      It's really funny he's covering this right now..
      Been watching evil dead every year since 2003 in 9th grade haha..
      And just 3 days ago my GF watched it for the first time
      Honestly I don't think it's that big of a deal haha, it's charming to be there, part of the bare bones low budget genius of evil dead
      But I don't mind, I mean noone would ever notice that edit
      It's not like he's Lucasing it and adding all kinds of bullshit and removing scenes and changing context
      2 is still the best hahaha
      But yeah, Adams right, they pulled this movie together with spit and tape and it's genius, amazing shots, clever editing, even if all the deadites change actors like 3 times haha it's got a charm
      I'm pissed if they dicked with the classic moon matte haha
      It's definitely inspiring, I got into making low budget horror movies because of it too, fuck modern low budget shit like paranormal activity, this is a genuine classic

      @@123612100 I don't know about other cases as this is the first time I have ever seen this dude, but for this? He is NOT! too nitpicky! You don't just go back and alter classic films like these people did, especially in cases like this where a big part of the appeal is that is was a cheaply made film made by youngsters that took ages to film and it turned out good enough to become famous and now a classic.
      I mean.. You wouldn't go back to the 1931 Dracula and digitally edit the floppy bats to be fully CG would you? Fuck no! That's just stupid! Films are products of their time and products of their creators at the time, films come out and then they're loved by loads of people for their pro's and their flaws.
      I fucking hate that anyone changes classic films like this, this pisses me off more because the original The Evil Dead is one of my favourite films ever, I honestly didn't quite notice that these things were completely edited out when I watched my blu ray but I definitely remember thinking "huh... I didn't catch them that time 🤔 could have sworn that's where they were, oh well! Guess I just didn't look in the right place" now seeing this just pisses me off because I was never gonna see it because those companies stole them from me and gave me a cheaply edited version that's not quite the film that it has been for the last 40 years approximately.

I suppose you also think what George Lucas has done is okay because "Hey the original versions are still on VHS!" lol. The original version of The Evil Dead existing on DVDs that have been out of print for decades isn't an excuse. All four edits of Army of Darkness are available on 4K (and that's not some collector's edition box set, no the base 4K Blu-ray that you can find at Walmart comes with all four edits included within the case), but we can't get the original version of The Evil Dead without resorting to out of print DVDs? I agree the original version of Evil Dead should be available, but disagree with Adum saying the _only_ reason Evil Dead is important is the story of its production. Its directorial style really stood out at the time, and is still of interest now. There are also some great performances.

      It was also the film that launched Bruce Campbell's career. It was a no-budget passion project, and the effects were extremely good considering. A great example is the tree crashing through the window: they didn't have another window. The shot had to be right the first time. The people who loved the film enjoyed taking note of these minor flaws as proof of their love and appreciation for the product of their extraordinary dedication of a crew. It serves literally no purpose to correct these things.

I don't care either way, I only have the DVD version and I'm perfectly fine with that because a film like Evil Dead doesn't really need to be viewed in the best format possible...... it was shot in 16mm with no money, no professionals, in the middle of a forest lol. It was pretty much a student made film. What they mean by "original form" is keeping all the technical flaws inside the film(not digitally removing them) that were always there to begin with...... we're not talking about picture quality here, that's a whole different issue. Actually if we want to be technical here about original quality, the DVD would not be the closest to it at all. The original negatives or theatrical prints would be the purest way to watch Evil Dead, the VHS and LD versions would be a very close second. All those are analogue formats which Evil Dead is made from, the DVD is digital and has been digitally remastered and tinkered with to make it look better/sound better so I don't see why people wanting the warts and all version of Evil Dead on blu ray/4K would be such a stretch or hypocritical of die hard fans.

      "Because it's their movie to fix"...
      I don't like this argument, because once a movie (or any piece of art) is released to the public for their enjoyment, it's then in the public domain and, in a sense, belongs to everyone.
      This is especially true when something has gained a fan base or cult following (see also Star Wars). The fans of The Evil Dead provide a tremendous contribution towards its longevity and success. Without them, this movie would be relatively unknown and certainly no-one would be bothering to go back and tinker with it. Yet I bet you can't find me a single Evil Dead fan who actually welcomes these changes.
      Another question... Who are these changes actually for? Fans of the original cut clearly love the film with way it is, but the changes hardly upgrade the movie in such a way that a new viewer would like the 'improved version' but dislike the original.
      By all means release alternative cuts of movies - sometimes they can be an improvement - but don't try to erase the originals (that some people fell in love with) from history. That's just mean.

      Personally i didn't mind any of these except maybe the jarring transition when the evil scott wakes up. Then again, i'm not sure if it's any worse than the obvious jarring jumpcut in that moment. I'm thankful that they fixed that fucking awful moon in a bluebox effect. That one always took me out of the movie and out of the atmosphere in the original version. Why even have the moon there in the first place when it clearly sticks out and looks shitty? I can do without tapert standing there in the background randomly for fixing the moon. They should deffinatly release the original cut, but these changes are closer to the changes they made in Blade Runner: Final Cut rather than "George Lucased" edits. Many people prefer that over any other cuts too, including me.

    A few other examples of films that have been George Lucased or changed in a minor way that has not been reversed since;
    - Fantasia (1940), complete removal of racially insensitive stereotypes among other numerous edits.
    - THX 1138 (1971), comparable to Star Wars in terms of massive changes and edits.
    - Jaws (1975), removed string on the buoy in the opening scene, slightly changed window lighting in one shot setup while the crew on the Orca talk about their scars to match the rest of the scene.
    - Amadeus (1984), the theatrical version has been out of print for about 20 years, while the Director’s Cut is the only version to be released currently, even in HD.
    - Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), fixed prop flaws and replacement of stunt double faces, as well as a completely new color grading, excessive DNR and changed lighting in certain scenes.
    - Beauty and the Beast (1991), the skulls in Gaston's eyes that were added to the Special Edition still remain in the Theatrical Cut.
    - The Lion King (1994), some changed animations.
    - Titanic (1997), multiple changes to the sky in certain scenes, fixed prop flaws and other movie mistakes.
    - Gladiator (2000), the modern-clothed crew member in one of the arena crowd shots is no longer visible.

    I can understand why directors want to go back and "fix" things because while doing a movie with such a limited budget I'm sure they made unwanted compromises for certain things. But once you release something, it becomes the memory most will have. So going back and altering then preventing people from seeing their initial memory is like a weird nostalgia Mandela affect combination. I feel like this is a bigger problem with older movies because of how limited digital distribution was (and obviously for Evil Dead, not a thing) so the original copies become the only way to preserve something like this but now I feel it should be as simple as offering multiple editions on a website for download. (And yeah a digital original copy is still a thing but easier to keep a thumbdrive per say then a giant film reel)

    Funny you used the term “George Lucased.” Even George Lucas kept a large chunk of the mistakes from “A New Hope” during the release of each Special Edition. The famous Stormtrooper bumping his head on the door, for example, was made even more obvious in the 1997 release when Lucas had the sound team add a “BONK” sound effect because there was a special charm to that scene and fans loved it to the point that there’s actually lore behind it. Which goes to show no matter how many times he changes and “enhance” certain scenes, there’s always a charm to some of these flaws and to show how much shit they had to face when making the film back in ‘76.

    I think Adam is getting too upset about this imo, I mean, he's literally criticising a section of a frame that was edited to remove a genuine mistake. And he had to watch a side by side to even confirm it. It's the same thing regarding the matte painting of the moon, like, I hardly noticed it. The stuff with the blood tube is a bit over the top to remaster, but literally taking someone not meant to be in the shot out of it seems a bit much to be upset over. There's low budget amateurish charm, and then there's an actual mistake. For me, this is like complaining about removing a member of the public in a remastered version of a movie where it was overlooked, and the scene was intended to be in a barren desert or something, and saying "but they were on a low budget and this is so charming, how could they do this?" It just seems kinda stupid. Remasters are supposed to remove mistakes or make the film look a bit nicer, and iirc they are done by the original director? So removing this is probably them saying "yeah we overlooked this and he looks really out of place, let's remove it." It's also not like they recalled all versions of the original and burned them along with the original reel. Adam himself says "when i first watched it I didn't notice it" so why is it so upsetting? I do agree that the untouched original should have been released with the remaster, I'm all for that, I do love the preservation of originals, it's the reason I still own quite a few VHS tapes, but this seems, idk, pointless?

    • @darraghcorrigan2462
      @darraghcorrigan2462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree on the conservation of the original film and that it should be available on bluray and all, however adam makes himself look really stupid when he's getting obsessed over a few frames that no one even notices or cares about and acting like it's noticeably worse. Even worse that he acts like nobody cares about the actual atmosphere or filmmaking or scares of the original film and people only care about the film because of its technical flaws, which is just ridiculous

      @CryingButterfly0508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, they also entirely removed the commentary track and replaced it with a different one, Adam just nitpicks on shot composition, a lot. Dude, it’s kind of the opposite. There are countless films that were cut down for their release in Germany in order to get a lower FSK rating. This isn’t even only applicable to horror films, the first Narnia movie for instance was heavily cut down and even got lines of dialogue changed for theatres and DVD and the uncut version only saw the light of day when the Blu-ray came out. They even did the same with the third one and only released its uncut form on 3D Blu-ray exclusively.

  • @Krenny
    @Krenny 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I haven't seen it mentioned so I'll tell you a few facts about the German version of Evil Dead:
    The title 'Tanz der Teufel' literally translates to 'The dance of the devils'.
    The movie was banned a few years after its VHS release in 1984. It was not only banned from being advertised, but its sale was forbidden entirely in Germany. Even the distribution of used copies was illegal. Throughout the years a total of 3 censored versions were made for the german market, only the last of which actually was released. Until it was banned again for a few months.
    This apparently happened a few more times until 2016 when Sony pictures, the owner to the distribution rights in Germany put in a complaint and the film was finally unbanned after over 30 years of fighting. So I'm not sure if a German Original DVD without the remastered changes even exists.
    Kinda crazy. It's certainly one of the most notoriuous examples but it was not uncommon until at least the late 90s that Germany banned a lot of violent media.
    The original Quake and Doom games were banned until 2011 for example.

This happens all the time and very rarely is it reported. When Lionsgate released EVIL DEAD 2 on blu ray, they digitally erased the rod you can clearly see under Henrietta's flying eyeball. The recent 4K release of Gremlins, they digitally erased a puppet rod from one of the Gremlins arms in the kitchen scene. BUT, weirdly, they didn't go to the same trouble to digitally erase a puppeteers hand during the caroling scene. Why do one and not the other???? It would have taken a lot of time and money.....so why just do the one rod? It's baffling. I'm sure there's a ton more to various other movies that I haven't found yet.

    Evil dead isn’t suppose to be widescreen!
    In the proper pillar box version does he still show up?
    Every film George Lucas has made has been edited for the versions you can get today.
    The only way to get the unedited versions of George Lucas’ films is to buy them on laserdiscs or widescreen vhs legally. Every dvd and higher quality version is changed.
    I have that DVD version of the evil dead because it has extras that no other release has. The new blu-ray and 4K have the new version of film that still has visible tubes in it. They didn’t fix every problem which is the dumbfounding thing about it.
    George Lucas ruined his films with every special edition he made. The only special edition version that made the film better was the first special edition version of the phantom menace that he then changed for the blu-ray and 4K release.
    The matrix is also a film that was changed for any version after laserdisc and vhs. The color timing is completely different.
    If you want the original versions of films you need to buy Laserdisc, vhs & dvds. You won’t get the originals on most blu-rays and 4ks.

The other stuff with the tube and the moon always noticed and appreciated about it. I've known for a long time that these changes were made to the Blu-ray and while it sucks, I lived with it because:
    A. I personally love the film (I own it on like 6 or 7 formats) for more than its cheapness, I genuinely think it has a great gloomy and grimey atmosphere no matter the version. Although I will stick to my DVD for now, after seeing how badly they fucking removed Rob and the flipping of Linda's scream.
    And B. Sam Raimi wanted the film to be a serious in tone and scary film so him removing the cheaper aspects makes sense from the Lucas boomer "now we have the technology" perspective.

    I recently purchased the UHF 25th Anniversary Edition blu-ray direct from Shout! Factory. I read beforehand that the visual transfer is excellent, but it subtracts from the special features on the 2002 DVD, while including one new feature. It ports over nearly all of the special features, but it lacks the easter eggs (though they are advertised on the cover, apparently having been intended but cut to make a deadline). The audio commentary also lacks the visual gags where Al would stop the movie to say something or make a joke, or when he would appear in silhouette and walk in front of the picture MST3K-style. As for what they added, you get a 51:06 2014 ComicCon panel with Al, hosted by Jonah Ray. All-in-all, doesn't sound too bad, but it is eternally frustrating how these new releases can't just copy everything that was on the old DVDs. I hope it's good; it's going to be like a month wait before I actually receive the thing in the mail, at the pace they're going thanks to COVID.

    It's not quite the same situation, but one of my favorite movies of all time is the Muppets Christmas Carol. I know so much about that film--how it was made and shot. I never cease to marvel of how the opening shots of the town is a breath-taking, stunning miniture with such beautiful detail and design. Ugh. (If i was rich, I would do everything I could to buy that miniature haha.) But one thing that really, really bothers me is it is impossible to find the original cut. Even the 20th anniversary Blu-ray doesn't have the original cut. It only has the theatrical cut which cuts When is Love is Gone from the film. It is Meredith Braun's only song in the movie and is essential to centextualize the relationship between Belle and Scrooge. It acts as the lowest point in Scrooge's encounter with the Ghost of Christmas Past. Without it, the reactions of Scrooge and Rizzo the Rat lack necessary context. It's absence is obvious, and it is a lesser film for it. (But, of course, they always keep the shitty pop version of When Love is Gone in the credits...🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄).
    I don't know why I am so passionate about this particular movie haha but it means so much to me. It was the movie that made me interested in film.

    I dont mind remasters of films correcting issues, adding cg, doing whatever, so long as the release includes an unaltered original print. The Blu rays of the original star trek series did this right. Nothing wrong with creating an ideal version of a film with fixed issues, so long as the original is still there.
