  • The Makarov pistol or PM (Russian: Пистоле́т Мака́рова, tr. Pistolét Makárova) is a Soviet semi-automatic pistol. Under the project leadership of Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov, it became the Soviet Union's standard military and Militsya side arm in 1951. Learn how to appraise your Makarov and what every collector should know about this unique firearm. Learn to check key locations such as the slide, frame, and safety lever to identify serial number locations and proof marks. We will review magazine markings and how to tell whether they are factory matching. This video will show variations of the Makarov over time. We will further give pointers to tell if you have a Russian or Bulgarian magazine. Finally, we will disassemble a Makarov to look at key locations every serious collector should know.

You have a real treasure. Original Soviet Makarovs with matching magazines, all in pristine condition! It's priceless! Also, some clarification regarding magazines. The one which was on the right side (without hump) can also be Soviet made one. Those were manufactured since ~1979 or so. The Bulgarian and Soviet ones without hump can be distinguised only when you have one next to another. Very minor differences, basically finish of the metal and feel. But once you've touched both of those variants, you will know even in the middle of the night :)

Excellent video, Mr.Antaris. The PM is truly an iconic pistol, and Historic Investments is the only place that has consistently carried the Soviets over the last several years. My name is Michael. You may remember me. I'm a collector who recently purchased a 62' low #80 serial Soviet from you. We had some interesting conversations about the date codes and such. Anyways, I love the pistol and have been referring people your way. Most recently my friend Trevor who ended up picking up a gorgeous 76'. It was his first Mak, and he absolutely loves it. Looking forward to more videos and hopefully doing more business in the future.

Mind if I ask what you paid for them? Atlantic Firearms has a new shipment of very nice Bulgarian Makarovs in stock for $499. To me, it seems a little steep for a surplus pistol. Not long ago they had Beretta 92S going for about $350-ish, which seems like a better deal IMO.

I acquired a Russian one recently and I’d love some more info but there’s hardly any markings on the gun. It’s a civilian export model in 380 (allegedly, there’s no caliber stamped on the gun) with the adjustable sights. Fantastic condition though with a Russian military style holster/cleaning rod.

Here in Lithuania, my firearms instructor was a retired Soviet army Major who collected Makarovs and according to him the best quality ones are from pre-Perestroika era (1975 and older) because due to economic hardships quality was dropping. Not to mention how much worse post-soviet IJ70 are. I had 1972 one for a while because those at the time were ~120$
