  • Here is how to remove and replace the side mirror on a Chevrolet truck from 1988 to 1998. The side rear view mirror is held on by three nuts and there is an electric cord to power the motor. Removing the bottom two nuts is tricky because of the angle, but you can get to them with a flat wrench. Watch this video to learn how to remove and replace side mirrors on an old Chevrolet truck.

    One thing I wish I would've realized before replacing the mirrors is, if you want to SAVE the stock metal mirror mounting bracket. Just remove the 3 screws from the bottom of the mirror & bracket. Pop the cover off the inside of the door, pop the connector loose, install the new mirror on the old bracket and re-assemble everything. No frustrating minutes messing with the 3 nuts inside the door, and no risk of losing one in the inside the door. Wish I would've realized this yesterday...

    I appreciate you confirming for me that the two bottom nuts are a true SOB to remove. I will wait for a little nicer day to beat up my knuckles some more.

      Be careful not to drop them down the door.

    Tip for people trying to connect the powered mirror that doesn’t have a lot of room. It’s a separate wire in the harness that goes into the door. Remove the rubber tube that protects the harness from the truck to the door, and pull some extra cable out. I had enough extra cable in the dash to get the connector all the way to the top of the door.

    Absolutely dead on video, great explanation, for a 1998 Chevy Silverado.the two nuts are a job in their own to get on and off I managed to go through 5 nuts before I got one on without dropping it in the door.. I took a half inch drill drilled whole did the door panel in front of the bolt so I could put a socket on the front nut . I also bought a half inch rubber gammets to go in the holes. don't like drilling holes in my truck but it's not noticeable and made life a lot easier replacing the mirror .

    Quick question, my 98 has power mirrors and I’ll be replacing the passenger tomorrow but they don’t move when I press the buttons, I know they are powered mirrors because I broke one and I saw the mottor.
    Is there a fuse somewhere that does not say mirrors but IS for the mirrors?

  • @michaelmark1900

    I suggest stuffing a rag underneath the bolts and using an extending magnet to grab the nuts to prevent the headache of fishing them out

      Actually use the extending magnet to set the new nuts in place. Put the nuts on the side of the magnet, 90*, then push over the bolt, slowly spin while keeping light pressure with the magnet. After a few turns, pull the magnet and nut should be started.

    Thanks so much. I actually really appreciate you being honest and saying it’s not easy cause in theory it should be right? Three bolts and a clip for the power. But dang I popped off the panel and thought how and I’m going to get to this. I’m gonna buy a flex extension and see if that’ll work.

    How did you get the wires and wiring harnesses up? The passenger side on my suburban is in deeper and tight to pull on

    • @WooferCooker
      @WooferCooker 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah same here. I’m closing to giving up on powered mirrors at this point.

    • @MrOiram46
      @MrOiram46 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WooferCooker I eventually just went for the rubber hose between the door hinges where the wires connect from the body to the door;
      I pulled the wires towards the door from there and it took a while, but I eventually had enough slack to easily pull the connector out to connect to the new mirror. I tied a long zip tie around it first as soon as I got the connector and put everything back into place after getting the mirror done. I left the long zip tie around the connector so the next time I have to fish for it, it’s an easy reach.
      Edit: If you haven’t disconnected the the connector from the mirror you are replacing yet, I suggest keeping them connected and zip tie the connector as soon as you have enough slack to secure it.

      @Tanner Did you find a solution for your wire harness issue? I have the same issue… the wire connector is much deeper in the door. I can’t seem to pull it up to reach the connector without removing the interior door panel. This project is looking much more difficult than these videos would indicate. I may need to solder wires.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can buy a kit with new glass that glues on. On some of them, you have to figure out a way to cut it to the right size, so you need to correct saw to do that. Not sure if you can buy one that’s the exact right shape or not.

      Itd be cheaper and easier to buy a complete new one. Only $30

  • @skytechenterprise9906

    Bought passenger mirror from Rockauto, their cheapest one and it’s on par with the quality of the OEM mirror, $21 plus shipping... RockAuto.com is by far the best priced and with quality parts as well. Certain parts I wouldn’t go too cheap but with non major components you’ll be fine with their cheapest or mid tier parts if AC Delco or OEM is not needed. They do sell AC Delco parts and other oem branded parts too if that’s your cup of tea.

    So why did you have to replace the whole mirror assembly? They sell mirrors at the auto parts store for $10 and it's glued on with clear silicon...

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t have to. At first, I got one of those glue on mirrors, but I bought the kind that didn’t make everything look smaller, so it was hard to see what was behind me, so I decided to just replace the whole thing.
