Volcano Watch 2024: Four Eruptions In Four Months

- A new eruption began on the Reykjanes peninsula March 16 at 20:23. A three km long fissure began erupting between Hagafell and Stóra Skógfell. The eruption was preceded by a brief period of seismic activity in the area.
Two lava flows originated from the fissure, one running westward to the north of the Blue Lagoon and Svartsengi Power Plant, and the other running southward toward Suðurstrandsvegur and the sea to the east of Grindavík. The lava flow overnight was around 1 km/hr. By the time of the Grapevine's visit on the afternoon of March 17, the lava had slowed to roughly 20 m/hr (apologies for saying 200 m/hr in the video).
Volcanic activity in the area continues to be fed by a magma reservoir beneath Svartsengi. Prior to this eruption, the reservoir was partially depleted by an event on March 2 that resulted in a dike intrusion, but no eruption.

Great update. I've been to Iceland four times and I feel concerned with each new eruption. Always hoping for the best outcome for people's homes and livelihoods and also the important infrastructure near the eruptions sites. Takk.

When lava meets the ocean it creates sulfer dioxide gas. We deal with that in Hawaii frequently.
My mom when returning to Iceland was like "hi, we are just landed, we are fine, volcano erupted nearby again, i'm so sleepy..."

That looks like a classic dying a'a-flow front. It takes a lot of force to move a flow that big. The main Mauna Loa flow front was between 45' and 65' as it was dying out.

How about the heat ripples in the air above the flow ? Anybody know the temperature of red hot magma? Bright orange 1100C. Red 700C.
When erupted the lava is 15- 1600 °C.
Iron is about 1100 °C when red hot.

That looks like 5 meter of lava. And that wall needs to be heightened before the next eruption occurs.
A next time the flow will find another path, 5 meters below the current one... only when all nearby low spots are filled it will go on top of the previous one

We visited Iceland in January this year, when one of the earlier eruptions was going on. The Icelandic people are amazing---just like their Icelandic horses---tough, resilient. Your ability to cope, no matter what, and be as friendly and welcoming as you are, is laudable. Love Iceland and her people. (And the hot chocolate!!) Stay safe!

Is the magma coming close to the top of the barriers? Much concern for the people of Grindavik and the entire peninsula.
It's being redirected nicely by the berms, so (at least right now) it's travelling slowly alongside the walls rather than building up to crawl over them and into Grindavík.

Just back from Iceland. Our Northern lights tour was cancelled 3 times but we got footage of the eruption from the top floor of our hotel and when we took off on our flight home.

How hot was it standing near the lava flow? I remember a comment from Valur about heat but that was nearer the eruption source.
The wind coming in off the ocean and toward the lava was so biting cold that we couldn't feel the heat of the lava flow until we were maybe 10 metres away - then it was very nice, like a bonfire.

you said 200m / hour and 2 minutes later 20 meters / hour, a bit confusing. I guess 20, as the stuff barely moved when the 3 people went for a peek.
She said 20 at first, then said 200, then said (I think) 200 again but they corrected the video later by dubbing in "20". So I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 20.
