Wearing a helmet during those those accidents is the sort of real-life fact that really squashes any arguments posed by the helmet non-wearing statisticians - the ones who argue that wearing a helmet puts people off cycling and that wearing a helmet doesn't save a life in an accident etc...you only need to have one fall where a helmet protects your head to stop you ever wasting your time reading another article about the pro's or cons of helmets...it amazes me that it's still even debated.

Nino was using a dropper last year for a while but said it allowed him to ride too fast and take more risks on the descents causing punctures so he went back to a standard post.

@@bilibiliism there are still many cyclists that reject helmets altogether. I find that very odd. Kids are worst for it. They think helmets are not cool. I woke up on the ground. Road rash on top of my hands, knuckles, wrist, on my chest, and on the bottom of my chin. Thankfully no broken teeth or bones. Just really sore and confused.
Was on a WalMart Mongoose mountain bike. 21 speed. Going as fast as I could down hill on a paved road and bunny hopped a speed bump. Woke up on the ground.
The front axle snapped and when I was in the air the front wheel fell out. I landed on bare forks that dug in the road and catapulted me forward and body slammed me. Lol I was about 13 or 14 years old.
    In my 30s now.
    I'll never forget that one.

It occurred to me that it is clear that Doddy has not suffered any brain damage from those two horrific crashes. (Wear those helmets, kids!) He is definitely the brains of the GMBN outfit. He probably has IQ points that he never bothers to use but just keeps as spares.
How could we pigeon hole the others?
Neil is the quiet (and probably under-appreciated) guru. He is not the most vocal but when he does speak, listen! Very few empty words come out of his mouth.
Blake is the 12 year old in all of us. That is a characteristic that will serve him well all his life. Eventually, he will be everyone's favorite grandfather.
And Martyn is... Martyn. Apparently, it IS possible to be inspiring AND goofy at the same time. I never even knew of him in the days before his wheelchair days but from what I have seen in old clips and references, he hasn't really changed. Goofy always wins out!
My question is this: Is what I am seeing close to reality or all these just how they are for the camera?

2:05 your old stinky deluxe reminds me of my old stinky I replaced the front shocks with bomber junior t's and upgraded the rear spring and drive train. I put it through hell and back a bunch one of the worst beatings it took was a 10deep stair gap into a cement basketball court throu the court and off another set of 14 large stairs to another flat landing which snapped the frame clean in half on the bottom tube (just in front of the word kona)and the top tube broke where the cable housing meets the frame the only thing that held the bike together for 20 feet after landing till i tried to turn was the weld that held the cables stays on. Got custom machined slugs to slide inside broken frame and welded broken tubes back up at a boat welding place. A few months later I snapped the rear right bottom swing arm got that fixed at the same welding shop.
Since then I've purchased a brand new kona stinky and haven't snapped it yet and it's been years.

Dude I had a crash kind of like yours last February. I was riding to work and it was 30F (just below 0C) outside. It was snowing, but only barely, however the roads all of a sudden had a slight slippery coating from the wetness of the road starting to cool down. It was the perfect storm.
I went hard around a corner, on my lightweight tires (Schwalbe Marathon Supremes), and instantly slid out. I must have fallen within a nanosecond, and the impact was entirely on my left orbital floor, just below my eye. Thankfully I was NOT wearing sunglasses, because they would have shattered into my eye.
I heard a super loud crack, saw a LOT of blood, and thought I knocked half my teeth out. The pain was bad, but the shock was worse. I'm surprised I didn't get a concussion. In fact, I'm surprised I didn't get anything other than a broken orbital and a snapped brake lever. One of the residents in the community saw it happen and took me in to clean me up. I got sewed up at Urgent Care, and two weeks later did a bikepacking trip in South Florida.
That was my worst crash by far. Feel free to read more about the crash, my bikepacking trips, and other stories here: thecyclinglifeofdave.wordpress.com

Oh man that fork breaking accident and the broken helmet, terrifying.
Two quick stories from my time racing in NORBA xc races. Years after I stopped racing, I related this story to a couple friends of mine who also used to race. I once saw a guy go over his bars mid-race and roll, only to catch a pedal on his face and rip his upper eyelid nearly off. As it turns out, eyelid guy was one of the guys I was telling the story to. He and I had been friends for years. We met several years after the race and he never told me about the injury because it never really came up. After some plastic surgery to repair his eyelid he was left with only a tiny scar so I never knew.
During that same race, on the second of two laps (for a total of 24 miles) I went over the bars in a river crossing, did a spectacular front flip, and landed head first on a rock. My helmet cracked clean in half. There was a huge crowd watching because that particular spot was notorious for accidents. I'm certain they all thought I was dead because there was nothing but silence until I sprung up remounted and continued on with my helmet fragments hanging from my head. I was somehow magically uninjured. Thank the two-wheel gods for helmets.

My worst biking injury happened in a similar sort of fashion to your fork incident in that I lost the front wheel off my bike and hit the pavement. It was the first bike I had with quick release hubs, and none of my friends had seen them before so people were fiddling with them. I didn't think to check it before I took off down the road to a friend's place. On the ride there, not even 100 meters from my house really, I started bouncing the front end up and down gently, just messing around, and the front wheel popped off, at which point the forks hit the ground and I got tossed rodeo style to the pavement hard on my left side, and then slid a ways on tar and chopped pavement. I knocked the wind out of myself, chewed up my hands pretty good, and took about a 2 inch long chip off the end of my pelvic bone, but that wasn't the worst of it honestly. I had also pulled basically every muscle in my abdomen, and my groin on the left side, badly enough that it all turned black and blue, or more accurately yellow and green a couple days later. I couldn't even get up off the ground, so my dad loaded me in the back seat of the car, and drove me to the hospital. Once there, the pain had really set in and they had to use a hardboard to get me out of the back seat. Took about 3 weeks before I could walk normally again. Thankfully my body dissolved the bone spur, so no surgery was required.

I've modernized it with all new components other than the frame. Still rides well! Although I just recently did some demos of modern bikes, and Doddy is right; modern bikes blow away the old ones in terms of geometry. It made me realize how short, steep, and squirrelly my binge is. The short handlebar thing brought back memories, they were usually paired with a long stem that gave me an aching back. Now I’m older and wiser I take plenty of no notice of mountain bike magazines.

I was on a bmx bike in 3rd grade years and years ago and I was fake speed wobbling for fun going down a short hill to my friends house. In a speed wobble I hit some leftover gravel from construction and I flew face first off the bike and slid on the ground for a couple of feet. Worst pain I’ve felt after my face stopped sliding into a curb

I just got a dropper for my bike, mainly cause I was tired of having to stop before every descent to drop the saddle, and then again before every climb to raise it back up. Now, I can actually get some flow goin.
However, would any of you guys be interested in stress testing the Schwinn Protocol 2.7 with the upgrades I gave it? I have it listed in the AM section of the mtbr forums. I will be swapping the front tire with a conty trailking, and the front hub with a deore m525 to match the rear however, so if you guys could use those too (if you do wind up stress testing), it would make for an awesome build review.

0:56 I struggle with joint misalignment, so I bang my hands and other body parts on my bike or tools, annoying, but I think I should l get some Mechanix gloves, with padding, cus hitting finger tips and knuckles is not pleasant. but smart selection of tools is also good idea, like for example not using adjustable spanner and separate cassette lock ring tool, which means avocational dropping of tools, so I went for Abbey Crombie, not had a problem since.
for my riding I got Troy Lee wrist support, but I sohuld have supports all over, but I haven''t tried that, but most important one is my wrist, so it helps, but I haven't worked n my bike with it.
I had several crashes, due to accidental turning, due to shoulder, elbow, wrist misalignment, I went off a wall once, but once I crashed into a wall and scraped up my mid forearm are, once I was climbing at walking pace at a bike path on the way from grocery shop, when I turned to left accidentally, I went down, elbow, shoulder, and head almost hit, I got a bruise on my shoulder, good I had Dh padding from Poc on & full face for my crashes.

Lost my 94 Cannondale super V900, signature model Franc Roman for a deposit on a new frame, say a paperboy a week later riding my baby. Hi, I'm just starting back into My DH I've not done it for year's last bike was the ATX DH so will be very interesting to see how the bikes of today are compared to some of the Gem's from back in the day! I used to love my mates, Kona Stinky I was thinking of grabbing one but heard what you said about them being outdated in today's world! I thought they were pretty much masted top class back then and wasn't much more to upgrade from them all! What is the go to rim today still the Mavic or what's the game now?

hey fella glad your ok and recovered i see the bike you crashed was a kona and here there very good strong frame with rear suspension...yours was a front end issue sadly but not the frame my question is this.... whats the biggest kona frame you can get with a straight top bar as im 6/2 an i wish to get a triangle 72v battery in there can someone or anyone who is still the proud owner of one please take the time to give me a triangle measurement leaving about an inch or more for suspension movement ??

my worst injury working on my bike, wasn't even working on my bike. my friend and i were switching his cranks, so he took his old ones off then threw me an allen key to remove the pedals, i stripped the bolt and gashed open most of my hand on the biggest chainring. i remove my pedals much more carefully now
