  • This is a lovely little trail high up on the North Downs of Kent near Wrotham. It's more of a wooded trail than a byway and very nice for a motorbike indeed. I started from the Spring Lane end which was very narrow with a deep rut all the way up the climb to the top, it was criss crossed with wet slippery roots which the El Cheapo rear tyre didn't like much, but it still did pretty well considering I had it pumped up rock hard. These roots had also built up some nice steps across them so coming back down was a lot easier, except the rut was deep and narrow enough to keep pushing my feet off the rests, so I sat down with my feet in the air for most of the climb up and down. The little Herald 250 did ok considering it has no power and completely wrong gearing for this sort of riding, like it revs its nuts off in first, but cant pull in second unless you build the speed up to the point where you cant avoid stumps and rocks and stuff, but I still have to get used to it and it would be ok on a lot of the other trails I ride on. Other things about the bike I can live with, but are they really sure this is a 250, it feels more like a 125 and at speeds over 50 it really does start over revving and sounding like it wants to slow down again. Maybe I'll get used to it, but I wouldn't want to do long journeys on it, and would never take it on a dual carriageway for fear of blowing the engine up trying to keep up with the traffic.
