- I really enjoyed this first time music reaction to Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms - Live Wembley 1988.
I was extremely surprised to see @ericclapton strumming away in the background humbly supporting @MarkKnopfler and @direstraitsofficial that I didn't even recognise him at first.
Performances like this almost don't exist anymore. Perfected classical level compositions with a deep story, amazing electrifying band with a selfless artist and effortless performer at the front channeling something beyond this world.
Power of music on steroids!
Mark Knopfler's guitar virtuosity and his ability to convey a powerful story with his voice is one of the best that ever existed. Mark's songwriting and composition abilities are nothing short of genius.

Funny enough. it was a concert for Nelson Mandela then and I read rhythm guitarist Jack Sonni had the birth of his child, so they had to find a replacement. Eric surely wasn´t a bad choice.

Back seat? MK is on a different level than EC. EC can only solo in the pentatonic scale on simple blues and pop songs. He wouldn't be able to solo over a complex chord progression like this. That's why he's only strumming here.
@@mklives2 haha. I think my wording must have come across wrong. I meant FULL RESPECT TO Mark Knopfler, as Clapton was in the back seat as he has full acknowledgement of Marks virtuosity. Lol. It's all subjective and let's be clear Knopfler is my hero and icon, and for me the greatest musician that's had an effect on my life. At ease Soldier 🤣😉

There is a concert he did in Monserrat - where he does Money for Nothing - and it features Sting (doing the money for nothing "I want my MTV" parts), Phil Collins on drums and Eric Clapton on rhythym guitar. It's amazing.
What a performance this was ! And they have another concert where they play Same Old Blues which is so beautiful too
When they came on Mark announced a stand in rhythm guitarist as his brother had rushed home for the birth of his baby, he said that he didn't know if he'd be experienced enough to keep up (very tongue-in-cheek)

It wasn't his brother, it was Jack Sonni who had been rhythm guitarist on the Brothers in Arms album in 1985. David Knopfler left the band in 1979.
Aye. I remember watching this live on TV at the time. Mark pitched it totally deadpan, "we've lost a guitarist but found a last minute stand-in, I hope that's OK" or some such, watching on we all thought "oh, that's disappointing," then Clapton strolled out.
No one can play a solo as Mark Knopfler, every tone is the perfect one.
Mark is indeed a good friend, he helped Eric when he needed it, to quit drugs and alcohol …

Mark Knopfler has shown his true genius but remained a humble pleasant man playing with Chet Atkins, Emylou Harris, Éric Clapton and sharing his music with many others. His smile playing during all these concerts is truly inspiring and heartwarming
Do "Tunnel Of Love" from Wembley '85. You won't be sorry. One observation another reactor who is a classically trained musician made is that the song only resolves to the tonic chord a couple of times at most. Like the dying soldier, the music doesn't return "home".

Tunnel of love Wembley 85 is by far the best version ever. My favorite concert. Brothers in arms , sultans of swing, why worry, so far are, are also very good in that performance. Dire straits for ever.❤❤❤
I recall this concert, the thing was that the original rytm guitarist in Dire Straits had an emergency cancellation, so Mark Knopfler anounnce this with something like " it is hard to get a substitute with such stort notice, you have to accept what you get". And in came Eric Clapton!!

Yes Eric replaced Jack Sonni as he became a father of twins at that time 😊. I recommend Private Investigations from DIRE STRAITS Live "On The Night" 1992. It's so haunting and beautiful. Cheers 👍🎸🎸
I was in a sports a social club that night and of the Mandela concert and the whole club basically stopped to watch Dire Straits set MK a genius that Pensa sounded like it was crying world class performance by a band at the top of their game
Yes that is indeed Eric Clapton, and if you listen to his backing guitar work it’s absolutely incredible.
This is the Mandela concert from 1988. I watched it live on TV back in the day, I had no idea Clapton was going to appear (regular 2nd guitar Jack Sonni was at home with newborn twins) and I was blown away.
The concert is incredible, do watch the whole Dire Straits bit, it is out of this world. Walk Of Life, Sultans Of Swing, Romeo & Juliet, Brothers In Arms, Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight (incredible) and Solid Rock. Lots of solo work from Clapton as well.
You won’t be disappointed, I guarantee you that.

I can’t think of a song that is so raw and universally adored because of the emotion it evokes. The first few notes are immediately recognizable and only Mark is able to pull this off.

I was there with a bunch of friends. Big day. Heard Tracy Chapman that day and became a fan. In that era I got to see Eric play in Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler play in Eric's band.
Me too. We were introduced to Tracy Chapman, blown away, then there was a delay with Stevie Wonder, so we got another sample of Tracy Chapman... It was a magical day.
I also saw Mark Knopfler play in Eric Clapton's band many times, mostly at the Albert Hall.

Yes, he usually uses a foot pedal for the volume swells (although I have seen him use the volume knob too).
I noticed the pedal on one of the other performances, but it doesn't surprise me that he can do it all.
Yes it is Eric Clapton. He subbed in at short notice, because Jack Sonne, Dire Straits' regular guitar player, was at that moment with his wife at the hospital, where she was in the delivery room, and gave birth to twins. Mark talks about that in a later part of the show. Mark had a bit of' fun introducing Eric standing in for Jack,, saying because Jack's wife was just having 'a pair of lovely babies,' that he'd had to find someone to sub for Jack on guitar at short notice, and that Eric "was the best he could do for a last minute sub" - and hoped (the audience) wouldn't mind too much LOL! At that point Eric was having a hard time not to burst out laughing - he's got a great big smile on his face.
It was quite a show. Dire Straits had had an earlier show either that day or the night before at Wembley Arena. Then they had run over to Wembley Stadium (where this concert happened).
Wembley Arena is the venue you might recognize from the 1985 "Wembley Does The Walk" concert, which was recorded by the BBC for a later broadcast. Eric also does a solo in "Walk of Life" and you can really hear the difference in how he's playing it more or less "on the fly."

This was the 1st cd that i bought in1985 must have listened to it hundreds of times but when i watch the videos of mark singing this i feel the pain
My favorite guitarist, chord based melodies and dynamics are unmatched. Uses his voice as a complement to the guitar and song. Believe he uses a volume pedal instead of his on guitar control; he can make his guitar cry and sing. Just beautiful. Thank you for your educational and thoughtful review posts.
The combo of guitar and synth is amazing on this song. They blend so well together....
By far my favorite version of this song. He was fully charged up for this one. I love watching how he uses his thumb some times to keep a string from vibrating. It's just resting on the string.

It may be in the comments alredy but this concert was for Nelson Mandala and the emotion comes form the resonance between this song and the struggle against apartheid. At the end after the last solo he goes to the mic to sign but you can see the emotion overcome him. He had given everything inthatnysolo.

They also performed Sultans of Swing at this concert which includes a lovely interaction between Mark and Eric Clapton. It also has a saxophone at the breakdown which differs from the Alchemy version.

After following DS and Knopfler's career through my entire life (I'm 43), I can tell that a volume pedal is always on his pedalboard, he uses It so commonly for expression, because mr. knopfler is all expression, feeling, subtle touch, and magic...Thanks Marky for making me LOVE 6 strings ❤❤❤❤

Eric Clapton was a guest of Dire Straits, there he played rhythm guitar. This was the concert for Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday, at Wembley Stadium, in 1987

I read that that this song was performed for Nelson Mandela’s birthday concert. It was so popular in South Africa that the authorities asked who should get the royalties. He said “Amnesty International.” Then they were banned from performing in SA. Later that ban was rescinded. And I believe SA has correct their racist problem since.

When I was seven my parents let me stay up late to watch this. I also had a poster of Mark from that performance on my bedroom wall. The Pensa Suhr he uses for this show was made specifically for it and became his stock guitar for the next five or so years. The overdriven EMG active pickups was part of his sound in that era. The guitar was part of an auction of his guitars a few weeks ago and sold for over £500,000! It is as people have said Eric Clapton on guitar. My mum refused to believe that it was but my dad was telling us all. Knopfler introduced Clapton as his last minute stand in during ‘Walk of Life’ which was the first song in the set.
This version is, as my teenage daughter says iconic and probably the best version ever of the song. Probably!

Romeo and Juliet, any live performance. Song for Sonny Liston, Sailing to Philadelphia ( who else could write a beautiful, educational song about surveying the Mason-Dixon Line), Going Home…and the list is so wide and deep. He’s an incredible artist and a seemingly humble man. I heard him at the Ryman in 2019- it was fantastic.
Not being a musician myself (even though I love music), it is always enjoyable to hear a musician talk about the music of other musicians.
I love the way always fills gaps in the lyrics with some picking, no matter how small the breaks.
Knopfler is such an artist.

Perhaps your impression about the override is because this was the first time that MK used this Pensa-Shur (unless Prototipo is mistaken). This was also not an exclusive DS show, but a tribute to Mandela, with several artists, hence Clapton providing the basis. Alias MK and Clapton played together several times and the shows are easily found on TH-cam (th-cam.com/video/Gn5qewPTURw/w-d-xo.html&start_radio=1). This is a great version of Brothers in Arms, but in my opinion the most perfect is the one from the show On the Night. A hug.
Hi, pretty much right, the guitar was just finished in time by John suhr, its first outing I believe was the warm up gig they did just before the Nelson Mandela concert, but yes still basically new to Knopfler, and such a great performance
I used to think the guitar was revealed at the Mandela concert (with John Suhr saying he was worried the paint wouldn’t be dry), but Knopfler played it at the 1988 Prince’s Trust Gala which the web says was the week before Mandela.
I just subscribed because I see a guy of your obvious talent, just now discovering what my generation has been listening to since the 70's. You should now be hooked on Mark for life. AND.........he gets better like wine.

BTW once Mark had discovered Les Paul he's started using overdrive- the most famous example would obviously be Money for Nothing but also Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel, Imelda etc

8:25 mark...your brain started registering that you had just seen two different shots of Eric Clapton playing guitar and looking like Eric Clapton...too funny! In 1988 when you're Eric Clapton who do you hang with who can write songs and music, play a guitar extremely well easily and sing with feeling and soul? Mark Knopfler. And in 1988 when you're Mark Knopfler who do you hang out with who can do all of those things so well? Eric Clapton! Lol
This song is so, so full to the brim of emotion. The guitar is weeping, the lyrics are fantastic and Mark delivers them perfectly. If this doesn't touch you, I don't know what can.
The wonderful thing about his writing and playing is how the guitar replies and seems to be echoing the words Knopfler has just sung .
Dire Straits & Eric Clapton -Think I Love You Too Much (Knebworth Festival, 1990)
Mark was on Eric's 1988 Japan tour while Dire Straits was on hiatus. He also played on Bob Dylan's Slow Train and Infidels albums earlier in the decade, both very good. Another great Knopfler riff is Randy Newman's "Its Money That Matters". He has a lot of collaborations over the years in many different genres.

I love the way he expresses his emotions through his finger picking style of guitar playing. Masterful. Please check the lyrics. I remember the veteran TH-camr reacting to this song, but he suddenly stopped playing in the middle of the song and couldn't continue for a while because he realised what the song was about. It's a very emotional song, but he expresses it in a very restrained way. Thanks again for sharing.
Eric Clapton and Knopfler worked together a lot over the years in each others concerts, you should checkout claptons concert with Knopflers backup its the best .

With all due respect, either the 'On the Night' version, or the 'Night in London' version would have been a better choice for this song. And yes, it is Eric, they are good friends, and they played together a lot 🙂 check out Layla acoustic with MK putting a great solo on it, lovely vibe between these two 🙂
Eric was standing in for the brilliant Jack Sonni, who was the rhythm guitarist on the Brothers in arms album and tour. He sadly passed away last year #RIPJackSonni

The Dire Straits rhythm guitar players wife had just given birth to twins so Eric helped out. I used to have this on VHS video tape which I wore out as I watched it so much!
Faana Music, you should definitely check out I Think I Love You Too Much from Knebworth '90 where Eric performed and then remained on stage when Dire Straits came on. Mark and Eric trading solos is fantastic. Also check out the version of Money For Nothing from the Music For Montserrat concert at the Royal Albert Hall where Mark and Eric are joined by Sting with Phil Collins on the drums.
Knopfler player so well here. Clapton looked very impressed. Knopfler was very emotional and became absorbed in the music.
This and Tunnel of Love at the Australasia concert are some of his best live playing

Eric was standing in for Jack Sonni (RIP) as Jack's wife was giving birth. Dire Straits were actually on a hiatus and would not be active again until 1991 (the On Every Street album). Eric was returning the compliment as Mark was on tour with Eric that year ('88) as Eric's sideman. There's a great concert on TH-cam - Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler in Japan. Worth a watch.

The first guitar chords just gave me goosebumps...as he always does.
This is a masterpiece (like all songs from the Dire Straits), a musical and emotional journey, and the most moving song ever. Having survived a war as a child, this song speaks volumes to my soul…Mark’s astonishing storytelling (from the perspective of a dying soldier in the Falkland Islands War, adding some anti-war morals in the last verses) and musical genius send shivers to my whole being. The heyday of this song is Mark’s guitar mourning and weeping. Listening to this song (and the original video clip) should be mandatory to those who stand for wars or segregation…This was a masterclass in composition and performance by the tightest band on stage ever. Thank you for reacting to the best band ever, with top musicians, and to one of their best songs. These guys are Gods of music!
