- Is it just me or is wrapping zongzi more fun than a 9 to 5 job? Sure, it probably is the novelty or perhaps a new challenge. Something I cannot do but possibly can if I work hard enough to learn. Watch to see if I can conquer this feat of wrapping a zongzi good enough to sell because wrapping even just one is a difficult skill to acquire.

Next video: meet my new girlfriend the zongzi girl
Lol.
I agree 👍
You too looks good, but enjoy life to be single. Yeah!!!! It will come at the right time and place.. I am hoping that you will have a collab with Lavendaire Aileen..
The idea of quitting a stable job to take on intriguing ventures and jobs is such a great idea if you happen to believe and know what you are doing, which you certainly do. Great job! I love this series.
Ehhh... I don't know what I'm doing. Heck... this video isn't even getting that many views. =/
@@BeatTheBush need better editing. I see from the thumbnail you expected this video to do better than normal. And while the thumbnail is good video is too long. No one is gonna watch a "viral-esque video " that's more than 10 minutes
@@shadowfax325 I made this longer as intended for my core viewers because I know they will enjoy it this way. I also know making it shorter will get more views, so I ignored that.
@@BeatTheBush okay :) whatever works for you. I just dont want u to die as a youtuber
Tom Fisher well I enjoy this length of video. Also there is a learning curve to everything, I believe BTB will know what to do as he goes.
This is awesome. My wife is an expert in (1) preparing the ingredients (2) wrapping & also (3) steaming stages of these Zongzi. We consider ours S.E. Asian (Malaysian, Brunei-an & Singaporean) styles but almost similar. My mom taught me how to wrap these & I actually excelled and did/still do it faster & better. We love to put alotta goodies in it & also wrap vegetarian version. This lady can do it so fast. Just amazing. Love it.
This is like when Mr Rogers went to various factories to show us how crayons and things were made.
How cool! If only factories will invite me to show it.
A store only making Zongzi is pretty unique. Never even seen them on the menu at any restaurant in the south
Yes, many sells a bunch of other things but this one specializes in Zongzi.
I grew up in Sunnyvale, right next to Mtn View and am back frequently. I will be checking this place out very soon!
The best thing about financial freedom, is that you whatever the hell you and not worry about money.
=D As strange as it seems, this is something I personally want to learn how to do. What better to learn it from an expert with a store an all.
@@BeatTheBush Thats awesome! That's what life all about. Learning and trying new things!
Truly loving this content!! The subtitles had me rolling at work. Sound effects were a great little touch. I will be buying the kids zongzi as I am allergic to peanuts
Oh.. kids one not for sale. I think they have pork and egg yolk version.
You've got high stress tolerance, my friend. Hahah. I'm going to check this store out and write a Yelp elite review for you and mermaid. Let's make this shop sell out each day :)
It wasn't particularly stressful. It was more frustrating to wrap and rewrap one for the 5th time.
@@BeatTheBush When Mermaids ma ma was telling you that she didn't have all day to teach you, if that were me in your shoes, I'd have been stressed.
Oh, it was true though.
@@BeatTheBush I guess I can't handle the truth
This was such a great video! I love that you're not afraid to change up what you do all the time and make a variety of video. I hope that people reach out to you with other small businesses that you can visit so you can bring us more videos like this. If you don't get many people reaching out then I bet you could reach out to local companies, wikipedia has a "List of companies based in the San Francisco Bay Area" that could be a great place to start.
This is like the anime scenario we never asked for but we deserve.
Love the video! Your explanation on how to wrap the zongzi was fantastic even though you didn't do it perfectly! I am jealous as in London we can get a similar dish luo mi ji which is more of a Cantonese dim sum in most restaurants, but zongzi is normally only available in supermarkets but not 'fresh' like this. And I was just in a Chinese supermarket today in London and they are more like £4.50 (or $5.50) for something smaller and not freshly made in store (probably hand made somewhere, but distributed throughout UK. This shop is $3.25 per zongzi is crazy good value, especially with so much pork inside.
wow. two years after you posted, I finally watched this. Because I've been looking to make these myself. although my version is based off Made with Lau's video.
Ha ha... You don't need too many leaves... its just that it is harder to make it with just enough leaves.
I love Auntie, she's so patient and still able to laugh and teach you how to wrap even she's busy.. Now I am so hungry and craving for dumplings and Zongzi..
Hey beat the bush, this remind me of the time when I when I graduated from college and wasn't able to find a job for almost a year. Instead of working at a resteraunt that pays really low, I did volunteer works that interested me. I felt like Ive learned alot about how things work and alot about myself. The volunteer work led me to the job I have today that I am happy with that I've been working for 4 to 5 years now.
I like these kind of videos.
This was really enjoyable. She is great😂
Thanks! Yes she is. =D
Work for the Zongzi place for free? What's the catch?
Then the girl show up. Question answered
Lol. Zongzi only.
Well TH-cam is paying him for views, so it's all good
Oh, Mrs. Eng was having way too much fun watching you struggle 🤣🤣.
Hilarious I thought.
I love you getting out more. Love it.
You ever find out why it has to be in such a difficult shape to wrap?
Conservation of resources. Use less leaves to wrap as much as you can. To wrap anything with a leaf is a feat.
Auntie is great!!!
AnythingICanDoYouCanDoBetter - 😂 Great address!
Thank you!
Next video: Me and Zongzi girl go shopping and out to eat.
Even though this was a riot, I felt so nervous for you....I couldn't hack that learning curve....Thanks for the fun. It was entertaining! :D
Starting this I was pretty uncertain I could even make one. I was open to the idea that I will completely fail and still not make it right with a day of trying.
@@BeatTheBush Always interested in what you will come up with next! And you are looking super healthy! Way to go!
@@BeatTheBush Hm. Makes me want to get you to watch Food Wars/Shokugeki no Soma.
6:29 I felt this lady was laughing at your wrapping abilities 🤣
She sure was.
Behind the scenes! Aww man, now I'm hungry for it now. I haven't had any since last year. Thanks for taking us along. I like the trips out.
=D Well, they do not yet have online ordering and shipping just yet. You're welcome!
Zongzis are delicious! I made a batch of about 80 once. My first time making it! It came out great! The most challenging part was wrapping it up tightly. You did a great job!😉
Thank you! Yeah... first few were like mashed zongzi.
Interesting video! Mrs Eng is so feisty and no nonsense. She’s great! I wish I lived in California. I’d go there. That looks delicious!
A character I say! You can meet her at the store! =D
Love this lady! I've had a similar dish in Indonesia. They were sold as street food. I was obsessed. I'd love to work with this lady.
It was enjoyable. I especially liked the ugly zongzi call outs. Lol
Definitely gonna check it out when I’m in the area. Thanks for the video!
=D Well.. all the ones I made are likely already all sole.
This was so interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience. It looks sooo delicious. I'm getting dimsum tomorrow, maybe the restaurant will have some.
In my experience, they don't usually sell this type. They do sell the Cantonese square types.
I'll be sure to visit next time I'm in the bay area!
They are very good zongzi indeed.
Feels like going to a field trip.. 😉😆
Yes... so fun!
Looks good, going to call them for some, maybe not 20, but a few and some dumpling. Yum!
Nice video.hardworking family.😃
Very hard working. I think they have 16 hour days.
The zonzi, I made, are smaller, and we even use 3 leaves, making sure it is tight with no holes.
Might depend on the size of your leaves.
She was really having fun!!!
Eng ma ma?
HaHa, yes!
I kind of knew in 2004 I attained FIRE. I did various jobs that I took seriously. Subconsciously didn't give a hoot of all the drama around me because I was set. I continue this charade today. I officially retired last year. Since 2004 perhaps can be viewed as vacation. Some parts hung in a lot longer than I needed.
Omg those are my favorite! My boyfriend showed me these !
好得意呀!我又想試!
This is a scene straight out of Crazy Rich Francis! The elder passing down Chinese values to the young. Building things that last
I saw this being made in Guangzhou during the Dragon boat weekend and watch the workers for at least 30 mins ... making Zongzi . Chinese Zongzi were delicious.
You rock, man
Thanks!
Looks like a fun experience.
That looks like the ultimate lunch food all bundled up.
If brown rice and meat are wrapped haphazardly in a sea weed leaf and cooked in the appropriate method for the required cooking time but then leaks or becomes misshapen while cooking . . . .
I will still love eating the doggone thing!!
This says nothing because we don't know your food standards typically.
Sorry, being facetious. The Zongzi would be still be tasty.
we have zongzi in Thailand too. it s called ba-jang ^^
Wow. They must have tiny margins if the promo is buy 20, get 1 free. Buy 10 get 1 is more reasonable - a family of 5 might eat 10 at dinner. Or maybe a family of 3 for 3 meals. Depending on how hungry you are.
It's pretty cheap at $3.25 each. Each is enough for 1 adult meal.
Actually, you can put them in the freezer and they last well over a month.
I'm guessing that their business plan is to sell bulk with lower margins. They can't charge too high on the zong zi but she makes them pretty quick so as long as they get high quantity orders they'll be fine
This is one of your best videos! That Asian mom soooo funny!
Thank you!
you became such a pro by the end Frances! you can diversify your income further and work at the restaurant every now and then 🤠
Not part of this video but I went back a second day and was able to attain about 30 an hour. About half pro speed.
That food looks so yummy!
=D
This was really interesting. Thanks for sharing.
=D
Never heard of Zongzi. I may have to try one soon.
Glutinous rice and meat. It's savory or they have sweet ones.
If the world was made up of only Beatthebushes there would be 0 problems
Lol... thanks. =D
I think the best way to learn would be to record a POV video and then watch it in slow motion or even frame by frame while making one. I'm pretty sure you could get it right on the first try, albeit very slow, then it's just a matter of speed.
Possibly. Sometimes your muscles will not move a certain way until you practice it.
@@BeatTheBush True.
Fun to watch!😻
=D
Great video. Love your other videos too bro. I'll have to stop by that place one day.
great video! I enjoyed it a lot!
Thank you!
Her laughter is PRICELESS
I got reasonably taunted when taunting is due.
I was just up the street from there...I wish I had seen this 2 days ago!
Don't worry, they are still there. =D
I am back in Oakland now. Let me know if you want to help me paint a mural!
Ha she reminded me so much of my own aunties
=D
lol, be careful, her mom's gonna set you up with her, hahaha
I'm only there to make zongzi.
@@BeatTheBush Haha, I know. Those moms can be sneaky though!
Thanks for making this. I couldn't remember what this was called when my grandparents made them when I was a little kid. They passed away and I miss these!
i don’t need setting up, i’m taken thanks
Work for free! I need my lawn mowed and hedges trimmed 🤣
Interesting video. It must tighten up as the rice expands. But I think you'll have to buy the ones you made. That lady is brutally honest and too funny.
If you have one I can ride I can do it. Or if it's a lawn mowing company. I got about 20 approved by the end of the day.
That mom is literally every mom I ever met. They always ask about my Boyfriend which I response to by staying quite. lol Ehh....I don't leave my house so I don't have a bf. lol I low key want die inside when that happens out of embarrassment. Soon, she'll start asking you if your dating her daughter. For the longest time people thought I had a crush on my guy friend when clearly I love him like family. lol Its sooo akaward I can feel it through the screen.
Lol... yeah... moms do that. But ehhh, you never have to answer anything you don't want to. =D
now this is an awesome video i like this
This was fun to watch
=D
Beatthebush chabudou zongzi adventure.
Actually I ate a lot of this kind of thing in Vietnam. To be honest I didn't even know there was a Chinese version of this food, feel dumb. In Vietnam it's usually banana leaves. Also I had hard/fun times like this trying to make hundreds of little spring rolls at my girlfriend's house with her family.
What do they flavor the rice with? It looks delicious!
It is their secret family recipe so I don't know.
I lived in Mountain View! I wish this place had been open then...
Well... it's open now. =D
lol my mom made these at home when I was a kid. She could never get the shape right... they came out like rectangles
It's fun to try to learn something hard. =D
good quality vid very clear.
Thank you!
:O that looks amazing!
=D
Exit bouncer?! Lol! That's a great story to tell people for shock value !
He made a video about it on this channel before, haha. It's. Very interesting one

You fixed her flash card and now visiting her parents. :)
Lol
Just got back from eating Dim sum and now i'm hungry again after watching this!
=D
Too bad I live in southern Arizona.....I would go there for sure.
=D Maybe when they have same day delivery by mail?
@@BeatTheBush yeah. ......they look really good
yo the chick workin next to you, super cute, get her number bro pronto.
It's good to have a female in the video now and then.
@@BeatTheBush marketing lol
"they're expecting me". "oh, you're not working - as an engineer?" lol. i don't like the peanuts but the chicken ones lo mai gai i could eat all day! i feel there was a lot lost in translation whereas you could have communicated better in cantonese/mandarin? i was actually not surprised it was that youtubers mum because of the way she spoke, was thinking wow that voice sounds familiar. preparing meat on the floor is a health code violation in uk. cool video i think its awesome that you put in the time and effort to learn something new and stick with it until you got relatively good at it, would be interested to see more!
Yuuuummmm I love zongzi
=D
Isn't zongzi traditionally a festive thing? Todo with dragon boat? And there's a similar wrap which you can have anytime.
Around Juno for 2019 for dragon boat festival.
I see them year round.

With enough practice it worked out. You can make them very nice looking with practice.

I think this is intriguing but I would definitely not do these temporary gigs for free because your time is worth something.

You are now the real life Golden boy, congrats.
Anyone agree? I think the girl likes BeatTheBush, and BTB should date her.
was lowkey hoping you'd pronounce Zongzi with a canto accent instead haha
Lol... I just say it the same way everyone else was saying it.
Does anyone know if they sell these in Los Angeles? They look delicious!!!
Not from this store. You can probably get them locally in Monterey Park area.
I love zongzi....great Chinese tradition that u can only find during May each year but like Dim Sum which used to be only available in the AM is now available all day, in NY anyway. There’s a history that goes along with how we started eating zongzi, it was made to be thrown into the river to prevent the fish from eating the body of famous poet, Qu Yuan, who drowned himself when he was unable to successfully warn the Chu King of the Qin’s encroachment on their capital n as a result Pai Chi took it over n Qu threw himself into the water from great sadness....love that u are learning how to make this great tasty food...I make mine with the traditional Chinese sausage, salty egg yolk, pork belly n either peanuts or mung bean...it’s a lot of prep work but so yummy...good for u..!! 👏
Thanks! Yeah... somehow I wanted to learn and now have obtained 30 zongzi/hour speed.
Remember the box was practically empty when he started, then the box gradually fills in the background
Oh dang, Mountain View is insanely expensive...well the whole area is lol
She's doing him a favor, not the other way around, haha
I grew up with a lot of Chinese kids and no one makes zongzi anymore. I think this has to do with a demographic shift from working manual labor jobs to white collar. They are very ABC’ish. Even the foreign born ones don’t make zongzi, the ones I know at least. We call them banh Chung or banh tet. I don’t know the Khmer name lol.
Wrapping it takes some learning. I'm glad to put in the effort. All it took was 2 days to get to an intermediate level. Perhaps I can get to expert with 2 more days.
i put my emergency fund in wealthfront. transferred in two days. time to earn more interest.
Yup. Know how long it takes. Generally keeping it on high yield savings online is a reasonable. The rest in a lower interest local bank with free atms.
No Hair Nets???
That is probably a good idea.
You should pay her for slowing the whole process down!
Lol.
