frame is like a rhombus, the diagonals will be equal but the lengths of opposing sides will not be equal and the inclusive angles will not be 90º. If the shape of the frame is like a parallogram, the lengths of the opposing sides will be equal but the diagonals will not be equal and the inclusive angles will not be 90º. Therefore, you must take SIX measurments for your carport - side to side (front and back), front to back ( left side and rigjt side), then the diagonals.

    Next time you use tube forms, get the tubes exactly in place fastened to a form board. Then lock them there by backfilling with some decomposed granite. It compresses really well, just pouring it in the hole around the tube. Mine didn't move a bit when I filled them up with the concrete pump hose. You can drill some new holes through the frame into the pier and add another concrete anchor, to get one nearer the center of the pier.
