I'd like to formally apologize to every single one of my TH-cam subscribers for losing to Arizona State Head Coach Herbie Behm in the 50 freestyle. It won't happen again (it will)
I had the privilege of racing Herbie at a masters meet in Mesa a few years ago. He smoked me in 100 IM. 😂. Side note : Roland Schoeman also destroyed me in the 50 and 100 free at the same meet. Humbling experience
This happened once for me at a swim meet. Our A and B relays were in the lane next to each other, and in the 3rd leg of a 4x100 relay, our B swimmer dived and went into my lane off the underwaters. Was so confused the whole 100, we ended up both getting dqued. We would’ve gotten second though which is annoying. It was so funny at the time.
@@staywhatyouare not 100% sure, most likely as we were on the same team they must have thought our “b” team was providing an advantage to our “a” team. It would also make it difficult to manage that the right swimmer remained in their lane throughout the race as we both had the same cap on.
i have kind of a similar story about a relay, except it was between two legs of the race swimming at the same time instead of two lanes. we were doing a 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay had been earlier that day in prelims (keep in mind this was in a 25 yard pool so there wasn’t the possible element of swimmers being on separate sides that it would have been for a 200 medley long course), and the backstroker was swimming into the wall while me, the breaststroker, was on the blocks ready to dive in. of course, as always, i started the arm part of my relay dive before the backstroke touched the wall and didn’t realize until i was already starting my takeoff that the backstroke had flipped over onto her stomach and was in the process of a FLIPTURN as i was diving in, so i ended up swimming breaststroke IN FRONT OF the backstroker for the whole lap until she finally ran into me at the wall and i got pretty mad lmao. sadly, but obviously, we got DQed, though we finished 3rd overall even with the mishap and maybe would have finished 2nd or 1st without it.
I haven't seen that before, even in age group swimming. But when my son was 9, he was swimming the short course 50 fly in the last heat. Next up was the 8 and under 25 free, which started from the other end of the pool. The 8 and unders had been led out onto the bulkhead to await their race. And of course, when my son's heat started the inexperienced kid at the other end heard the tone and went in too. So they are swimming right at each other and the other kid has his head down with no idea of what is happening. Fortunately my son saw the kid coming and moved a bit to the right, avoiding a collision and also not getting DQ'd or even losing a ton of time. I was really proud of him for having the composure to handle that unexpected event.
Well. I thought I was click-baited yesterday watching the Armstrong video thinking “no f*cking way, wait a damn minute” bc of my poor reading comprehension but it turns out that lane switching mid race happens lol. 😂 At this point I just wish someone would interview the two athletes about what they were thinking at the time.
I’ve only ever seen this happen once, and it was with me when I was 12 in my first 200m backstroke. I was so embarrassed and the officials didn’t know what to do 😅
I’m guessing it messed up withthe timing mechanism when Number 6 touched the end? Obviously Number7 got disqualified but did Number6 get her time allocated correctly?
I already thought that this might happen to me someday. I have problems keeping it straight after the crossover turn 😭 but that this happend in a national Championship is crazy. I mean she would've won a national titel hahahah
This happened to me over the summer. It happened during my cross over turn, I never got DQd for it. I had it all on video as well, everyone but the officials saw it
Idk polish rules but in America you’re allowed to resubmerge in breastroke so she could push herself under the water and laneline or fix it at the turn. It was fixable. Swimmers do it in practice when we swim snakes
Could you make a video about Lukas Märtens amazing time in 400 meter freestyle (3:40.33) in German Championchip? Fastest time after Paul Biedermann and Ian Thorpe so far (Sun-Yang doesn't count)😄
Speaking of weird race occurrences,,,, Kyle here’s a rule question. So my son was swimming in a relay at a regional champ meet a few weeks ago….now they are 8yrs old so the silliness makes more sense here, but the lead off back stroker managed to wander off just before the start. So the other lanes started normal but my son’s lane was empty… a whole lap later our back stroker suddenly jumps in grabs block and takes off. So he’s doing back stroke other lanes are all on butterfly my son then exchanged And starts breast stroke while other teams are doing freestyle. The official then stopped the rest of our relay from finishing. Could they technically have finished? Is it illegal to start way later than everyone else ? Anyway we all had a good laugh.
@@staywhatyouare 14 year competitive swimmer here, I don't know the exact rule but a couple of years ago I was competing in a 4x50 FR relay at sprint champs (only 50m races) and me and one of my teammates had been too caught up in 50s starting from one end that we forgot that relays (and everything 100m+) start from the other end and went to the wrong end, we got in the right spot eventually but our team were super confused so they weren't ready to start so I jumped on the blocks instead and started at the right time, by the time I got to the other end my teammates were still running so there was a delay before she took off. We didn't get DQ'd even despite not swimming in our entered order, I guess they weren't worried because they saw the chaos and we weren't in medal contention. There was also a time at school swimming where I wasn't paying attention and my 50 fly race started before I was ready so I ran and dove in and almost beat all the girls, who were wearing fins, (a weird thing my school did to encourage the girls to enter fly) and I wasn't, no officials at that though so no DQs. I have seen swimmers barred from competing if they show up late so maybe that's the logic behind it.
Also in America you’re allowed to be in other peoples lanes as long as you don’t interfere so you could technically swim the whole race in another lane not touch the other swimmer and hit the touchpad in your start lane
I haven't had exactly this, but I had a similar situation with a turn like the 150m turn. 100 fly long course, double ended meet. Heat in front of me goes from north end, swims down, and turns. I start at the south end. As that heat reaches about 20m from south wall, starter sends my heat out. I, who was 12 and had a fake time, managed to be on the guy's feet at north flags and skirt past him and hit the wall before him. My coach bought us pizza afterwards. Weirdest but best swim memory.
Isnt the rule that youre allowed to switch lanes as long as you dont interfere with another swimmer, and you start and end each length in you assigned lane? So theoretically, if she had gone back into her lan before the 150, she wouldve been legal?
@@Sockwell debatable whether or not the water being forced back actually impacted her as they were far enough away and this was breaststroke, not freestyle
