We just bought our first dehydrator this week. My husband has been watching TH-cam videos about dehydrating. He told me about a video that popped up on his recommended list...the woman was clear, concise and explained reasons for doing things a certain way. I told him that it sounds like a lady I'm subscribed to, who explains the science behind pressure canning. He sent me this link and I laughed! Yup, it was Pam from RoseRed homestead. Thank you for passing along the correct way to do things. Husband is already talking about saving for a freeze dryer.
Fair warning if you make home made beef, or pork Jerky you will never be able to go back to that greasy, disgusting, garbage they sell in stores, and don't even think of stock piling it.... It won't last that long.
We had a huge garden when I was growing up in Wisconsin. My dad would freeze well washed 1/2 gallon milk cartons and freeze a bunch of ice blocks leading up to canning/blanching season. My mom would scrub and sanitize her kitchen sink, fill the sink nearly full and put in a block of ice. Ice cubes could never keep up. My parents were a real team. They gardened together, dad would bring up the jars for canning from the basement and load them in the dishwasher (or wash by hand in the good old days) For freezing they used plastic bags with waxed paper boxes meant for making uniform blocks. Later they switched to plastic freezer containers then finally to zip lock bags. That was some of the progression of home food preservation after WWII to now.
@@RoseRedHomestead I can't help but thinking these difficult times should not be a missed opportunity to build lasting memories with our children and in my case, grandchildren. I'll never forget picking wild blackberries and raspberries or fishing with my parents or how the house would smell when my mom was making strawberry jam or cinnamon buns. Watching you, I'm confident your family has similar memories and now you are helping countless others learn valuable skills to share with their families. Thank you!
Here are two things that I see in many of your videos that I love (1) You freely acknowledge that what you preserve is what you and Jim like to eat, and that we should do the same for ourselves and families. We don't all have to like the same thing! It seems so simple but there is both kindness and practicality in that. (2) You refer us to the reputable source where we can seek information ourselves. In this case the table of blanching times on the home dehydration page of the National Center for Food Preservation website sounds like something concrete as something we can use to make sure that we are getting the best final product. Thank you!
Thank you for your insightful analogy on food dehydration! I’ve canned foods for over thirty years, but have been dehydrating foods for less than a year. And yes, most cites say foods will last “indefinitely” once dehydrated. I am an RN, so I really like your way of instruction. Simple and matter of fact. Keep bringing us these informative “webinars!” 😊
Two years ago, I started a pantry of dehydrated foods after reading a series of mainstream 'How To' books. All of these books said the shelf storage time for properly dehydrated food is 15-20 years. True; no mention was made of nutritional value (I checked), but I was certainly led down the garden path. After viewing this video and checking with the National Center for Food Preservation, I have discarded the dehydrated vegetables in my pantry. On a brighter note, I love using the assortment of dried herbs that are much better than anything I could find in stores, and garlic and onion powder are now staples in my new prepper pantry.
For the last 10 years or so, my mother has been doing what is called "Swedish death cleaning". She has gifted me and my husband all of her home-food-preservation items. Such as a steam juicer, jerky press, steam canner and dehydrator. We're the only ones of all the siblings who really are interested in it and were so grateful for these hand-me-downs.
Just wanted to say this video of yours is pure treasure! I have seen a few dehydrating videos but nothing like this. A big thank you for taking the time to do this properly. I stumbled across this by accident and I ended up watching the whole video. Unlike others, it feels like not 1 minute of my time was wasted. Thank you for putting all this knowledge in 1 video! On another note I'd like to commend you for not just listening to people, but doing your own research before sharing information, as well as standing by what you say. I truly wish more people did the same. A BIG thanks for being so detailed :)
I absolutely love how you clearly explain everything in detail. You are one of three people I watch and learn from for our food prep. Thank you for all that you do.
I love the way you translate scientific information into something so easy to understand. It's such a talent! I just bought my first dehydrator and will be sure to blanch everything first. Thanks so much for creating these videos and sharing your valuable knowledge.
You have answered so many questions that I've had about dehydrating food, I think this is the best video that I have ever seen on the subject. Thank you. Keep it up.
I am so thankful for you. It is a blessing to watch someone who cares enough about us to make sure we do things correctly and safe. I am thankful that you share the science behind things. I feel safe anytime I preserve foods that I have learned from your video’s. Thank you for paying it forward and leaving your knowledge with so many to pass that knowledge on forever. I have an entire tablet full of notes from watching you for so long.
I was so pleased with myself for knowing about the enzyme action……way back years ago from my high school home ec teachers! You do a real thorough job, here, and I am so glad you explained pros and cons of different types of preservation and made sure to keep safety first in mind. No one wants to do all that work and end up with mold or bacteria in your food. I will be watching and learning 😀
Thank you, Pam❣️ I followed your directions on dehydrated frozen veggies... IT WORKED PERFECTLY! Thank you for your beautiful videos... I feel like I’m back in Home Economics class. I love it! Thank you and your husband too for sharing and the learning lessons❣️
I watched your video A few days ago and I thought she said you could use frozen Vegetables. Good friend of mine loaned me her dehydrator, We went to town this morning and I bought some frozen vegetables. I am now dehydrating Corn, carrots ,peas, green beans, & celery... I just really love your videos.
Pam and Jim, Thank you for all of your videos!! I came across your videos and have not stopped watching them. They are so informative and I love that you research your subject prior to making the video. Thank you for that!! If I am unable to locate the information I am searching for I will always double check and see if you have a video on the subject. I feel more comfortable now with my canning and preservation skills with you as a research. Please keep the videos coming, they are wonderful!
I just got my first dehydrator today and looking for good information before I get started. And I just wanted to tell you how much I love this video! You did such a thorough job of explaining everything, and taking the time to do such great research. I appreciate it so much! Thank you for this video! Now I must watch the rest of your dehydrating videos!
I am loving my dehydrator. Thank you for giving me the name of this dehydrator and a couple of others. This one is perfect for me! I did the most beautiful dehydrated potatoes last week. I have used them twice in scalloped potatoes and they are wonderful.

I bought a new dehydrator. I bought some silicone fabric so I can dehydrate small vegetables. I ran my first ten pounds through last night. Frozen corn, frozen peas, and Frozen carrots. I checked on them just before I left for work this morning and I am DANCING! Super easy to do even after working a ten hour day yesterday! Two pound bags of corn and peas in the generic store brand were $1.99 a bag, $1.59 for one pound bags of carrots. Today we move on to fresh celery. It is getting to be a hard to find in my area. Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you for sharing us your years of experience. I learned a lot from your video today. My dad grew a lot of vegetables and fruit trees but we didn't know about preservation, we just ate and the rest gave away or threw away...
That is what a lot of us did before we learned about food preservation. Thank goodness for modern food science and research. I love it that we have so many options now to preserve food.
Thank you for this very educational video. I've been experimenting with my new dehydrator, but, obviously there were some steps that are essential that you covered. Stay safe and well.
I am new to dehydrating and have been watching your videos. This video on the basics is great. I have learned so much from you. I have dehydrated peas, corn, mushrooms and in the dehydrator this evening is celery and celery leaves which I saw on one of your videos. I can't wait to make celery salt that I saw you make. Your videos are awesome, and your experience and knowledge is priceless. Thank you so much and God Bless you!
You are a great teacher. Perfect timing I just purchased a dehydrator and can't wait to get started. I have been an organic gardener for 50 years. I usually just give my extra fruits and vegetables away. Now I am ready to get started to preserve what I can. Thank you for showing up🌹
So glad you answered my question about stainless steel shelves. I personally would never feel comfortable heating on plastic. I don't store anything in plastic bags unless I line them with natural parchment paper, because everything that comes out of a plastic bag taste like a plastic bag, to me at least. Good tutorial!
Something I learned, an Excalibur brand is great for, you don't want the the tray covers to be made of plastic or Teflon (think of the poison emited if these pans are left on lit burners) when dehydrating for over 12 -24+ hours. Always pick Silicone instead, even if you need to cut them to fit your machine. They do cost more, but food rarely sticks.
I just want to say THANK YOU for this channel. I love science and caring for my family. I’ve found myself with SO MANY apples and have been exploring ways to preserve them. I will be coming back over and over for information I can trust.
I have been enjoying your canning videos and thought to myself you probably do the dehydrating also! I"m going to binge watch especially the celery one..You are so knowledgable! Your going to end up being one of my very most enjoyable channels ..
I've only recently discovered your channel, but with each video I watch I am more and more grateful for what you do. I always like to know the how and why of things and you make it so easy to understand and your explanations translate well into my own reading and research. Thank you for all you do.

This was a great video. I learned quite a lot from it. I never knew why I had to blanch things before processing them (even when freezing) and now I'm smarter than I was yesterday! Thanks!
Thank you thank you ma’am, you are doing this nation in the world a great service right at this time especially. Thank you again a lot of us don’t know how to do these things we were maybe not paying attention or didn’t weren’t taught. So thank you very much.
OMG: Thank you, thank you, thank you for this information. What an unbelievable learning tool this is for us newbees to the art of drying in a food dehydrator.
Thank you so much for explaining why we should blanch most veggies. You explain it so well that I can understand the reasons why. You are a trusted resource of correct information for my food preservation.
Your vids just showed up on my feeds. Thank goodness! I was already in the process of dehydrating onions. In an effort to reserve freezer space as well as diversify methods of preservation, I'm trying to increase my currently limited knowledge of dehydration. Already learned a lot here! Thanks!
Thank you so very much for your informative videos! You have helped me free up a ton of freezer space and build up my pantry at the same time. My dehydrator has been running 24/7 since I found your channel a few weeks ago. Bless you and the knowledge you share ❤
This is a great intro video for anyone who needs to overcome insecurities of dehydrating. It should help fill you with facts to give you confidence. I will recommend it. Nice job!
Thanks for the great info! Vit c can also be obtained with 2 or 3 ingredients: cabbage and good quality sea salt for dry slaw process or add vinegar. Both are great ways to keep a natural source of vit C.
great video. YOu have answered so many questions. My mum gave me her old round dehydrator when she moved. I have used it alot and people always laugh at it because it is made by K-Tel. Anyone my ages remembers K-Tel records from the 70s. Anyways your video is so informative and i look forward to watch the rest of food drying videos.
What a great teacher. Learned a lot, especially blanching my celery, did some last night without blanching and looking kinda sad lol. Special thanks for info on air quality as I’m dehydrating onions and garlic in my garage in the DFW area (odor control); so I repositioned unit and opened garage door higher - luckily good weather in November, low humidity. Blessings!!
@@sarasorensen2650 to be honest, because the basil took forever and my machine was loud I never got around to trying it on the cherry tomatoes. Everyone in my house complained about the dehydrator noise. I am going to wait until it cools off here and try it again but with the machine in the garage 😂🤣
Thank you so much for the time and consideration you put into preparing this video. I'm glad I found it before doing my first attempted dehydration and I'm glad I watched it all way through
I just love you and your videos! You explain things so well! I can tell you really intend for us to understand and use the information. As far as I am concerned you are truly the best of the best!
You are a delight! So informative and helpful...this is a great intro video. I am still saving up money to buy a dehydrator, but hopefully won’t be long now. This is the first video I’ve seen of your channel and I look forward to more! 🙏Thank you so much.
I to do allot of preserving all kinds of foods, and like you, have been doing so for many years. I’m really enjoying your videos, we can always learn new things from others. So thank you so much for all that your teaching. I wanted to add, that when dehydrating my garden onions in the dehydrator, I have to do it out side, because the onion scent is so strong in the house, we can hardly bare it! Lol….. Now here in middle Tennessee it’s very very humid through most of the summer, so I generally wait until the cooler days of fall, for this process. I usually either vacuum seal in bags or in jars and also pulverize some for onion powder. Sometimes I freeze them as well. Don’t we just love preserving? ❤️🤗 love your vids!
Thank you for a great introduction. I was just introduced to this concept today and decided to look up the internet for more information. You are such an amazingly great teacher. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning more about dehydrating food and everything else you've got to teach....thanks again.
Hello! I have been watching your channel for some time now. You are a wonderful teacher! You always have just the right amount of information (with sources), and i literally take notes when i watch you. It's continuing education for living. Thank you!
Oh how I wish I had had this information a few years ago!! I bought some freeze dried corn and peas from Thrive. The directions said to just cover with hot water and let them set for 5 or 10 mins. I did that and they were not good at all. They were tough and chewy. I never used them again and they have sat in my cupboard for 6 years. Thank goodness they were small cans. After watching this video again you made a comment about how good the dried vegetables turn out when they are simmered in soups and stews. I took some of this old corn out and put 1/2 c corn in a pan with about 1 cup of water, brought it to a boil and then let it cook on low for about 10 minutes. The texture was wonderful. The color was restored. To chew it it felt like fresh corn. It tasted horrible because of how old it was! I am throwing it out and going to dry some fresh corn. If I had had your information 6 years ago I would have cooked it differently and I think I would have liked it. I also never thought to vacuum seal it in a jar to preserve it. My understanding was that it would last indefinitely. I am glad to know that the shelf life is much shorter. Thank you. I guess "better late than never" applied here. Thank you so much.
We are sorry about your first experience with freeze dried corn. We are also happy that you were able successfully do your corn again and that it was successful.
My food dehydrator arrived this week. I have done some beets for powder, some frozen corn and I am doing frozen carrots. Mostly experimenting. I love the dryer. I bought the Magic Mill and it works wonderful. I really like being able to set the time and the temperature. Thanks for your information and your encouragement.
Just picked up 10 shelf dehydrator on ebay (117.00)and 8 silicone liners(16.00) As well as a vacuum sealer I always used iron set to wool or comercial sealer, but just sqeezed out air and add oxy absorber. Stocked up on mylar and embossed plastic bags and oxy absorbers. My mother has been interested in this for years so I'll set her up good. Referred your videos to her as I think she'll enjoy them very much!
I dehydrate my tomato skins when I can tomatoes and made powder with them. I had cucumber and onion powders already and made a yummy chip dip using these 3 powders!!

Blanching onions makes it a less strong smell while dehydrating and shortens the time needed to dehydrate.

This was a great video. I learned quite a lot from it. I never knew why I had to blanch things before processing them (even when freezing) and now I'm smarter than I was yesterday! Thanks!
That is fantastic! I think we should all try to be smarter today than we were yesterday!
Please can you tell me , Do you blenched peppers 🌶 nobody does I have been searching 🤔 all over the internet thank you so much
You have inspired me to beginning to dehydrate foods. Thank you for a great 101 class! Thanks so much

Thank you thank you ma’am, you are doing this nation in the world a great service right at this time especially. Thank you again a lot of us don’t know how to do these things we were maybe not paying attention or didn’t weren’t taught. So thank you very much.
You are very welcome. Thank you for your kind comments--we really appreciate that.
OMG: Thank you, thank you, thank you for this information. What an unbelievable learning tool this is for us newbees to the art of drying in a food dehydrator.
I just got my excaliber today! I'm so excited to begin. Thank you for your organized, thorough videos. You are a pro!
Thank you...and great for you! If I had it to do again, I think I would choose an Excalibur!
I love my Excalibur! Like you, I wore it out, but my husband ordered a replacement part for it and we're getting many more years use out of it.
This is amazing! you remind me of my grandmother, your are an amazing teacher, very clear and interesting to hear you. Greetings from Chile.
Wow, thank you! And it is great to know where you are located!
Thank you so much for explaining why we should blanch most veggies. You explain it so well that I can understand the reasons why. You are a trusted resource of correct information for my food preservation.
You are very welcome. Thank you for your kind words.
Your vids just showed up on my feeds. Thank goodness! I was already in the process of dehydrating onions. In an effort to reserve freezer space as well as diversify methods of preservation, I'm trying to increase my currently limited knowledge of dehydration. Already learned a lot here! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comments.
Thank you so very much for your informative videos! You have helped me free up a ton of freezer space and build up my pantry at the same time. My dehydrator has been running 24/7 since I found your channel a few weeks ago. Bless you and the knowledge you share ❤
Thanks
This lady is amazing!
This is a great intro video for anyone who needs to overcome insecurities of dehydrating. It should help fill you with facts to give you confidence. I will recommend it. Nice job!
Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for the great info! Vit c can also be obtained with 2 or 3 ingredients: cabbage and good quality sea salt for dry slaw process or add vinegar. Both are great ways to keep a natural source of vit C.
Great tip! Thanks.
great video.
So glad it was helpful. And I remember that brand name!
I adore dehydrated apples! 🥰🥰🥰 I dry them with cinnamon until they're crunchy, and a whole 9-shelf Excalibur dehydrator full lasts maybe a week. 😳
Oh my gosh! That is amazing! And that touch of cinnamon sounds fabulous. I will definitely be trying that!
Try dipping your slices in lemon juice before dehydrating. Love the tart flavor this creates.
@@lovemybabygoat Yum! Great idea!
@@lovemybabygoat Also acts like pectin and prevents them from browning as it dries.
Blessings!!
Very formative video. Thank you so much. I will be watching more or just got my first dehydrator
Glad it was helpful! Jim
This is a very timely video because I just bought my first dehydrator. I bought it for all the basil I grow this year and cherry tomatoes.
Excellent! Glad the information was useful.
How did your tomatoes turn out?
@@sarasorensen2650 to be honest, because the basil took forever and my machine was loud I never got around to trying it on the cherry tomatoes. Everyone in my house complained about the dehydrator noise. I am going to wait until it cools off here and try it again but with the machine in the garage 😂🤣
Just getting a dehydrator so I REALLY appreciate this Pam!!!!
I learned so much from this video. You have a wonderful way of explaining the why's and how's that makes so much sense. Thank you.
You covered so much in this one video. Straight to the point too. :)
Thank you so much for the time and consideration you put into preparing this video. I'm glad I found it before doing my first attempted dehydration and I'm glad I watched it all way through
You are so welcome!

Presto dehydrator is less than forty dollars. Works very well for most people.
At Walmart
Thank you so much for sharing your information! And yes, I do love preserving food! It is all about food security.
Wow, your public speaking skills are amazing. and I love the content
Thank you!

Elizabeth: Thank you so much! Jim
You are a gem and a wealth of information.
Perfect explanation and wonderful speaking. I loved every minute I watched.
Wow, thank you! Thanks for watching.
Sounds great! So glad you are enjoying it.
Thank you for being complete in your explanations and definitions. Great video.
Glad it was helpful!
This is a fantastic presentation. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge! I can't wait to dig into more research!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comments!
I broke out my old Mr. Coffee round dehydrator. Cannot wait to use! Been years. Ordered new tray liners!
I am going to survive and thrive! 😊
Considering getting into this. Wonderful presentation! I’m a 69 y/o gal that is an audio/visual learner so really appreciate you!

Best video I've seen on the topic. Thank you for such excellence.
Just picked up 10 shelf dehydrator on ebay (117.00)and 8 silicone liners(16.00) As well as a vacuum sealer
I always used iron set to wool or comercial sealer, but just sqeezed out air and add oxy absorber. Stocked up on mylar and embossed plastic bags and oxy absorbers. My mother has been interested in this for years so I'll set her up good. Referred your videos to her as I think she'll enjoy them very much!
Wow--you are all set.

Excellent. I especially appreciate how you covered longevity. Not many "how to videos" even mention it.
Glad it was helpful!
I dehydrate my tomato skins when I can tomatoes and made powder with them. I had cucumber and onion powders already and made a yummy chip dip using these 3 powders!!
I haven't thought about dehydration, this was interesting.
I am waiting for it to be less humid in the Houston area so I can try my new dehydrator. Thank you for all the great information!
I lived in Houston so I know exactly what you mean.

Thank you learning so much just got a dehydrator so I’m new to this. So far I’ve had a go at a lot of herbs out of the garden and onions. Thanks for making things clear to understand.
