In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at why Fjällräven is so expensive. Specifically, I look at the sustainability and environmentally-friendly aspects of products like Kånken backpack in order to understand whether Fjällräven is worth the price. In the end, the price really comes down to the company's environmental and workplace ethics, the quality of its materials, and the upcharge a brand can incur.

To be clear, the most eco-conscious this you can do is to not buy anything. This is if you want to buy something and you want to buy new. So, what do you all think? Is Fjällräven worth the price? I think fjällraven is absolutely worth every penny... Why? Bc I still use the black kanken my grandma bought a few decades ago...
I'm basic and fell for the Kanken trends for my school bag and I love it. It fits all my supplies that I need for the day really well and is very aesthetically pleasing. Overall I've been trying to reduce my consumption but I feel like investing my money into items that will last me awhile rather than cheaper alternatives that I will have to replace every few years is better for my wallet and the planet. Anti-consumption mindsets are imperative to helping the Earth but on some level we all consume and it's important to make smarter choices when we do.
I own two classic kanken backpacks, it goes well with almost every errand and is very durable as well. 👍🏼 BTW, my other kanken was a secondhand bag from a thrift shop but is still damn sturdy
I'm 38, I inherited my moms kånken backpack that she had used for 20+ years when I was 13, and I still use it, so yes it's worth the money.
Our Changing Climate
I have had two Fjällräven sweaters for several years now, and they still look brand new. I wear them basically everyday. They were both a 100$, so it was 200$ all total for both (it’s a lot!) but I do think they are worth the price. They are the « High Coast Hoodies » if anybody was wandering. It’s really really high quality, it’s a real outdoor brand, unlike Napapijri or those fake brands

Here is a crash course in how to pronounce the Swedish letters Å, Ä and Ö: Å is like the first a in ”always”, Ä is like a in ”and”, Ö is like e in”merchant”. As you can see both Fjällräven and Kånken are completely mispronounced in this video.

Yeah so I’m from Sweden, and my mom is 46. When she was 9 yrs old fjäll räven was the like the Adidas nowadays. She had one of these backpacks. I’m 12 and I’m still using moms 37 yrs backpack of Fjäll räven.

I use my dads Fjällräven-jacket that he bought in the 70s and it is still in mint condition. Also the Kånken-backpacks we have from the 80s and 90s are in good shape still. It cost a lot but it will hold up for generations if you take care of your gear unlike that 15 dollar bag from the cheap store, that you'll have to buy every year for the kids to use in school.

@@Jenny-tm3cm it makes sense for elementary kids because they get extremely dirty. But for middle and high school, buy an expensive bag that lasts all 7 years or atleast 3 years. Also, 15 dollars which is the average price for a cheap cartoon backpack is nothing unless you are in poverty. Don’t assume that everyone lives in poverty, cuz even the lower middle class parents can still afford 15 dollars for a backpack every year

When I used crappy backpacks, the rain would ruin my books and the zippers would break and snag constantly, and at worst they would split at the stitching between the body of the backpack and the zipper. Investing in a good backpack means that I can depend on it in a lot of weather and I'll not have to replace it in two years.

the kånken bags last SO LONG! you get (at least in Sweden) a 30-year guarantee and so so many people in Sweden inherit their grandparents or parents kånken backpacks. How many other brands, cheap or expensive, have backpacks that last throughout 2-3 GENERATIONS? if you divide the price with how long it lasts it's really quite cheap. It's an investment into more sustainable quality products and although it might feel expensive when you buy it, it'll be so worth it if you need a good backpack (or other outdoor gear). However, If you're just buying it for the hype and the look I can understand why it might seem overpriced and not seem worth it!

Am I the only one who thinks 90$ for a Backpack that lasts you for a very long time is a decent price. I mean thats an investment you will have to make for years. I had cheap backpacks that ripped after a few month, but have never seen a destroyed Fjällräven.
Same goes for the jacket. A decent outdoor winter jacket is at least 200$ and thats where Fjällräven starts with its cheapest models as well. I really dont undestand why this film makes it look like its incredibly expensive. Especially regarding the high quality of the products.
I have a 16 dollar costco backpack that's lasted for years in perfect condition and IMHO has a lot more features than these stupid klanken backpacks. You dont have to pay a lot to get good quality.
I’ve had mine for 10 yrs and I like it for the water resistant fabric. For Danish spring, it rains often and it’s a great minimalist bag.
Ive had my mini kanken for 4 years already and have used it everyday as a purse.
(And im not gentle with it)

IKON&BTS&GG Supremesist the price reflects what goes into it, the fabric, extra features, work, eco-friendliness , and generally good quality, etc, will make the price go up. if you cant afford the bag, then dont get it. because there is a group of people that cant afford the bag or brand, doesnt mean its a bad price for what goes into it. i cant afford it either but would rather buy one of these for school than a new one every year which wastes a shit ton of money.

$90 for a backpack is actually really good. High quality backpacks can last a very long time so you’re getting your money’s worth and it’s not an item one needs to buy regularly

I have a samsonite backpack that got bought and used all the way back since 2008, half of the time it sat unused but thats still 7-8 years of use. the only damage on it is one of the small internal pockets have a ripped lip, but thats it

I beg to differ. I live near the Savannah College of Art and Design and those students are infamous for throwing away high end bags, clothing and gear. In fact the only reason I look as Bougie as I do is because I trash dive once all the students leave.

Rising Stars i wore mine daily for 2 years, back pack held up well. Had problems with color transfer though. If you’re going for longevity i recommend a dark color.

I suspect that they won't be as durable when outsourced to Asia to benefit the bottom line, although they'll probably hold up better than the average backpack.
Because back then it was made from real canvas in Sweden. Now it is made from a lower quality canvas weave in Asia.

My Kanken mini was around $60 but it is literally the best backpack I have ever owned. I use it everyday and I've had it for 3 years. It's the perfect size, not too big, but it literally fits everything. It fits 6 aluminum cans inside and it doesn't appear like it has that much space. I've never had to buy another day bag since I got it because it's actually perfect for all of my adventures, and it's safe and protects my things from being robbed. I cannot express how much I recommend this bag.
gingerontheroad Don’t put it in the washer or dryer! Just put it in your sink with lukewarm water and use an old toothbrush and brush off the dirty spots. If need to, use baby shampoo for the spots that are harder to come off and then just hang it to dry!

The thing is it's just a backpack, even just 70 dollars for the pretty small backpack is a lot. The 15 inch laptop size backpack is the size I need for my daily life but it's like 110 dollars which is a lot for me to spend.

Ive had my Fjellreven jacket for like 5 years now, maybe 6.. I had to no idea it was something to flex about. They are good products and abit higher pricepoint.

I mean my sister had her bag in like 20 years before she decided to get a new one (and the old one wasn’t even broken) the material is so good, and if you take care of your kånken right it will last like forever.

It's literally just a really durable fabric, that's sewn into box shape. Won't get more durable than that unless the fabric is sold by itself.

Because they are not doing that bad internationally, the problem is as far as I know only in the Scandinavian Arctic regions, one of the largest problems is the larger ordinary red fox taking over areas. Tragic anyway though.
It doesn't actually translate to arctic fox btw. It's more like the mountainous fox or the mountainside fox. It ends in "en" so it is "the" and "fjäll" means roughly means mountainside and not arctic. I'm Danish and not Swedish but the words are very similar.

Actually the word fjäll would be fell in English. The definition of which is a mountain that reaches above the alpine tree line. Though the English word is also used as a name for some places in Northern England and Isle of Man. So the "fell fox". Alternatively you could use the Norwegian definition of "fjell" in that case it would be the "mountain taller then a hill fox" for added ridiculousness.
its like the scottish wildcat is about to die from scotland wanting to build a wind farm on its last major breeding ground and way over estimating the numbers left. It's a premium product but you're also paying for the name, you definitely can't find something with the same quality for $30, also, nowadays we're used to fast fashion brands stealing designs, they don't spend too much on designers, they just grab a design they like and alter it, walk on a zara and you'll see it. Gucci has great designers and nice quality, but also you're paying for the brand name. You can probably buy some kind of long lasting bags for a fraction, sure, but most of the times the design isn't even original and if is it might not be that good, and even if it is they don't have the gucci logo.
Their shirts and other stuff is overpriced though, but the thing is that they can't have cheap products, if they lowered their price their brand name would go down and it would affect the whole company, now they have to keep all of their products with a premium price even if sometimes it's not really worth it. Anyway in my eyes although I can't really afford it, I don't see gucci as luxury products as I used to, now they're just like apple (or at least AirPods), overpriced and something that people just buy to flex on others, now I mostly see young people (like hiphop artists) with gucci and mostly on street wear.

I love my Kanken, I’ve had mine for 3 years and the straps are still looking like new. I think it’s worth pay more for quality. Unfortunately there is a very thin line between paying for quality and paying for a name. Luckily fjallraven sit just behind that line unlike some company’s (Micheal Kors, Gucci, Calvin Klein, off white). I didn’t mind paying £100 for my bag because it’s so good, I wouldn’t recommend it more
When I buy a $40 Jansport or Herschel, they rip after maybe a year of regular use? My $130 CAD Kanken has lasted years longer, protects from rain MUCH better (can't tell you how many of my notes got ruined in the rain from Jansport), and overall you get what you paid for.

They do have that "if it rips, we'll repair it for free" warranty but you still have to pay for shipping and you're left without a bag for months lol

@@CXY96 They sell a wax bar you can rub and coat your bag with, but my first time washing without the wax I noticed water doesn't leak through the fabric (or very minimal moisture movement through the fabric). The water just sits on top of the fabric like a cup and it doesn't drip throughout! To be honest this feature alone is what gave them my patronage

the problem is when you really need a backpack that lasts and you can't spend the money you end up going through a few and at the end of what would have been the life of an expensive good quality one you have spent the same on cheaper ones. It'd be lovely not to need backpacks but I can't carry all the stuff I need for uni otherwise :/ Buying one (if I could) would actually reduce the impact I have by having to buy them more often because of their poor quality. It all comes down to money and it sucks.
I've found the kanken backpacks to be great for uni, super durable and easy to pack. I bought mine off ebay secondhand though to get around how expensive they are new.

Yeah even for work, I've spent a small amt on bags and they always end up getting a broken strap or something because I usually have a lot of things I need to bring everyday. It's definitely worth it to own a strong and maybe pricey bag that doesn't break or get damaged easily from frequent use.
My jansport (it costed me around 40 dls new) has lasted me almost four years of university and travel by bus (when I go to my hometown 4 hours away). It doesn't look perfect now but it's still in good shape.

Around 2015 I saw so many university girls wearing that backpack in finland that I thought it was sold by a university because I didn't know the brand before. I bought a backpack after my old one was on its last legs, I'd had it for around 5 years and used it daily for highschool then university. My fjallraven is almost a year old and still looks brand new (it's black so blemishes don't show as easily). It's big and comfortable to wear too. I think I'll be using it for many years to come !!

I have a Kanken and I love it, my mum recommended it to me since she had one when she went to school and thought they were really good. Which is true I have had mine for more 5 years and it is still in perfect condition exept a little dirty from using it every single day - hiking, school, travelling and everything else you use a bag for.

I find even at regular price, their clothing isnt all that expensive when you consider you'd have to buy several cheap items during the lifespan of a piece of Fjallraven clothing. I thinnk you save money in the long run. I have often wondered though, if they (and other high prices lines), would drop their prices say 20%, if they wouldn't sell 60% more, and in turn make more money.

So I was just wondering, where do you find yours ? Is it on a third party website ? Or are their sales just in their real life stores? Or has it just so happened that I missed all of their sales ?
I’m not sure why I’ve never seen a sale from them.
I live in France, so maybe they only do sales in certain countries too. That’s a possibility.
@@Figue- I'm in Canada. I buy from both, the official Fjallraven Canada site and other retailers in Canada that sell online and ship. They all have sales at some point and time throughout the year. Right now, for example the Fjallraven Canada site has 50% off sale on about 80% of the clothing. I found the other retailers by searching "Fjallraven Canada" on Google..... they all showed up on the first one or two pages of search results. Hope this helps.

You can find their own products for a lot cheaper on amazon, sold directly by them.
One big detail tho: I don't think you get the lifetime warranty unless you buy directly from the website. I've bought a couple things from their website and it came with warranty papers the stuff I bought on amazon, from fjallraven, didn't have.
That's probably why they price stuff higher on their site. I'm not sure, but that's what I figured.
In any case, you can find great deal on new stuff from ebay sellers, or from fjallraven on amazon, or third party sites.
I'd still recommend also checking used stuff on ebay. it's stuff that's meant to last decades, that a lot of people will sell after one season of non outdoor usage, for 1/4th the price new. That's how I got my winter jacket. Coulda never afforded it new :)

In my opinion,it really isn’t that expensive,I mean sure 80$ is not cheap buut you should keep in mind that they have really nice quality. And also I have a $160 dollar backpack from Kipling which has lasted me more than 5 years without breaking or getting noticeably old. So yes,i would highly recommend getting a backpack from Fjaraven because they will last you probably a long time.

I have a backpack of some other brand which I still use. It was only 35$, also waterproof and lasts now for more than 8 years. So I still don't think the price for Fjällräven makes it up. I would say the quality is the same for a higher price. I'll go with the point of being ethical but other than that nope.
I own an original Fjällräven biwak tent that I bought when I was still a kid, around 40 years back.
Even back then it was a no-frills, pure function affair and by todays standards it's quite spartan but very light and sturdy.
It is still fully functional and undamaged and I still use it.
Around 12 years back I bought a bigger, more luxurious tent made by Tatonka, which is also a renown brand - I handn't used it for some time and it just fell apart this summer.
That old Fjällräven tent - that is the kind of quality I would want in modern stuff.

But for us Scandinavians its no place to get a backpack for 4 dollars, even for kids. Kids backpacks are more around $40 than $4
but quality over quantity . Also the bags are really good quality, especially since I brink home all my heavy ass textbooks everyday . The fact that it had not broke like my previous 3 bags is amazing enough

My mother-in-law gave me money for Xmas last year to buy myself something nice, and I went out and got two Fjällräven Kånken bags, the Mini and 15" laptop version and gave away my old backpack of about 10 years to a man in need of a good laptop backpack. My old backpack still looked like it was new and was perfectly good, it just didn't work for me anymore. It cost me over a $100 10 years ago and my mom was not happy that I bought it at the time, but it served me well through the years and I hope my Kånken's will do the same.

I’ve had mine for almost 2 years ago and it’s the best investment I’ve ever made. It’s comfy, fits a ton of things without looking oversized. It’s washable and i can tell it’s going to last me another few years. It’s worth the $100. I got mine on an employee discount for $50 so I’m ready to purchase my second one.

Ya I have the ocher one too. It got dirty from rubbing up against a bike wheel that has never been used. It got the sides all black (1st use btw). But other than that pretty nice backpack
I have a army greenish color and it started to fade a year after use from me using it at school. It’s overall an amazing bag, and it’s so durable but it does fade, which is the only downside.
Fjällräven designed their fabrics to be waxed. It deepens the colour, keeps dirt off and prolongs the lifespan. The products come with a very thin layer already on, but that wears off fast, you are supposed to wash it and re-wax it every once in while.

Clean it👌 the fabric is designed with wax and stuff to take a lot of dirt and still be able to wash it of after the dirt got there. If there is a stain after cleaning it gives the bag charm. I have a kånken and once a year i give it a good wash and re wax it and it's as good as a new one but lighter in colour before i wax it a tip

This is my favorite channel, every video is fantastic! I just wish the average consumer cared enough to find and watch this type of material. As an activist and environmental conservationist, I have found that our spaces tend to be echo chambers, where most of us are already well aware of the issues discussed. Don't get me wrong, I still learn a great deal from this type of content, as there is just so much going on in the world even the most experienced of us only know a fraction of what there is to know. I just find it frustrating how difficult it is to get fully uneducated lay people to go out and learn new things, things that might contradict their current vales and beliefs. Everyone wants to watch videos that reinforce their current world views, and we are no different. We just happen to be on the right side of it. Anyway, end rant, keep up the great work!!!

I can guarantee that you'll get an authentic kanken from the official website, but Amazon you still have to be careful. most of them are real, you just got to read reviews first and do research on how to tell a fake kanken. but if you want to be certain that your bag is real, I'd spend the extra 10 dollars for the bag on the official Fjällräven website.

I love my re-kanken. I use it for daily work, I've used it on hikes, I use it when I'm going out sometimes, I use it for photography trips, I use it for camps. I have used it for everything and it's worked for everything. I don't feel weighed down by the weight of the bag alone like I do with other bags because it's just so light and stripped down to the basics. I do have to be careful not to overload it but it takes a lot to feel overloaded. I feel it's totally worth the money because I paid the same amount I could pay for other less sustainable brands. It's also really durable. I've had it for 2 years already and I feel I can keep it for at least another two more, and that's considering how much I've already used it.
I don't like seeing all the wild patterns that fjallraven is coming out with for their other kanken bag though because it doesn't seem sustainable and seems like it's marketing itself more towards fast fashion consumers.
The Fjällräven prices are definitely worth it to me. I have had two of their Greenland Jackets (bought second-hand and now taken over by family), multiple winter hats and my longest standing item, an Övik Sweater that is still going very strong after 4 years, only issue being loose threads at the end of the arms, and that is with bi-daily wearing for 4 winters. The quality is worth the price if you keep the items for their lifetime. I usually buy at 10% off or higher.
(The same goes for all other brands that focus on high quality, my down vest from Patagonia is fantastic.)

i'm a swedish scout and i really value my gear, one off the things that the you forgot is that when it come's to the technical aspects of a good backpack for hijking fjälräven got you coverd with the best hajking backpack you can buy for money the Kajka backpack, it's sad how you forgot to mention the pure quality off the gear, my grandpa has had a pair off there pants activly hajking for over 20 years and they are still in great condition, the cost off a fjälräven product comes a lot from the pure amount off reashersh they do to make the best product they can both environmentally and productivse.
How often was your grandpa hijking? I have a Skogsö and after only 1,5 years it has wear with holes at some spots. I had much cheaper jakets that last longer.

10 years ago I buyed a 25 L Quechua backpack in Decathlon for 20 usd, today I'm using the same backback everyday and works just perfect (I sent the product back to Decathlon 3 years ago for some minor reparation after a minior accident, the cost was 10 usd). The quality of old product is just amazing.
I went on a 3 day city trip with just my medium Kanken and I could fit everything I needed in there. Incredibly easy travel, I just slid the backpack under my airplane seat and didn't have to pay the carry-on fee (RyanAir).
