    Major League Baseball has completely changed in just the last ten years, and some of these changes have been insane. Over the last decade we've watched MLB change a ton, from the players to the strategies and so much more. Hitters have a completely new focus at the plate, pitchers are throwing harder then ever, and teams are using players in totally new ways. In this video let's take a look at how baseball at the major league level has evolved over the last ten years.

    If you want to chalk it up to “old man shakes fist at cloud”, I get it. But that said, I think these changes are for the worst. Walks are boring, and homers are only exciting for a second. I miss the high average players. Slap hitters like Ichiro and the great Tony Gwynn. Three outcome baseball is much more boring.

      That’s part of why they enlarged the bases, limited pickoff attempts, banned the shift - to make baserunning and hits other than homers relevant so that three outcome baseball is no longer the most optimal strategy.

      Even if you take out changes the mlb made, it changes absolutely nothing. The game is constantly evolving. It's not the mlb it's the coaches and players. Change is natural and expected. All major sports organizations change and evolve over time.

    My problem is the teams that make it far and the teams that win the World Series. STILL have more than one guy that can’t hit for a decent average. Like .285+ and teams like the Yankees that rely waaaayyy too much on home runs seem to always go cold once the playoffs come. It’s almost like batting average MATTERS

  • @quintongarvin5756

    I find the hitting approach makes much more sense to me than the pitching approach. Having 13 of basically the same style pitchers. It doesn't take much thinking to realize home runs are king and that batting average requires a lot of sequencing luck. I also get the need for several guys who can come in and get strikeouts in key situations. What I don't get is not having ANY starters that pitch to weak contact/don't walk anyone. I would think you'd value some innings eaters, a starter that can go over 250 innings. Especially since finishing 1st or 6th doesn't change your world series odds much, a couple starters that have your arms fresh for the post season seems like it would be valuable.

    So I agree with this video, seems like overpowering the opponent is the general theme on both sides. I think a team can be perfect if they find a balance between old school baseball and new. Say 4-5 pure contact hitters and then big boppers spread out throughout the remaining spot. A solo homerun is exciting, but a basehit while the bases are loaded are equally exciting and sometimes enough to demoralize the other team. On the other side, I watched Ranger Suarez sport a 7-0 record with a 1.50 era and 0.72 whip topping off at 93 mph on his fastball. That dude is purely a pitcher, and having strong command is really hard for opposing batters. I’d load up on starters who can do simply pitch and stack my BP with dudes who throw 100. Idk I’m not a GM, but finding a balance here could make for a perfect team.

    I might be a bit of an old timer when it comes to stats, but I think Batting Average is a very underutilized stat.
    I think not being a "free out" or three true outcome player at the dish has it's advantages. Just being able to have the good bat to ball skills and a decent eye at the plate has plenty of opportunity to allow others to do even more damage.
    I understand the concept of having the guy who hits .220 with 38 hrs over the year.
    but what about having a guy who hits .290 with 25 hrs?
    I think players are trying to hit the ball too far nowadays to the point where it's practically unecessary.

      There’s a ton of evidence that proves that batting average is one of the worst stats to evaluate a player. Sure a higher batting average is better, but a guy like Kyle schwarber brings way more value than a guy like Luis arraez. You can find hundreds of articles online to explain why.

      Extreme examples like Schwarber are where I think we run into problems with this, I can't call a hitter with an AVG under .200 good even if your OBP is good and you hit for power cause that's such a big hole in your game, but I'm curious what people think about the more balanced examples like .300 with 20 homers vs .250 with 30 homers? (And I know that's a very specific example and doesn't say much else about the players)

    • @kenw2225
      @kenw2225 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Disagree, hitting is contagious. Schwarber brings no value. Hes garbage. No one is going 1st-3rd on a walk. A single they are though. Strike outs are the worst. Everyone just swings hard and whiffs 40% of the time smh. Cabrera was better in 2013 than any player last year. Batting avg will come back someday and gets its due again. Might take a decade or more , but its importance will be realized again eventually.

    Younger fans have no idea how exciting the game used to be. The 1986 Mets won game six by returning from a four-run deficit in the 9th inning. They didn't do it with HR'S they did it by hitting singles, stealing bases, and getting walks. I remember being glued to my seat. Now, pitchers don't last 4 innings, they can't get most of their pitches in the strike zone and hitters strike out most of the time. BTW, home runs can be boring compared to a real rally.
