Volcano Watch 2024: Lava Reaches Grindavík, Claims First Homes

  • After a series of small earthquakes starting around 03:00 Sunday morning, an eruption began in the Reykjanes peninsula just before 08:00 just north of the town of Grindavík. By that point all the people residing in the town, numbering about 200 in about 80 homes, had been evacuated.
The erupting fissure was soon estimated to be 900 to 1,000 metres in length, situated just 450 metres from the nearest building in Grindavík. Lava has flowed over the main road to Grindavík and along the protective walls erected in the area. The eruption is smaller than that which began on Dec. 18 at Sundhnúkagígar.
A second fissure then began erupting around 12:30, just outside the town limits. Lava from that fissure moved rapidly toward houses in the Hópsshverfii neighbourhood. By 15:00 the lava claimed the first house, a newly built single family home on Efrahóp street.
At around 16:00, Met office geophysicist Benedikt Ófeigsson reported that land deformations and seismic activity around and inside Grindavík appeared to have settled. It remains too early to make predictions about the longevity of the eruption, however.
Dozens of sheep and several family pets are believed to be trapped in Grindavík, RÚV reported. The Animal Protection Association of Iceland is calling on search and rescue teams to remove them from the town, if possible. All animals had been evacuated from Grindavík in the days following the Nov. 10, 2023, evacuation of the town, however some residents had decided in recent weeks to bring animals back into town.

I loved watching the earlier three rift zone eruptions in Iceland. But, like the eruption in La Palma was, this one is horrible. Hey Jon~ I first saw you with your video of November 14, 2023, when you went back into Grindavik with your parents. I so appreciated they let you film to show us what was happening. I found it compelling and harrowing. Seeing your father on a dead-run and so focused was intense and difficult. Seeing you all racing against time was overwhelming. I hope your parents are well. There’s nothing I can do or say. I am in the US northeast. I woke up to Shawn Willsey’s drone flyover and saw live the fissure closest to Grindavik open up and expand in just a few minutes. I am heartbroken for all of beautiful Iceland and her people - and especially those of Grindavik. I hope and pray this ends soonest, the multitude of issues are dealt with creatively and quickly, and all is well. A lot to ask? Maybe, but I am still wanting it all. You all are in my thoughts and prayers and have been since 2021. Godspeed…. 🌅

My heart breaks for the people of Grindavik. I can’t even imagine the amount of stress and fear they’ve been living with these last months and to now have their worst fears realized by having lava flowing into their town and threatening everything they own. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the man who lost his life when he fell into a fissure a few days ago. I pray that the eruption will cease and no more homes will be lost and people can retrieve all of their belongings before any further eruptions. I pray that this fishing season will be able to continue and the fishermen be able to continue to make their living.

In 1973 the town of Heimaey on an island not far from Grindavik was faced with a similar situation an eruption on the edge of town in the middle of the night. The town fought back against the lava as it entered the harbor of the most important fishing port in Iceland. Industrial size (possibly from the navy) firefighting pumps were flown in from the US. The lava had formed a jagged front that was able to be cooled diverting the pressure of the lava away from the heat of town and the harbor. The end result was a better harbor as the shape of the mouth became somewhat “s” shaped sheltering the fishing fleet better from North Atlantic storms.
I wish the people of Grindavik and Iceland the best. Technology is better today and so far it appears the majority of the fluid basaltic lava has followed the berm. It will be difficult to deal with the part of the fissure that breached the berm and is going down the main road.
I for the sake of the town and country of Iceland as a whole we see something of a repeat of the miracle in Heimaey. If there is anything that can be done to
minimize destruction I would hope to see Icelands friends lend to its aid to the people on the ground trying to save what they can like in 1973.

It looks like that barrier is doing it's job for the time being, but what a shock to see another fissure open right behind the town! I said this a couple of weeks ago, there is no way to know where another fissure could open. When you look at geological maps, the town is riddle with fault lines. I pray they won't open up too, but it should be no surprise if that happens. In fact I saw a little spark of light off in the distance up in the right hand side of this video at time stamp 4:02 and wondered if that wasn't a new opening beginning to grow

I'm sure that a lot of people are, but it hasn't even made the news here in the UK, certainly not up to last night. Let's not exaggerate!

I just can't believe people have left their pets there again! My heart goes out to people who live in Grindavik, however they make their own decision to go back, their animals /pets got no say in the matter! I would never leave my home in a hurry without grabbing my pets. 😢

How sad, how stomach-wrenching. Seeing these beautiful homes burn. A home is part of the core of life for people. I am very sorry for their loss.

When it’s cold, put your hood up.
It stops your body heat from escaping through the top of your head.
It keeps out wind and helps to keep you significantly warmer.
