The other men in town, the injured, the old, the ill keep their distance from him. He plans to enlist on his birthday and leave, hopefully to fight in France, but that's three months away. In the meantime, he decides to go find his father - all he knows is that he went "South of Mason." What results is a tour of the broken masculinity of the home front - the mill towns old Massachusetts struggling to step into the modern age, with men burdened with shame in conflict and competition with women finding pride and migrants searching for hope. The boy meets a Black woman from Arkansas in a factory and begins a hidden romance. When the boy finds his father, the father is so desperate for companionship and hateful of his relationship that he attempts to injure his son so he can't enlist, but ends up giving him a traumatic brain injury. The rest of the movie takes place in a dream/fugue state, where the boy imagines he heads off to France, but when he steps off the ship on the beach, he sees the covered bridge, and looks behind him to see Mason, NH. He charges forward to the sound of gunfire and a blackout. Then they roll the list of the cast and crew, who it turns out are all dead.
(It is probably a New Hampshire reference regardless. Seth Meyers grew up in Bedford, New Hampshire, which is right by Mason. And their county is on the southern border of New Hampshire.)

The lady said the father shouldn't have been played by a man "cool" and leave that lady with the dog, I mean son alone. Good work guys 🤣🤣🤣
