I for one enjoy watching women's football, they are talented and elegant, but also tough. Our girls won the Euros by playing up a storm against the USA. The men haven't won anything for years and play like wet spaghetti!!
This show now mainly focuses on minority sport. I suspect that’s in part because the BBC don’t have rights to most mainstream and wouldn’t have much they could show. It used to be a big event for me, now I don’t even know when it’s on. I have nothing against any of the winners, even if I haven’t heard of many. They are all champions in their own field. It probably attracts a different audience now so it’s the same in name but not much else. Times change you just have to go with the flow. Take it or leave it, your choice. Simon has made his and I don’t disagree.
it's that problem again of Fitzpatrick being involved in a sport which is not covered by BBC. BBC always has to tell the public that the sport they are showing is superior - usually they portray it as being more diverse etc. I agree with Simon that the programme has become less worthwhile over the years and imo the main reason is that BBC lost most of the sports coverage and were biased towards what little sport they still had. Add to that the presenters aren't very good now and we see so much sport, interviews etc that the programme can't offer us anything new that we can't see elsewhere.

Well around 12 million people watched England in the 2019 world cup semi final, where Beth assisted Englands goal and came second in assists at that world cup. She was shortlisted for England's player of the year that year too. So i reckon it's a fair few.
If people throw the word "woke" round all the time it suddenly becomes meaningless. Last year's winner was a worthy winner, top scorer, best player, winner of Euro. Surely she deserves recognition for that
I don’t watch it anymore and can’t imagine me watching it ever again. I record Match of the day so I can fast forward any bits Lineker is in. Fitzpatrick winning the US Open was a great fete.
Simon has highlighted issues I feel the same. used to love and diarised the programme from 60’s but stopped about 7 years ago. The key word is ‘Personality’ not just the very best. We had some incredible personalities like Botham or Thompson or Ali! As SJ says the event itself was interesting interviews and good banter. Also the audience and fans seemed to have wider variation so the paper and radio used to open up options for potential winners for months before and at the local pub there were debates! Now it’s fairly closed and limited to 6 potential winners and only voted for those 6 from a limited panel. Matt Fitzpatrick loss of the potentials was a glaring miss and he has good personality as well! No disrespect to Beth Mead who deserved to be recognised.
Tbh the last time I watched it was in 2000,when Sir Stephen Redgrave and our Sydney 2000 Olympians were honoured and there was a special award for Mohammed Ali. No disrespect to this year's winners from here either.
Its just about box ticking now, no disrespect to the winners , but fury has been the winner of this in the people's Eyes for years , in achievements maby , but if you are to go on the title and point of this award in the first place he is heavyweight champion in personality by miles
Fury decided that he doesn't want to be on the list cause he said he doesn't need a trophy to recognise that he is a "sports personality of the year", and that he knows who he is and what he has achieved and come back from, and that he doesn't need an award to show it
I remember years ago they gave it to Nicola Adams instead of Carl Froch... for people who don't know boxing, Froch was unified champion, Adams won an amatuer competition...
Simon, viewing figures will be what ever the BBC want them to be. This used to be a do not miss program, now, who cares. Get rid of Lineker, Balding and Scott and that would be an improvement, to start with.
It doesn't matter what the viewing figures are. The BBC still get their license fee even if you don't watch it. The only way to change the BBC is to scrap the license fee.
What an insult... Beth Who! Now joins past winners like Daley Thompson, Nick Faldo, John Curry , Sebastian Coe ,Ian Botham Fatima Whitbread. True British and world sporting icons....This was once the most prestigious Award a Sportsman could ever hope to receive ...
I'm astonished by people complaining that it's the bbc 'ramming women's football down our throats'....it was a fantastic achievement witj the lionesses winning the euros in the summer! What do people expect? I'm not really a follower of women's football personally, but was not in the least bit surprised that it was celebrated and highly deserved the award.
Surley Tom stoltman a shout the worlds strongest man and Eddie Hall was defo a personality but the real winner should be osulivan or fury but iknow fury wants nothing to do with the bbc and rightly so
I literally gave up on watching BBC Sports personality of the Year years ago. For me I find it a little bit rigged. While it's good that more & more women are getting acknowledged for their sporting achievements I find it baffling that Ronnie O'Sullivan didn't win it. For me he should of.
I haven't watched match of the day for over 10 years the BBC kill every sport there appears to be sod all on. I can remember growing up watching SportsNight with Harry Carpenter brilliant fights on the BBC in the late 70s early 80s.
All the live sports coverage used to be on BBC are lone gone. Remember F1, golfs open championship, Autumn international rugby, big Horse racing meetings like the grand National, Royal Ascot, the defunct BDO darts World Championship, Moto GP, French open Tennis.
Even England internationals aren't on BBC anymore apart from when it's a tournament, the last competitive England game on the BBC that wasn't at a tournament was England 2-3 Croatia in Euro 2008 qualifying
So the BBC Killed SPOTY and Dr Who with this equality obsession, The 3rd best sports personality of the year is a las who sweeps ice,I am feeling very old and out of date lol
As a golf Professional by trade for Fitz to be ignored after such an achievement t is a disgrace ….whether he wins it or not is inconsequential but to not even be in the mix is a joke…..not just what he won it’s the way he won it and conducted himself above all else.
Spot on SJ I think it’s a reflection of the BBC rather than the concept of awarding top sports people for each year It’s too political, too many agendas by the BBC
I watch them both. Gary Lineker is a better commentator than Simon. He has a sense of humour for a start, but more importantly he knows more about football. Simon comes across as slightly bitter, when speaking about rivals. I thought he was better than that.
O'Sullivan & Ben Stokes didn't even care of about it, you could tell! Stokes didn't even bother to hold his 2nd place trophy up on screen until he was prompted to do so by Lineker! He wasn't arsed, and I think he did that deliberately! 🤣
As far as I'm concerned, the only candidate who ticked both categories a) sportsperson & b) personality was Ronnie O Sullivan. The rest are dull as dishwater.
Of England had won the World Cup this would have caused some issues for SPOTY as it would have been certain that they won everything with Harry Kane winning Personality. I wonder what they’d have done then… but England’s men didn’t, nor did they win the Euros. The women did, beating Germany. Beth Mead was a nailed on winner and deserves it.
Not even a mention of Leon Edwards who pulled off the biggest upset of the year and became the welterweight champ, Same with Michael Bisping who became middleweight champ and the first British ufc champion ever.

I still have no idea who won it. And I've seen a photo of the woman who reportedly won it
Who is she, what does she do.. Netball? Rugby union? ..haven't the foggiest?

This show now mainly focuses on minority sport. I suspect that’s in part because the BBC don’t have rights to most mainstream and wouldn’t have much they could show. It used to be a big event for me, now I don’t even know when it’s on. I have nothing against any of the winners, even if I haven’t heard of many. They are all champions in their own field. It probably attracts a different audience now so it’s the same in name but not much else. Times change you just have to go with the flow. Take it or leave it, your choice. Simon has made his and I don’t disagree.
I was surprised Fitzpatrick wasn't on the nominees list.
He'd have won it in a heartbeat if he was trans or gay.
Wins US open ! not nominated ?
it's that problem again of Fitzpatrick being involved in a sport which is not covered by BBC.
Mat is a straight white male , and we all know how the BBC feel about them ,
What about the number one golfer in the world?
Ronnie should of won. But to not even vs top 3 is disgusting. Stokes has done amazing and to me was the other top pick. All seems a bit fixed to me, congratulations to Beth Mead on her achievements though
*should have
He’s not squeaky clean, him, furry etc love to drink, party and say controversial comments which the bbc etc hate
Snooker isn’t a sport
Why do you think he didn’t even bother showing up? He went to Dubai with his family for a reason. Not gonna waste his time when he’ll just be ignored
To be fair Beth Mead won a top prize in their field. Women’s football is crap, but you can’t say she wasn’t a worth winner.
Ronnie O'Sullivan. 46-year-old world champion. What more does this man have to do to win this thing?
Start playing a sport...
@@mintywebb shut up much sport as golf and look up definition it’s not athlete it’s sports personality sport is also about competition and skilll not just physical plonker

Be a woman.
Ronnie not winning is a joke. Him not making the top 3 is a bigger joke.
how many times did you vote?
@@goebbels1938 once
It's a joke that Leon Edwards didn't get nominated for winning the UFC Welterweight title, like Bisping when he won the middleweight title in 2016 but Ronnie O'Sullivan should have won it, mind-blowing that he's never even finished in the Top 3
How many people, outside of the euros this summer, have ever seen Beth Mead play in a match?
I thought football ( men & womens ) was a TEAM game - didn't realise one player could win a tournament on their own !!!!!!
Well around 12 million people watched England in the 2019 world cup semi final, where Beth assisted Englands goal and came second in assists at that world cup. She was shortlisted for England's player of the year that year too.
So i reckon it's a fair few.
I’m not talking about the fair weather fans who will watch tournaments and then not bother with football for the rest of the year.
She's had a great season at arsenal who themselves have a huge following
@@blueeggnog Are they drawing 60k fans every week?
I would say why Fitzpatrick or O'Sullivan didn't win it but we're not allowed. I think any normal person knows why though.
The last time I remember the Sports Personality actually meaning something was when Freddie Flintoff won it, and that was 17 years ago in 2005.
As a ufc/mma fan I was surprised Leon Edwards didn't get on the shortlist

I stand to be corrected but back in the day i am sure you could vote for whom ever you liked not dictated to by so called experts.
SPOTY has become a woke joke.
It's nearly as ridiculous as A Question of Sport.
Neither shows have ever been good.
Do you know what woke means?
If people throw the word "woke" round all the time it suddenly becomes meaningless. Last year's winner was a worthy winner, top scorer, best player, winner of Euro. Surely she deserves recognition for that
No Tyson Fury - says it all!
The only two personalities were Ronnie and Stokesy.
Outdated along with MOTD. Highlights are on TH-cam 30mins after the game, who’s waiting till 10:30pm to watch highlights?
Haven't done for years.
“It’s a load of old clap trap”
They should schedule it to follow the Eurovision song contest; then I know not to turn on the TV that day.
Apparently, Roy Keane was one of the voting panel. He voted for Gary Neville...'cos "I've got to show loyalty to my teammates!".
Ronnie and Ben Stokes have engaging personalities. They should of won it

Very happy for Beth Mead, think she's excellent and a worthy winner. However, not having Leon Edwards and Matt Fitzpatrick on the list is a joke.
Ronnie O'sullivan 7 world titles
I don’t watch it anymore and can’t imagine me watching it ever again. I record Match of the day so I can fast forward any bits Lineker is in. Fitzpatrick winning the US Open was a great fete.
Feat
Didn't know it was on and didn't tune in. Didn't miss this programme or the BBC.
@@rjjcms1 👍BBC had a different level of sport personalities at that time…🤣
@@bluecarefreeforever Yes,it'd be hard to find more unique and brilliant sports personality than Ali.
@@rjjcms1 Our 2012 olympians were also honoured
Its just about box ticking now, no disrespect to the winners , but fury has been the winner of this in the people's
Eyes for years , in achievements maby , but if you are to go on the title and point of this award in the first place he is heavyweight champion in personality by miles
Fury decided that he doesn't want to be on the list cause he said he doesn't need a trophy to recognise that he is a "sports personality of the year", and that he knows who he is and what he has achieved and come back from, and that he doesn't need an award to show it
Used to be great, not so much now. Would say that some recognition to Kevin Sinfield would have been good on this segment. Truly Inspirational bloke.
He finished 2nd in 2015 behind Andy Murray
I remember years ago they gave it to Nicola Adams instead of Carl Froch... for people who don't know boxing, Froch was unified champion, Adams won an amatuer competition...
Olympic gold, but I get your point. She is black, a woman and gay, so ticks far too many boxes for those pricks to ignore.
I didn't even know it was still on to be honest.
Leon edwards should have been up for a vote atleast
Simon, viewing figures will be what ever the BBC want them to be. This used to be a do not miss program, now, who cares. Get rid of Lineker, Balding and Scott and that would be an improvement, to start with.
It doesn't matter what the viewing figures are. The BBC still get their license fee even if you don't watch it. The only way to change the BBC is to scrap the license fee.
Great review of the BBC Pride of Britain Awards there Simon🙌👏
Mead wasn't interested either. She dressed like she was going down the shops for a pint of milk.
I don't watch it either, it's pathetic virtue signalling 😡
I'm astonished by people complaining that it's the bbc 'ramming women's football down our throats'....it was a fantastic achievement witj the lionesses winning the euros in the summer! What do people expect? I'm not really a follower of women's football personally, but was not in the least bit surprised that it was celebrated and highly deserved the award.
Johnny Bairstow should have been a nominee and should have won!
Surley Tom stoltman a shout the worlds strongest man and Eddie Hall was defo a personality but the real winner should be osulivan or fury but iknow fury wants nothing to do with the bbc and rightly so
Agree on stoltman, but fury hasn't done anything this year.
Why can’t you have sportsman and sportswoman of year, because if a woman gets it undeserved, then men missing out because of inclusiveness
Very good point
If the bbc have input on changes Shamima Begum will win it next year
All the live sports coverage used to be on BBC are lone gone.
Clare Baldin will make someone a fabulous husband one day, he's a great man.
😂😂😂😂
How Ronnie O'Sullivan hasn't won it is beyond me.
Because he has a personality. Isnt some Ingsoc clone
Speaking facts Simon
So the BBC Killed SPOTY and Dr Who with this equality obsession, The 3rd best sports personality of the year is a las who sweeps ice,I am feeling very old and out of date lol
As a golf Professional by trade for Fitz to be ignored after such an achievement t is a disgrace ….whether he wins it or not is inconsequential but to not even be in the mix is a joke…..not just what he won it’s the way he won it and conducted himself above all else.
Politics
Curling got in top 6 !!! it’s a joke these days it doesn’t really carry any meaning.
What about the number one golfer in the world?
Spot on SJ
I think it’s a reflection of the BBC rather than the concept of awarding top sports people for each year
It’s too political, too many agendas by the BBC
The fact that Fury hasn’t won it says it all.
quite frankly anything on tv that as gary lineker hosting it is enough for me to change channels man could talk a glass eye to sleep
Clare Balding and Gary Linekar. I don't need any other reason NOT to watch it.
As far as I'm concerned, the only candidate who ticked both categories a) sportsperson & b) personality was Ronnie O Sullivan. The rest are dull as dishwater.
What is this BBC of which you speak?
It's the whole BBC not just sports personality that's out dated and needs to go
Of England had won the World Cup this would have caused some issues for SPOTY as it would have been certain that they won everything with Harry Kane winning Personality. I wonder what they’d have done then… but England’s men didn’t, nor did they win the Euros. The women did, beating Germany. Beth Mead was a nailed on winner and deserves it.
Beth who?
Not even a mention of Leon Edwards who pulled off the biggest upset of the year and became the welterweight champ, Same with Michael Bisping who became middleweight champ and the first British ufc champion ever.
Apparently next year’s favourites are Gary Glitter, Elton John and Eddie Izzard
You are forgetting an outsider called Harold Shipman
Don.t forget Jimmy savell
They may as well be
@Robert Howe
He can't win it as its a conflict of interest for the BBC, He is there mascot and much loved and most missed celebrity
