  • Despite some wear in the material and the dysfunctional side pockets, the Fjallraven Kanken 13” Laptop Backpack could be a great contender as your next travel daypack. View Our Full Review: packhacker.com/travel-gear/fj...

    6:13 - Durability & Testing
    7:26 - Pros & Cons
    7:53 - The Verdict
When you hear the word Fjallraven, the first thing that comes to most minds is the Kanken range. If you haven’t heard of the Kanken already, we’d be pretty surprised-it has become one of the most popular daypacks in the world with fashionistas wearing it everywhere, from the streets of Toyko to coffee shops in Paris and everywhere in between. (Okay, maybe not everywhere-but close to it!)
The Kanken was originally designed as a school bag for children in Sweden as a solution to carrying heavy books on their backs and with the Swedish mantra in mind: “Straight backs are happy backs.” Fast-forward 40 years and Fjallraven has a range of over 10 different types of Kanken, various Kanken accessories, and stores around the world.
In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Fjallraven Kanken 13” Laptop Backpack, which we have been testing for over three years (yep-you heard that right!) in Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Spain, Paris, Portugal, and the USA.
Despite the relentless testing this bag has endured, the Fjallraven Kanken 13” Laptop Backpack has stood the test of time. We’ve been super impressed with the durability and versatility this little daypack has to offer. Although the material has some downfalls and the side pockets weren’t as functional as we’d like, if you’re looking for a long-term daypack that you can rely on, the Kanken could be a great contender.

I see that many persons complain about the price of a Kånken. I bought my first back in 1984 and still use it. I payed 14$ back then - so well spent money in my opinion. Today i own seven more versions of it lol.

The side pocket is great for an umbrella.
Also, the regular kanken fits a slim water bottle like a chilly 500.
Also a bottle like to VOSS small bottle (which can be refilled) would fit

@@cecehedrick1253Yes, this is exactly what it's for. In the 1970s all kids had Kånkens, and these pads came in handy when we were doing forest walks, orienteering, cross country skiing etc (back then, we still had snow). Every snowdrift is a chair when you have a seat pad.

I have three kankens now! a classic, a 13inch laptop version and the Greenland version! I love all of them!. I think the reason why they are so popular with women is because they have a smaller backprint. Being designed initally for children they ae designed for smaller backs. I have lost count of the amount of backpacks I have purchased which have essentially been designed for men and which make you look as though you are carrying a turtle shell! the Kanken size just seems to suit most women. That and it holds everything you could possibly need. It is also worth pointing out that Fjallraven also do addon straps for the classic Kanken which provide some padding on the shoulders.

I bought my Kanken 13" laptop bag after watching your review, and I have not regretted a single bit!
It has magic power on weight: I tested it with exact same stuff putting in the Kanken and a Herschel Little America backpack. The Kanken is obviously lighter weight on my shoulder - I don't know why but it just did.
Plus the shoulder pads on Little America are really thick, makes my shoulder overheated and sweaty, really uncomfortable in the summer; there is no such issue with Kanken's shoulder pads.

Those side pockets would be good for putting a stiff panel in each side to help maintain the pack's shape. Maybe that's what they were designed for.
I would like a pack that's not as deep (meaning the horizontal dimension from the wearer's back out to the rearmost surface of the pack when it's being worn). If it was only about 2/3rds of its present depth it would suit me, I don't like that it sags as much as it does when being worn.

I agree. Always looking for terrific backpacks, preferably water resistant, organized and comfortable to carry lots of dog gear as well as my own for pet therapy visits. I love the Kanken colors, but wonder why the company does not listen to the numerous requests for expandable / stretch material bottle holder pockets AND perhaps throw in at least one zipper compartment inside and out. For price, I agree with others, TOO $$$$ for the effectiveness / usefulness. There are so many out there now to choose from ...

Hey ツᴀʟғɪᴇ - we currently do not have the 17" Kanken or the 32oz Hydro Flask to verify this 100%, but it doesn't look like it will fit. As a comparison, we could not fit the Hydro Flask 18oz Wide Mouth Bottle in the Kanken 13" Laptop Backpack, but the side pocket on the 17" Kanken should be slightly bigger. Hope this helps, let us know what you decide. 😊👍

I’m going to get a 15” kanken for highschool but I can’t decide between the colors Acorn and Blue Ridge. Which color should I get? Also, are the colors accurate in real life compared to the website? Because I’ve seen a ton of different shades for the same color and would like to know what to expect when buying this expensive product.

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey Emily - from testing we've found that darker colors work better for travel, as they show up the least amount of dirt when you're on the road. We've tested two versions of Kanken in two colors and they've been accurate, but we cannot verify that is the same for every color. Hope this helps, let us know if you have any more questions. 😊👍

The classic should work. I’ve used my sisters who has a classic size kanken and it fit a 2 inch binder. You could probably fit another 2 inch binder if you put it so the spine is in the opposite direction of the first binder. You will have extra space but not a ton if you do that.

Most people who review the bag say that it's only the front pocket that can get water in it and it would need to be really wet for water to get in because I've had my kanken in the pouring rain and no water has gotten in yet (I've had this bag longer now and I can say that the front pocket can get a bit damp but not too wet also I don't know why I started talking about the front pocket because your comment is nothing to do with it... 😂)

Hey there! We've found the shoulder straps to be comfortable even when the pack is at full capacity. It is important to note though, that the padded shoulder straps are only available on the laptop version. However, on the original Kanken, attachable shoulder pads are available. Plus, just as a note, these straps are not going to add much ventilation so if you’re planning on doing outdoor activities, this pack may not give you the idea carry for that purpose. Hey, lok yi Lo - Fjallraven explains this sentence in this statement:
"Our long-term goal is to reduce our impact on the planet. But we can’t completely eradicate our emissions. So we climate compensate some of our products, such as Eco-Shell garments, our Fjällräven Classic treks and business travel. When we compensate our emissions, we support renewable energy projects that have been verified by the UN and certified according to the Gold Standard, an independent quality assessment of carbon dioxide emission reduction projects. It’s supported by more than 60 non-profit organisations, including Greenpeace International and WWF International. Our goal is to reduce our CO2 emissions by 25% by 2020 and become completely carbon neutral by 2025."

Hey NanoG6 - this colorway isn't currently available, as, over the 3 years that we've been testing this pack, we've noticed that the colors are constantly changing. But, at the moment, the most similar colors seem to be Ox Red and Deep Red-Random Blocked - hope this helps! 👍
