This contraption, while under-powered, I would prefer any time over the Honda 750cc superscooter. The Brat has style, and a carburetor, both rare commodities in our day and age.
This is a "classic" bike so manual choke is absolutely perfect, if it was automatic, it would lose a bit of charm. It may be a great machine as a second bike for someone having a cruiser :) I love it
For a lot of people they don't understand how a choke works my partner would leave the choke on and then ride till the bike cuts out. Then would take so long trying to get the bike started again (with or without choke I Don't even know) then the engine would get so cold it probably did need choke again.! I just couldn't cope with it anymore.
Some really nicely styled cycle parts, I love the look of the two side covers and rear light as well as the items you spoke about, and, the exhaust note sounds wonderful. It's such a pity it's got no power. You need a bit of power sometimes to get yourself away from somebody else's mistake on the road.... Better to be a hundred yards up the road looking back at the mess than being a part of it because you couldn't get outta the way. Like you say, have the 47 horsepower there just in case if your in that category 👍
Well said. The licensing system is a joke but I don’t think the government will ever change it, despite two wheels being the way to save fuel. Anything below 47hp and 500cc should be learner level. They’re like driving a basic car. But the government is anti motorcycling. As someone from a European background, everyone rides bikes in Europe, the uk government has a special dislike of them sadly. The 250-300cc class should be thriving.
I watch the bit, and say to myself "under-powered" only to hear literally the same word from Mr Darcy, then about the paint, "British racing green", again, just a moment after. Hey, smart fellow, Mr Darcy. What number am I thinking of now? When somehow people massively find out about this channel, it will be viral, but in a good way.
I have one and think it's a great bike. Fun to ride and I have had comments on how nice it looks.Sturdy and well built. Was riding today from work in 40mph winds. Hardly flinched compared to the Kawasaki 125 I used to have years ago.😊
Another good review, your right about the noise regs that’s the difference between sva tested and euro compliant it’s definitely nice to see another British manufacturer, and just goes to show you don’t have to spend a fortune to have fun on two wheels 🙏🇬🇧🏍🇬🇧
I wouldn't buy one but i can see the appeal it may have for new riders. It certainly looks the part. You're right about that exhaust...it looks sick. 👍👍

I agree wholeheartedly with xc2v and power wise it’s a 250 single that’s what it is and nothing more but overall I do think that it is a nicely thought out machine that fills a gap in the market and going for smaller machines to explore the B roads.

I have spoken to someone high up in herald who has assured me this was a mistake. He sent me the true specs which was 17hp. There’s only one version with the 250 and then there is also a 125cc version.
This is a 2 year old review, the new Brat 125 with water cooling gives out 14hp and the new Brat 250 has 19hp, both bikes share exactly all the same components, frame, weight, seat, style, wheels, exhaust everything, I’m really impressed with mine it gets comments all the time, the licensing rules suck in the UK, it’s ridiculously complicated and expensive. Th power output of the 125 has been cobbled to 14hp so as to comply, in Europe similar engined bikes easily achieve 16.5hp and I dare say the 250 would do 21hp, this could be done here in the UK with a remap but then of course would not be legal and void your insurance, incidentally my previous bike was a Hanway NK but the Brat literally knocks it into a cocked hat, I always felt like I was gonna drop the NK into corners but within 5 miles of riding the Brat I was riding like a boss! Herald got the frame and suspension geometry Bob on with the Brat it really is a nice bike !
Nice review. Funnily enough my son and I just finished rebuilding an '03 Honda VTR250 into a brat. Very similar except that the twin puts out 24KW.. 12.5KW seems quite low for that Herald. But it looks and sounds nice, great second bike for running errands and fun, I'd reckon!
@@henrietn I'd call that more than a little underpowered if a mass-produced 250 from 20 years ago has same weight and double the power. (And it seems it's not about emissions laws in this case). As for being bullet proof, time will tell - let's see how many are running in 2042. 😀
Great review. This bike seems comparible to the Bullit Hero 250, similar looks. The bullit is £700 more but comes in at 26bhp. I think the bullit engine has kiska origins so cf moto and ktm links and its fuel injected too. I'm not sure where the Herald engine comes from maybe suzuki or Honda origins. Hopefully you will be able to review the Herald 500 brute when it lands. Keep up the great reviews!
Thats a nice looking classic retro looking scrambler, I don’t think we get those here in the states. Torque numbers are more important on a small displacement trail/street bike like that, sounds like it has some grunt but hard to tell.

Herald Brat...that's a new one on me!...not available here in the states. (Yet?)...good looking with that trellis frame & the tank reminds me of a RE HIMALAYAN. Sounds like my Suzuki DR250, about on par power wise too. Good review, thx👍
It looks good, it sounds good and it's got green lane potential. I'd love one as a second bike but can't ignore that the same money would get me a good used CRF250 which would still be worth what I paid for it in a year or two's time.
The Mastiff is my fun little second bike but now I’d like something with a bit more poke like a Mash XRide or a caballero, I think it’s bite the bullet time. You’re bang on with the review by the way, Cheers.
I'm a bit confused, I thought they all had to go to fuel injection because of euro 4 and 5 emissions law, how the hell did they get a carb with choke past the emissions rule 🤷🏻♂️
